Is there any real difference, hardware wise, aside from a different pin connector. Just curious.

This is great news!  I was wondering if the projected cost is around the same as the NFC version, or will this PCB be a higher cost?

seriously i think a bit more cost wise is fair enough. if i would have purchased the famicom n8 then i would have had to tracked down a converter so it kinda evens out i guess.

@ dvd2vcd have you looked for video fixes for pal games like the lion king or are there none available? i know nothing about hacking roms but i would have thought that it would be a simple job for anyone with the know how to fix screen modes.
i guess most people use emulators for nes and nobody has looked into region video fixes. now with more nes flashcarts available maybe someone will look into it.

There is no way to ''patch'' a PAL nes game to convert it to NTSC like it is sometime possible with newer generation console. The reason for this is that PAL and NTSC NES have different CPU. The NTSC console use a 2A03 CPU while the PAL model use 2A07, which is a tad slower. The same goes for the PPU which is different and slightly slower in the PAL model. So, since NES games were coded with a very specific clock rate in mind, it is impossible to simply patch a game's region without major recoding. Some game will work even when played with a faster or slower clock rate but might display various GFX bugs and anomaly. The music will also be affected. For example, you can play The Smurf (PAL) on a NTSC console, but it will be a bit faster and the sprite of the last boss will be completely messed up making it pretty hard to finish the game.

Good question! My guess is NO though, if this flashcart follows the trend of krikzz's other early flashcart sales, which never came with a sticker.  ???

Oh, this is great news.
BUT I allready ordered the N8 from italy (and the n64 and megadrive form England. WTB SNES being in stock!). I was lucky tho, I have a old NES here with 1 crappy game inside that was given back to me years ago and sat in the shed. The good news is the game has the NES converter in it haha!
I have also ordered two clear pal nes casses from elsewhere to put it all un so I should be good to go. WTB one of those case stickers tho.

You mean like that $20 board that you plug on the bottom of the NES with that Famicom Expansion slot on it?

The name escapes me right now. I think it's called ASIO or something like that.

enio exp board, but you don't need that if you solder a resister to pins 3 and 9 on the motherboard's exp pinouts

Wait, I don't get it. The upcoming Everdrive N8 will be the same N8-Famicom ONLY with NES adapter included? I thought it'll be native full-pin hardware flash cart without any adapter, just like PowerPak.

People, Krikzz posted a picture of the PCB, it's not that complicated to figure out. It's the everdrive n8 with 72 pin to run natively on the NES. Only difference is that it include Krilzz universal lock-out chip and full sized SD card slot.

But it could have been a version "1.5". The same EverDrive with some extras (pins).

I'm not saying they should be functional but at least have the circuit assembly, so in the future implement by software

I love the work you did Krikzz with all everdrive series
I have the 60-72 pin adapter. But expected more for the NES version. For that reason, do not buy the version of Famicom

Some of the extra pins is used by the CIC lockout chip.
You want it to use extra pins for extra features exclusive to the NES version? Wouldn't that disappoint Famicom users?
Title: Re: N8-NES
Post by: SkinnyV on April 12, 2013, 04:10 AM
All the necessery pins are connected, I'm not sure what you're getting at about having the extra pin and circuit assembly for future update. There is nothing more to connect to have more "feature" added in the future. Take a look at the cart pinout and you'll see that the pin are all there for a precise reason and you can't just make up new feature by using this or that extra pins as you go.

Those extra pins can not help to implement any extra functions, and nes carts does not have any extra function compare to famicom. So,magnus87, why it should be connected? Just to be connected because they exist?

I have a question on this:

This NES version operates the EXACT same way as if you bought the Famicom Board and used the Gyromite Adapter?

My friend wants one done this way and I just want to make sure before I tell him what to buy. If there is truly no difference, I'll just tell him to get the Everdrive Famicom board and the Gyromite Cart. This way, no cutting is to be required.

@wolfpacleader1986 it depends what system your friend has, i have a famicom av and the edn8 cos of the superior sound :) as soon as krikzz announced the edn8 i bought the famicom av right away lol

if your friend has a nes console then just buy the nes version, adapters are bit tricky to grab nowadays cos they aint in all gyromite carts :) i can tell you that first hand lol i ended up buying a retail boxed adapter which cost me £40  :o

well not exactly the same lol, adopters of the fami+converter n8 deal still gotta solder a wire in their converters  ;)  making the new one alot better deal unless your like me and didn't want a single hole in your cart lol

edit: ^ i guess i should mention that the wire in the converter is only for getting hte extra famicom sound channels
Title: Re: N8-NES
Post by: goombakid on April 13, 2013, 03:05 AM
If you want Famicom sound from your NES. (http://callanbrown.com/index.php/castlevania-iii-with-full-famicom-audio) TBH, the Konami extra sound (Akumajou Densetsu/Castlevania 3) is not fully emulated yet (at least, I'm not hearing it from my N8/Famicom combo)

If you're gonna be using it in an NES anyway, just get the NES version. Access to the SD card should be there for ease of updating the ED's OS. Even if the N8-NES version is gonna be a bit more expensive than the N8-Fami, it'll probably be cheaper than paying and over-inflated eBay price on an NES Gyromite that may or may not have the converter in it and the N8 Famicom and whatever mods you need to do to the adapter.

Title: Re: N8-NES
Post by: SkinnyV on April 13, 2013, 03:10 AM
The extra sound channel is emulated, your famicom adapter and nes are probably not modded to allow it.

