Title: Aleck64
Post by: cheaterdragon1 on January 13, 2015, 01:58 AM
For those who don't know, the Seta Aleck64 was some arcade hardware based on the Nintendo 64 system. It had just a few releases and was exclusive to Japan only.

Over on the Assembler Forums user Zoinkity has managed to get these Aleck64 Arcade ROMs running on the actual N64 console using a flashcart. Currently these 5 are working:

Donchan Puzzle Hanabi de Doon!
Kuru Kuru Fever
Star Soldier Vanishing Earth Arcade
Tower&Shaft
Vivid Dolls

The good news is this is Everdrive 64 compatible. The bad news is you have to use an old OS.

I've tested these ROMs on several different OS's:

1.28 - Working
1.29 - Working
2.04 - Not working. "Warning BAD CRC"
2.08 - Not working. "Corrupted ROM - BAD CRC"

Not that I expected it to work, but I tried using WindROM to fix the CRC and that removed those error messages, but the games didn't boot.

So somehow without even knowing it the old OS supported Aleck64 games and the newer ones do not. Can you fix this Krikzz?

The original thread on Assembler is right here: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?55041-Aleck64-on-Retail-Consoles-PoC All the patches and instructions are available there too.

If there was an option on the new OS to turn off checksum checking they would probably work.

Eleven Beat patch released!

No it's a patch that converts it to a N64 game just like the other patches in this thread. The patch is in the Assembler thread among the other patches. And yes there are some youtube videos if you search.

Assembler games' servers had a hardware failure it seems. This should be all patches unless more was added since.

Thanks, but for some reason the patches didn't work for me (or I did something wrong, always a possibility but I've had no problems patching other N64 files) so I'm hoping someone who has the working patched game roms will put them up somewhere for download.

I remember the 2 unreleased arcade games from Seta that use the same Aleck 64 board:

.
Is there any change these games seeing the light of the day ???
Title: Re: Aleck64

OS 2.09 does work on these, just have to turn the CRC Check option off.  Thanks for the tweak Mr. Krikzz!  Really cool.  A traditional Japanese schmup like Star Solider was vacant on N64.  The other games are fun too.

I nearly skipped over this thread but Im glad I didnt, I would have missed the OS update hehehe...

As for CRC check, All Demos fail CRC but run normally after pressing A, so, to say that it doesnt work is wrong.
To classify something as not working it must actually not boot. (or crash mid game etc)

I do know that if a rom calls osSyncPrintf() it will crash as it requires the PC connection.

Someone wanted the good unpatched Eleven Beat ROM.

Here's the link to the good unpatched ROM:  https://www.sendspace.com/file/84762g

I found it in a MAME 0.158 thread on RetroRoms:  http://www.retroroms.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=63289#forumpost63289

The ROM needs to be byteswapped before applying the patch.

Enjoy!

I can't play these on my TV, the resolution must be too low for my (PAL) TV, I just get a black screen even though the music plays which shows that the problem is the TV and not the N64 or the rom files. Some other NTSC games do this, such as the NTSC version of Indiana Jones, which again just leaves my TV screen totally black, and NTSC Perfect Dark, which goes black for the opening N64 to PD rotating effect, but then the TV starts displaying Perfect Dark correctly when the select-your-profile menu appears, and then plays OK all through the game, thankfully.

also inside the Cheaterdragon1 archive why is there a tower&shaft.eep file aswell as the n64 file? can the everdrive 64 not creat an eep file for this game or something.

I *think* Zoinkity said that the save unlocked some things in the game, but I can't remember exactly, and I can't now find the post where he mentions it, sorry.

The .eep is needed for the options. You have to copy it into your save files folder.

i kinda figured the epp file would need to go in the save folder but i was wondering why it was included but thats been cleared up thanks to you guys.
Title: Re: Aleck64
Post by: cheaterdragon1 on February 18, 2015, 03:51 AM
One thing I forgot guys, be sure to update the "save_db.txt" text file which is found in your ED64 folder:

http://micro-64.com/features/everdrive/save_db.txt

I have placed all 6 of the currently working Aleck 64 games in there. 5/6 of them definitely use saving. They don't use it for saving game progress though, usually it's just for high scores and any settings you change. Eleven Beat is the only one that wasn't saving for me and possibly might not save at all but I still put it in the save_db.txt file anyway just in case.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the people that worked on the patches for these games, and for the people sharing links to patched games.  Brilliant!  Are there any more of these yet to patch?  I saw the last comment there about an game yet to be dumped.

