Title: Adding a USB port
Post by: simplejack on January 04, 2013, 12:38 PM
I have an ED64 (board version 2.01 -- 13.02.2012) and it's identical to the one pictured on the website except that it's missing the USB port on the back side and a chip from the front side.

Can I just solder a USB port on or is that missing chip required for it to work? Can you recommend a USB port model number I can look for to buy one? Many thanks for a great product :D

You need mini usb connector and FT245RL chip

What does a USB port add to the Everdrive that you can't do without one? Does it just allow you to change the contents of the SD Card without having to remove the SD Card from the Everdrive and insert it into your PC?

It not allow to change content on SD card. USB is a developers feature for "hot loading" and debug

Can you find and use cheats in game via the USB port in a 'development' Everdrive64? As in, can you read/write to the memory while the game is running to alter its values? Thanks.

usb port controlled by N64 cpu, so game should have some code for usb handling, otherwise you can't anything do  with usb during gameplay

my usb is now ready to use. ^^
i made some photos that might help you, if you want to upgrade, too.
but be warned - it's no beginners task, the ssop28 is very tiny :D
maybe you should practise on some broken devices first, i did so! ^^

you will need a gamebit or whatever to open the cart - or torx E4

the back-shilding has 2 philips-head screws

in my case i had to alter the shilding so it fits better and don't "sit on" the ed64 pcb

the location of the ft245rl. :D
my hint is to watch some yt vids first on how to solder such parts manually ^^

the hole for the usb-jack must be big enough, 'cause the port sits somehow deep inside the cart. ^^

Planning to add a USB port to my EverDrive, but I'm not sure which USB mini B connector to buy. They seem to have slightly different dimensions with regards to the pin spacing and location of the plastic mounting pieces on the bottom. Would either of these work?
