Fantastic!  Does mapper 31 support mean NSF files can now be played back on the console?

Mapper 31 does not play NSFs, it's merely based on the NSF format. It was something InfiniteNESLives and I made for music compilation ROMs like this one: http://rainwarrior.ca/projects/nes/pico.html (http://rainwarrior.ca/projects/nes/pico.html)

The new mappers outside 31 deal almost exclusively with Sachen games.  Odd that mapper 168 is included, it only works with Racermate II.  Racemate II is useless unless you have the special hardware that came with the software.

The list of incompatible games included with the mapper file is somewhat inaccurate.  In many cases, the game works just fine but the ROM headers from the No-Intro group need to be fixed.  No Intro is good for dumping but pays too little attention to the added headers necessary for software and hardware emulation.  Also, many games using certain mappers like 5 use advanced features which are not emulated and are not really compatible in any real sense of the term.  My own lists are more accurate here :

no-intro dumps and preserves the game ROM itself and stores information like a checksum and serial number etc of the game. Headers are not their work and are completely ignored by tools like Romcenter because these are NOT meant to be there at all in radical preservation metters. It's hand made additional stuff only needed for emulators. This was already discussed on SNES, but there they are even more useless.

It's hand made additional stuff only needed for emulators. This was already discussed on SNES, but there they are even more useless.

Licensed SNES games have their own built-in header, but this header does not identify all the special chips that were used.  The games which use a special chip are known and finite.  The games that require more specifity only number 15-18.  The internal header gives the ROM size, the RAM size and whether it needs HiROM or LoROM mapping and whether it uses FastROM or SlowROM.  This is sufficient for 98% of games.

The Gameboy and Gameboy Color ROMs also have an internal header, which gives the ROM & RAM sizes and the MBC mapper the game uses, if any.  It can also tell you if the game requires a RTC or supports the Rumble Pak.

When it comes to the N64 and the GBA, there is a header but it does not tell you what the save type of the game is (sram, flash, eeprom) or what CIC the cart uses (N64 only).  But that information is known and can be stored in a database.

But when almost all NES cartridges use a mapper chip, you need to know what mapper it uses, otherwise it won't run.  You also need to know if there is CHR-ROM and how much there is and whether the cartridge uses S-RAM.  Otherwise you can't know how the game works, and if you don't know that, then you haven't preserved the game.

Hi. Return to menu with reset stopped working on a Super Retro Trio after this update, it stuck on the OS Init message and you need to power off :-\ , reverted to v13 and works again. See ya.

I got the same thing at first, but after deleting the EDFC folder and putting it back a few times, I finally got OS 14 working. This was both on an AVS and AV Famicom.

I tested it again and this time worked, it seems the first time EDN8 read the v14 EDFC folder it fail to reset but the next is fine, same as Brian (in my case was updated to 14, back to 13, and again to 14). See ya.

Change the Mapper to 2 in the ROM header for Micro Machines, that will fix the glitch graphics.  The others I can get working without glitches on my NES PowerPak.

This is the way to go, I got the 3rd party mappers for VRC6 and Sunsoft 5B working correctly only after doing this.  The 3rd party mappers get copied last.

After several days after installing the new update, I had trouble in OS too. The message "OS Init ..." appears and gets stuck on this screen. So I have to delete and copy again EDFC folder to return to work.
But if I play several games at once and some with save function, the problem of "OS Init ..." back!
Well, now I decided to go back. to V.13.
I believe Krikzz is looking for some solution to this.

Brand new Everdrive n8 received on Friday and tested over a 100 roms over the weekend on my Famicom with and without saves and had no issues of OS init or any problems on a Kingston 4GB MicroSD.  Maybe it's a SD card size/brand/format/defrag issue for others?

...Hate to add to the mix of problems but yeah, OSv14 has a little problem with the AVS in terms of "OS Init..." when using a button combo to return to the AVS main menu. It hangs when starting the n8 from a button reboot, however resetting the AVS fixes it. Not a huge deal on my end but I thought I'd note it just in case someone else has a similar problem...

Oh god I just knew it. I remember struggling with the audio levels on my AV Famicom when I was told to set the audio mix to "LO". So I did, and most problems were fixed. on the games were still too loud, I installed custom mappers to fix these. They only worked well with the LO setting.

If I upgrade to V14, I'm going to be blasted out of my chair. I don't think I can upgrade. And before anyone bring it up -- no, prying open my Famicom and soldering a resistor isn't really a good "solution" to a problem that can be solved (and was solved, I might add) in software.

(Some of us do like the convenience of controllers not wired to the unit!)

delete edfc folder on your sdcard and copy new to sdcard, first time i just overwrite it,and also init os freeze.
after that it works fine here.
Title: Re: EDN8 OS V14
Post by: KRIKzz on November 13, 2016, 02:08 PM
All those problems with "OS init" freeze happens due mapper files fragmentation. Cartridge supports ROM files fragmentation, but system files in EDFC folder should be not fragmented. To avoid fragmentation you should delete all files inside of EDFC folder (may be except save folder) and then copy new files. Copying of new files over old files usually results to fragmentation (at least this is true for windows machines). Also i recomend to use biggest possible allocation unit size during sd formatting (32KB). This reduce possibility of fragmentation and make everdrive disk access work faster. I follow this simple rules and never had any problems after OS files update

I always delete the EDFC folder (except save folder) before updating the OS, but I still got the "OS Init..." freeze bug with os v15 whenever I press the reset button, and the N8 is set to "reset to menu". It's not a big problem, the menu loads like normal when turning the system off and on again.
Maybe I should reformat the card?

You have to reformat for OS v15.
I had the same problems and after reformat like Krikzz's told us, it runs perfectly again!

I have the OS init bug i think. I don't know is it bug or not. But it was not happening on OS 13. I tried 15. Now it freezes on os init. When i hit reset then the os init will hang but when i press power button then it loads normally. Also when im on games menu and press reset, it resets normally. But when in game then it freezes to os init or blank screen.

you need defragment your sd
newer OS does not have extra memory to read fragment files

So first it started with light gun games not working properly. So I reformatted my Sd card, first in fat32 32kb. I added OS v15 and it would load. However, as soon as I put ANY game onto the SD CARD and try to load it into the Everdrive, it freezes on OS init. I then tried formatting fat 32 64kb. Same thing. OS v15 would load with not games on it. As soon as I add games, OS init freeze. Any ideas? I've read pretty much everything posted regarding it and nothing works as soon as I add games.

I guess it can be fixed on both AVS or everdrive side, but i think that in such situations device which released later should be adapted for all what were released before and not visa versa. Thank you for an a awesome product.

If it helps, I noticed that on earlier versions of AVS, some FDS games had minor flickering, but not the standard FC and NES games and on later versions it's vice versa. Some games I recently had flickering on are Castlevania/Akumajo Dracula FC (mostly noticable at the entering the castle gates intro), games using the SMB1 engine (white specs on green objects, less noticable after last AVS update), Mega Man (between boss intro), TMNT Arcade JPN, both Flintstones games, and Nightshade. I also noticed a few OSes ago on both AV Famicom and AVS that headered FDS games would often automatically delete their headers and sometimes get corrupted.

I'm using the FC style N8 that I ordered from here with the awesome red shell.

Not possible, the N8 only supports up to 512KB of PRG-ROM and Action 52 uses 1,536KB of PRG-ROM.