You don't seem very familiar with the technical side of the NES or the role of the pins on the cart edge connector. Every pins had a specific role, those are not magic ''do anything you want'' pins, there is nothing else anyone can do with those pins. They are not extra I/O pin like on a micro-controller that you can decide to support and do random thing with them.
Title: Re: N8-NES
Post by: rimsky82 on April 19, 2013, 05:18 PM
IIRC, the "extra pins" in the center of the cart edge are for the unused port on the bottom of the NES.  So there's really no using them unless you plan on adding some extra hardware as well, and even then I don't know what that could be used for.  Cart expansion?  NES 32X?   :o ???

NTRQ seem to work fine. I tested the other and they all run except PR8 that apear to load and then freeze (or at least I think it is). Thing is t hat I have no idea how to use most of those music software. Cajones was making music like it should though. I guess we will have to wait for someone used to tracker software to test them and report more useful information.

RickyKustafason, thats a decent collection you have there, i love the shelving unit thats just perfect :)

Hey thanks!  The desk is a wal-mart special haha.   I bought 2 of them and just took the hutch part of the second one and bolted it on top of the first one so it would give me a lot of shelving.

So yea can't wait to get the NES N8..but I have to put in my PPU mod for the RGB output on the toploader NES.

I believe I actually got it for a decent price. $200 is what I payed. It has gone up in price since though.
I'm not planning on selling just yet though. I'm just saying that I might have waited if I had known there was a project like this going on and making good progress.

I bought mine here

yup, that is a good price. the seller said prices will go up and it looks he/she holds his/her promises.

it is best to use this on an AV famicom. a RGB AV famicom is the best thing to play nes games. at least for now.

Post by: Captain N on May 04, 2013, 02:35 AM
Yeah, I was planning on using it on my AV Famicom (Which I actually purchased because of the N8)

I live in Denmark and as far as I have been told, PAL NESes can't be RGB modded.
Only problem I'm facing now is finding a AC/DC adapter for the AV Famicom that'll work here in Europe since there weren't included with the console :/

here is a good tip for you. As you are in Europe, you can easily find a sega mega drive 2 charger. it is the same with AV famicom but with one big difference. the inside is + on the sega mega drive 2, while it is - on AV famicom. so change the polarity of the tip and you are ready to go. you can cut the wire and rewire it to make - side +, and + side -.

alternatively you can use a 9 v generic charger with interchangeable plugs.

Post by: Captain N on May 04, 2013, 03:06 AM
I know it sounds easy but I have little to no technical expertiese with that sort of stuff.

Is there somewhere I can just buy the finished product where I won't have to mod/solder/rewire anything?

i bought mine locally so i can't give a link.

you can buy a generic charger with 9 V, about 1 A power.

a very important thing to look for is it must be center pin negative. most chargers you can find has center pin positive, if you plug one of these to your av famicom, you will say goodbye to it.

I wouldn't really know what to look for to make sure that wouldn't happen. I'll probably just embarrass myself even more with my lack of knowledge on this subject.

Do you have link for a product that can do all those things you say and still work in a EU socket?

This'll work:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-UK-MAINS-POWER-SUPPLY-9V-24V-AC-DC-1A-PSU-CHARGER-ADAPTER-12-18-20-/370729363055?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item565131266f

Do as reprep says and make sure your polarity is correct or your console goes boom.
Don't trust your AV Famicom's life to guesswork based on tiny plastic symbols. Buy a cheap multimeter. Set it to DC Voltage. Stick the red prong in the center and the black prong on the outside. Is the number displayed on your meter negative 9V? Good. Is it positive 9V? BOOM.

The link Grambo posted will work well. i use the nearly same thing (but with 2 socket euro plug). of course these are cheap chinese chargers and to be sure, do as Grambo says to check polarity. Mine works well, but no one can guarantee yours will too. also i bought mine at about 5 gbp locally. that is way too overpriced.

it can be plugged to your console with center pin positive or negative. look at the sign at the final plug. you can also use the same charger on your NES,SNES and sega mega drive.

Also how do you plan to fit that RGB ppu to your AV famicom? it is a really hard work to do. do you know any place which can do this? i too plan to buy one but i don't have the skill to fit the ppu to the board.

I'm still not entirely sure on how to check the polarity, neither before bying or after,
I also don't know how to change polarities. Like I said. I have no technical know-how myself.

I would prefer a EU standard plug. Those UK ones are so big and ugly :/

I have a friend that I am paying to install the PPU for me. He's kind of an expert when it comes to console modding.
I don't really know any sites that offer to mod stuff for you.

I know it's possible to buy a Everdrive NES cart including case on some shops. But does anyone sell only cases for the Everdrive for NES?

I already ordered a Everdrive NES without case.

(I'm aware that i can buy some crappy game and modify the case but i'm lazy and wondering if anyone sells premodded case only)

Hey guys!

I was just wondering: I own a completely normal and standard european nes. If i buy this cartridge, can i use it without having to make any further modifications? do i have sound and everything?

and another question to retrogate: from where do they ship? do i have to pay taxes if i order to austria?

and do i need to order a cartridge with usb port if i just want to play standard nes games?

thanks for reading!!

1* Yes, it all works. A few games may be unsoported but 99.9% work. You will need a SD card
2. From the Ukrane.
3* Shouldnt have to pay tax as its a very small item doller wise. I dont know your country but here is Australia the min is $1000 before we supposed to pay tax
4* No need for the USB port

By the way, it's MAX 75 EUR here in Turkey and when it exceeds that amount, we supposed to pay the Customs tax, yes, a HORRIBLE limit. So my question would be the following; Would Retrogate declare a lower amount for the sake of preventing the tax for its customers?
Many thanks.

In Finland they just lowered the Tax/Customs free limit to 20 euros outside EU.
