Title: SD2SNES - Black Screen
Post by: paladinryan on December 19, 2017, 09:43 PM
The SNES plays other games (Star Fox, Super Mario World) fine, so not sure why when I ran the diagnostic I got this. :(   Maybe I didn't let the test finish?  The screen didn't flash those colors.  I also think I only saw the yellow and red LEDs, not the green--I mean at the end when the running lights went to show it was done (or when I thought it was done).

Just got the SD2SNES today.

Here are pictures of the board because I saw you usually ask for those.

Have you tried to clean the contacts?
Do you use the standard power supply?
What can you if you turn on your cartridge without the SD card?
Have you tried to setup another SD card?

I did try cleaning the contacts.

I'm using the official Nintendo power supply, 10v 850ma.

I did try another SD card--no luck. :(

When I turn on without an SD card I get a black screen  On the SD2SNES I see solid yellow light and flashing red.

Can you try it with another console?

I don't have another SNES. :-\

What do you or Ikari think about the diagnostic?

Indeed that Snes seems bad, test your SD2SNES on another unit for sure.

It plays other games fine, though!

There's definitely PSU issues with certain SNES models when using an SD2SNES. It draws on a little more power and the original 850mA PSU just isn't strong enough. I had the same problem when I used my SD2SNES on my NTSC-U SNES for the first time (my modded PAL console worked just fine). All retail originals played as normal, SD2SNES black screened. So I sourced a 9v 1000mA PSU and it's been perfect ever since.

It may not be the solution you need, your console may genuinely be failing but, it's something to keep in mind.

Thank you!  I actually decided to order a Super Famicon because I found a good deal on it and I did want a backup system.  And I know I can use a 10V, 1.2A Sega Genesis Model 1 power adaptor with it, which should provide more power than my SNES is getting from the 850mA US adaptor.  So maybe that will work for me!  We'll see!

It seems that Ikari is on vacation currently and can't answer your question.

There can be two possible problems:
1) your SD2SNES is defective
If so you should send your SD2SNES to us (or there where you have bought it) for repair or replacement.

2) your SNES is defective
If so you need another console.
That's why I asked you to try another console to avoid sending a fully functional device forth and back.

If we exclude the second case on your side then we will know 100% what's the problem.

It's unlikely but it still does make sense to try a bit more powerful power supply. Who knows maybe it will help.

If your problem will be solved could you please write back about it? Thanks!

I will write back!  I have a friend in town whose brother has an SNES.  Maybe they'll let me test the cart.  Otherwise, I'll just test it on the Super Famicon once it gets here, which should be the first week in January.

But how could it be defective if it still plays other games?

Ok. Thanks.

If you can play the standard primitive carts it doesn't mean that such a complex thing as a flash cart should work as well because of that.
The standard carts are simple devices. They are very tolerant to the problems of the console.
A lot of them don't use all the pins of the connector.
For example if one single connector of your console fails the standard cartridge won't notice any problem but SD2SNES won't work.

To make such a logical conclusion as you made you should first of all check all the cartridges that supported by SD2SNES.
And then you say: all the standard cartridges work well. And in such a case it starts to mean something.
However not too much.
It doesn't guarantee anything anyway. You should check all those cartridges as one device which is physically impossible.

A SNES console may have few states: alive, half-alive and dead.
The only what the standard cartridge can tell you is that your SNES is dead.
The standard cartridge can't distinguish alive and half-alive console.
However SD2SNES can and quite often does that (as well as EverDrives).

Okay, that makes sense! :)  Well, I'll let you know!

"Alive, half-alive, and dead" sounds like The Princess Bride.  ;D

I'm glad my MegaEverdrive tells me my Genesis console is alive! :D

What brand did you get?  The only 1000mA one I see on Ebay is by Tomee and is 3-in-1.

It seems that you need to send your device to us for repair or replacement.
Let's continue the conversation in the store.

Hi!

My tracking number said the unit arrived in Ukraine and is waiting to be picked up.  Did you get it yet?

Unfortunately not too useful.
Just one of the PCB traces was damaged.
