USB Dumper/flasher for SEGA Genesis/Megadrive carts and Reprogrammable cart (4Mbyte)
Features:
Read/Write cartridge RAM
Read cartridge ROM
Write reprogrammable carts
Windows software *
* FlashKit software were made for windows on C#, this means that tool can work in mac-os and linux also, but mono runtime required. (Not actually tested in mac-os or linux)

Will there be one for the SNES?
-
Will there be one for the SNES?
I can't say for sure, may be.
-
So with this I can dump some Homebrew ROMs on a cart?
-
What components need to be added for save ram?
Will there be an option to buy it preassembled with battery etc?
Anyways, great stuff Igor! Thanks for this!
-
Is this compatible with some other carts like the old Tototek ones ?
-

While it would be sweet if krikzz made a SNES/NES option, there is the infinitelives version currently available.

Later will be available version of cart with battery ram

No

Ohhh! My dream comes true!
I like the idea but why only for MD (yes I know that is the first one)? But imagine a custom slot with an universal PCB that work with "any" videogame platform.
So if you want a MD slot, just buy a Krikkz Slot to MD Slot adapter or K-Slot to SNES slot or any system
for example, I really want to dump N64 save data and then transfer it to Everdrive 64
-
it would be cool, to have the "with shell" option on the md-carts, so you don't need any donor carts anyway. ^^

I can only assume this is because i)Krikzz really loves his MD which is why we got the M-ED and ii)This isn't a new project but something Krikzz did some time ago (in some form). I'm sure krikzz has talked about this before.
-
This may be a stupid question, but can this be used to flash a cart to then play on a Retron 5?
-
In theory, it should function like a normal cartridge, and so should be more compatible with it than it is with an ED.
Just to be safe you should wait until people can start testing them.

Legit games might work. Doesnt the R5 check some kind of crc database to determine if it is a legit game or not? If it does though, homebrew and hacked games probably would be possible via a hacked firmware as well.
Im interested in one of these myself. Would be cool if you released your n64 dumper as well for ease of dumping newly found prototypes.

I didnt know KRIKzz had made an N64 dumper, are any pics available? I hope it gets released.
It would be especially useful if it could backup all N64 cartridge save types, since that still doesn't seem to be possible (Even the Retrode cant backup N64 saves)
-
Check this thread about the dumper http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1954.msg19386#msg19386
Backing up some save types can be done through different methods, but this dumper would be so much easier. Now imagine if n64 reprogramable carts were available as well!
-
the n64 eeproms are pretty big. :>
is there any good substitute memory on the market, that is cheap enough? maybe NAND flash and a mapper chip?
-
NAND probably will work too slow in random access mode. Looks like NOR flash is the only solution, but this memoty is not cheap if requred such big size like for n64
-
hm thinking twice about that, beside the memory the cic problematic, is pretty nasty, too. ^^
and all these save types...
it doesn't sound like a good idea at all ;D
-
Hey Krikzz, love the concept if these MD flash carts. Any word on battery save models?
Thanks!

I'd like some clarification on the programmer itself; because I'll likely be buying one of them. Can it dump the ROM of regular MD carts, not just the flash cart? I'm curious because of all the prototype Genesis/Mega Drive games out there that are certainly not yet dumped. So for me, this would be a great tool for dumping various protos.

Yes, it can dump regular carts
-
You mentioned a save RAM version being available in the future - will this support the S3&K-style configuration of bankswitching between the SRAM and the second half of ROM data at $200000? If so, I'm quite excited at the prospect of being able to replace the MD Pro carts I'm currently using as "repros".
-
It will not support any kind of bank switching

I just had a production run of MegaDrive shells and will offer them soon at my shop (www.dragonbox.de and www.everdrive.de)
If you create your own games, you might want to get one of those as well :)

Got my FlashKit MD and programmable cart today :)!
https://www.dropbox.com/s/bp7yeuc9sxch754/IMG_0746.JPG?dl=0
I've been able to do a range of things like saving the sram from retail games to my computer, to dumping obscure pirates. The software is very straight forward as well. The only other features that I could think of that would be cool to have (but dont really matter :D) are...
1. preinstalled sram on programmable carts (extra fee)
2. bank switching carts (extra fee) (if possible/feasible, also would be cool if it worked with your multirom tool but once again it might be impossible due to mappers, bankswitching ??? http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1732.0)
3. custom made shells (extra fee) (Evildragon is working on that)
4. ability to dump multicarts with every game (dont know if possible with software or at all)
Other than that, this thing is pretty handy. I hope to make a game hack or 2 that are enjoyable and burn them to a cart just for the fun of it. Also good for homebrew and undumped prototypes ;).
-
It appears as though there's been a serious problem in the shipping process with my Flashkit MD programmer. I've been tracking its delivery; while it was apparently supposed to arrive today, the status suddenly stated that the item was redirected to "recipient's new address".
I have paid in the exact same way as in all my previous online purchases, and the billing information has always remained the same. I've also been at the same address for over 10 years. So I'm not sure why this happened. Besides my local post office, who is possibly holding it, who can I contact at the Retrogate store for additional help? There's a chance that it might be sent back or worse (hopefully not), mailed to someone else's place.
EDIT: Good news, problem solved! My local post office made some mistake and I'm glad I contacted them on time. I was told to go to the redirected sort facility directly and pick it up. Time to test this neat little piece.