Uh sorry to revive a dead thread. No matter where I go I never see this mentioned on Aleck64 lists. Hi Pai Paridise 2 appears to also an Aleck64 game. Is this known? Being 2004 makes it the last known Aleck64 game
http://gfront.sblo.jp/article/136201625.html

And it's definitely the sequal because the first 1 looks completely different.

These are both from gfront which is an arcade preservation group I know nothing about. I found them looking for all images related to the Aleck games. I know literally 0 people here care about Hi Pai, just wanted to make it known incase it wasn't already. Unless I'm missing something obvious this game doesn't seem to have a N64 patch like all the other Aleck games

You are correct.  It's also listed in wikipedia with the other Aleck64 games: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SETA_Corporation#Aleck_64_.28arcade.29

You may have to track down Zoinkity to see if he is still interested in converting these.  It would be the last one until the other two unreleased Aleck64 games are dumped.  The original thread is on Assembler Games: https://assemblergames.com/threads/aleck64-on-retail-consoles-poc.55041/  I don't think Zoinkity checks back there often since the major outage at the beginning of the year, but it might be a place to start.

I am actually interested in it.  I was looking into translating the Aleck64 games before I got sidetracked by SSSV and Sim City 64.  I think I have all of the text in Hi Pai Paradise already mapped out along with Tower & Shaft.  I still hope to get back to them some day.

I guess we don't count as people.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like Hi Pai Paradise 2 is undumped.  I'd be willing to attempt the conversion if it were released and Zoinkity wasn't interested.  He would definitely be the better choice for hacking it though.

I could be wrong, but it looks like it is for sale here: https://www.suruga-ya.jp/kaitori_detail/181050153 or https://www.suruga-ya.jp/kaitori_detail/180050153

Looks like it. The first link includes the board, instruction card, manual and mahjong connector. The second one is only the board and mahjong connector. Cabinet, control panel or harness aren't included in either.

If you want to you can try my altra64 os. If it says that the crc is ok, I will try to port it to the unofficial official os... otherwise just select the Rom and turn off crc checking ('z' options)

Thank Zoinkity. Last year it was really bugging me that all but 1 Aleck game was dumped, but I figured Mahjong Games people usually didn't care about. I hope to play it soon. I learned how to play Shogi and Hanafuda to play the N64 games, so soon I wanna do all the Mahjong titles as well

That's awesome!  And not the only Zoinkity Aleck64 news for today:

https://www.romhacking.net/translations/4228/

He translated Tower and Shaft for the Aleck64.  Right before Sim City 64, I actually looked into translating this.  Made notes and even started extracting textures and things.  The storyline looked like it could be interesting.  The gameplay is simplistic, but frustratingly difficult at times.

Nicely done Zoinkity!

Speaking of Tower and Shaft, I remember playing a game with striking similarity for Mac in 1996 or 1997 called NS-Tower. Does anyone know what this genre of games is called? Where did it begin?

Well I'm no expert but the NS-Tower and NS-Shaft were shareware games released in 1996 on Macintosh PCs and later Windows in 1997 by Nagi-P Soft. They were Nagi-P Soft's most popular games so they occasionally received free updates and the company continued to distribute these simple games for over 20 years across many platforms. As early as 2003 the games were made available on mobile phones and the same year Nagi-P Soft licensed the Aleck64 arcade remakes, which eventually got updated GBA ports in 2004 in Japan. So yes these games have striking similarity because they are supposed to be the same series. Just about every early 2000s cell phone probably had these games pre-installed on them

Not sure what you would call the genre, but if you google vertical platformers or vertical scrolling platformers that's what most people call them. Nowadays they are quite common in the indie space with games like Towerclimb and Downwell but they are both much more complicated. I can think of many games before 1997 with vertical sections or levels. Kid Icarus is almost all vertical but it doesn't scroll automatically or anything. Not sure what the first game that was all vertical autoscrolling would have been, probably some games on home computer systems had to have tried something similar

This might be gauche but the original link for the "Hi Pai Paradise 2" Aleck64 conversion is gone now. Would anyone here have another one?