4) I don't have any multicarts. I guess they all mostly from china and have various game switching mechanism

Such things happen. Sometimes address can be damaged during delivery and they not able to read it, but sometime it happens without any reasons, may be guy on sorting station just a drunk? who knows (: Anyways, if i receive some packages back, i resend them or refund the payment

Most of my delivery guys (all couriers) seem like idiots. I get stuff misdelivered to me all the time and even have things marked as delivered to my door that don't show up til the next day. I assume it's the guy running late so he marks something delivered to make his quota or whatever and then just delivers the next day. Every time this happens, I call and complain but clearly it doesn't help.
I imagine they just don't care. Fortunately, I've only had 2-3 things that just never showed up at all.
-
Yeah, I've had quite a few troubles with the PO at my area when it comes to packages. Not the same as this one that happened yesterday, but still equally as ridiculous or erroneous. It's irritating, but s*** happens. At least I got it successfully :)

Do you have any suggestions if someone wanted to solder on a battery holder and install the battery themselves? Im probably gonna order a few more carts soon (got 5 donor carts for less than a dollar :) ) and would like to experiment with these ;).

Just got my Flashkit today and tested my SEGA PICO adapter (made for the Retrode) with it! As expected it's working without problems and even better as with the Retrode.
The Software also recognize the rom-size and rom-name from the header.
Had two games, which only gave me bad dumps with the retrode.
The Flashkit did read them perfectly!

so this is most likely the first adapter for the FlashKit!
read the story about the adapter here: http://www.retrode.org/2012/02/sega-pico-plug-in-adapter/

It is working now, I plug the cart in the wrong way, thanks again krikzz (God of consoles), I am very happy thank you,
-
Has anyone recorded video of this device? I'd really like to see it in action. When you pop a freshly flashed PCB in, does it boot like a standard Genesis/MD cart or is there a krikzz splash screen or what?
Very interested. I have an "All Levels" Doom 32X hack and a couple homebrews I'd like to slap in a cart without tracking down more EPROMs and sac carts.
-
Eh...nightmarish thought. If there's no splash screen or indication of the flash carts being...well, flash carts, there might be a rise in pirate carts on eBay soon.

Got my Flashkit and am very happy with it! Works like a charm right off the bat on everything I've thrown at it! Now to make some carts of my hacks... ;D

No splash screen, works basically like a cart. Not sure, why anybody would pirate carts with these since your looking at $9 each. But I guess they could...

^You know those expensive as shit MD games.
$9 don't seem like all that much now
If there was one for the SNES I know a lot of scammers would be warming up there printers with Earthbound labels and as "Nintendo fans are crazy" (TM) they woundt care.
Personally I wount mind having a few and plonking some translated/hacked ROMs onto them (Pulseman, Sonic MegaMix)
With some RAS games people tend to ask for a picture of the PCB with a time stamp

What does RAS mean, please? I know that CIB means 'Complete in Box' (i.e. you get the cartridge (or disc), manual, box, and whatever else was there when the game was bought from the shop), but not RAS.

RAS = Rare as shit as apposed to POS = Pile of shit

Ah, embarrassing! I thought it might mean something like "Rare and Special", or 'Rare and Sought after" or "Rare/Automatically Sells", etc.

Rockin Afro sir......................
-
RAS = Rare as shit as apposed to POS = Pile of shit
True. But it would be suspicious if there was all of sudden just two or three of rare carts "showing" up. So your window of opportunity is not very long, since it's a small community that want these. As always "buyer beware"... 8)

In that case you can always ask for pictures of the PCB if its suspsious

Can somebody please tell me how i configure this unit and get it to work??
I have downloaded the software and am able to open the actual program but it just says 'device not connected' my computer continually says 'no drivers available'
I have searched through the folders but cannot find anything there as in the way of drivers to run this from. Im now out of ideas to try.
The unit does make the usb connection tone when plugged in but the light on the board only flashed twice and then goes out.
Please help me.

I had installed the initial driver for the MED and all krikzz usb devices now work, since they use the same drivers. If using Windows 7, check this thread out http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1911.msg18917#msg18917 (if you have something else, maybe it will still help you out).

Has this been redesigned yet, or do these PCBs still not save? I have ordered some, have not received them yet, just curious so as to not waste my time trying to get saving working. :)

I'm not sure if this is the right place for questions about this and the $9 dollar flash board.
Does the ROM have to be padded to 1024 or 2048k? I've got a ROM that's 183kb as it is.
Second, I heard the $9 dollar flash board can only be written to a single time? Is this true?
Third, is there a way to detect if the FlashKit card MD is being used? Meaning, I'd like my games to *only* run on a FlashKit card MD.
Thank you in advance for any clues!
-
You can write rom as is.
Flashkit 9usd board can be rewritten around 100 000 times
You can use CFI query to detect if your game runs from flash memory. It can prevent game emulation with emulators, but will not help if pirates will write game on same type of memory chip. However, each flashchip has unique serial number, so, you can make some kind on protection based on this number, but this is not very strong protection anyway. Details about CFI query in datasheet: http://pdf.datasheetcatalog.com/datasheets/700/398308_DS.pdf

Thank you for the very fast reply! Also, thank you for making these Flashkit boards! I make new sega genesis games but have no idea how to solder. Your boards allow me to create AND publish games. Also, the Everdrive has been very, VERY useful for testing.
My hope is someday you'll have flashkit with SRAM :)

Hi there!
Have someone tried to dump QuackShot for Mega Drive via FlashKit MD dumper/programmer? I have recently made several tries to dump this game from three Mega Drive cartridges and all the tries were successfull, but ROM file size was smaller than expected and non-working. According to "cart info" the ROM size is 256KB. :o All these cartridges work fine on real hardware console and on Retron 5 which also preliminary dump cartridge data to memory before start the game. So, Mega Drive cartridges were dumped in a smaller size and only Genesis version of QuackShot was dumped with a normal 512KB ROM (and works fine). But Genesis and Mega Drive ROMs should be identical. I have never experienced such issue with any other games while dumping the ROMs.
What do you think about this?
-
Must be some bug in rom size detection. I will check
-
If you are detecting mirrored ROM data to determine real ROM size, beware that Quackshot PAL cartridge is wired differently than normal ones: the ROM size is 512 kB but the lower 256 kB is mirrored in the lower 1MB memory range and the upper 256 kB is mirrored in the next 1MB memory range.
https://github.com/ekeeke/Genesis-Plus-GX/blob/master/core/cart_hw/md_cart.c#L353
This also explains why the PAL dump is 1,25 MB so it can be flashed on normal cartridges and correctly loaded in emulators.
-
Thank you very much! I will fork Flashkit MD software tool and try to update this logic.
-
krikzz, I found two more incompatible games, please check what's wrong with the cart's software:
1. PGA Tour Golf II (UE). Cart says the ROM size is 2 Mb, but actual size is 1 Mb. After trim operation (just delete last 1 Mb in HEX editor) the ROM became identical to GoodGen dump. I think cart incorrectly determines ROM size (second Megabyte is just blank space). Download dump (http://zalil.su/9463990), photos are here (http://datomatic.no-intro.org/index.php?page=show_record&s=32&n=0993) (upper USA dump with 4 pictures is mine).
2. Mystic Defender (UE). Cart just said it "Unknown (W)" and dump has correct size but is absolutely wrong internally. Download dump (http://zalil.su/3431156).

Will work if game does not require on-board RAM or co-processor, like virtua racing

No.

Hey everyone,
I was able to get the software working natively in MacOS 10.12.6. I also bundled it into a native .app. What's strange is that it won't launch by double clicking the .app. You have to open a terminal, navigate to the directory, and type "open flashkit-md-v1.0.0.0.app". Some graphical stuff is messed up, such as the progress bar, but it works to read and write carts. I just thought I'd post it here in case anyone else would find it useful or knew how to fix some of the weird stuff.
here's a download: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2JWZbiqagfDNzRFNU95MUFSZWM
If you're curious, I've developed a new flash cart for my Genesis compilation album-on-cart. We used the krikzz flasher to flash the carts and so far it's working great! Check out this link for more info: https://catskullelectronics.com/YM2017

Hello,
may I ask if Flashkit MD can write on "open source" MD PCBs based on EEPROMs like the one of HD Retrovision?

Thank you very much.

Hello,
Does anyone know if I can use the flash kit md to make region free sega cd bios carts? I just want a single cart solution to play different region games, can it be done as I know the everdrive allows it??
Thanks

No, it can't. There is required extra logic on cart to boot bios from cartridge port.

Thanks for the reply!
I’m going to order one later. Is it just as simple as selecting write rom, choosing my game and then it will write? Or do I need to something else? Is there a guide anywhere?
Thanks

My dumper does not work, it always writes - Device is not detected.
I tried different drivers, it didn't help.
