Title: Comparison Between Everdrive GB (original) and GB x7?
Post by: RetroRGB on October 13, 2017, 10:19 PM
Is something like this posted anywhere?  I see the differences between the x3, x5 and x7, but not the x7 and original.

So you are required to use the soft reset feature just to not loose your saves? That's crazy!
Mega Drive and N64 Everdrives where also missing batteries but at least those systems has a hardware reset button.

So does the GB now, the EDGB x3 has a button under the hump that literally resets the GB, it works extremely well imho.
On the x5 I think it's used for InGameMenu, not sure what it does in the x7 (maybe the same)

@lee4 - Thanks very much for your reply.

I was confused about this as well.  Apparently, ONLY the x3 requires resetting to the main menu.  All other versions (including the original) just save automatically.
...although I think the trick of loading another game for the sav file to dump to SD still applies.

Game Boy Pocket problem plagues both original and X series
due Game Boy Pocket power up too slow for Everdrive to work

Game Boy Pocket takes over 35ms to fully power up
meanwhile all others GB & GBC takes about 12ms to fully power up

current workaround power on, off and on again (jump start the Everdrive)

So it's a hard reset button connected to the reset pin? That's perfect if that is the case. But it says on the main page that it's software reset?

The X3 probably requires resetting because it's missing a battery, it needs to dump the save file to SD or you will loose it when you power off (resetting doesn't cut the power to the sram so the save is safe in there). Loading another game shouldn't be necessary. That's how other Everdrives without battery works anyway.

I can't say for sure but I can tell you on the GBBoy (I do not have an original GameBoy) I can press the button during the boot animated sequence and it restarts it so it may well be the reset pin.
During game if you press it it goes back all the way to the boot animated sequence then menu.

Personally, I have not had to do that with my EverDrive GB and GBP.  With reasonably fresh batteries or charged Eneloops, the original EverDrive GB works reliably for me without having to switch on and off.

Sorry for necroing, but would it be possible to get a further clarification on the following points:

* Instant loading | How does it work? Does it have an effect on ROM compability?
* Low power consumption | How much? By what mechanism does is this lower consumption able to be achieved?
* High quality 4-layers PCB | How does it differ from the old, non-'X' model of the Everdrive GB?

1. Different components / chips on the X models allow for pretty much instant loading. It doesn't affect ROM compatibility.
2. Same as 1, redesigned board components / chips allow for lower power consumptions. It is quite significant on the X revision.
3. This is a sales point for hardware geeks only, the old EDGB was already finely built as it was ^^

The original EDGB uses flash RAM to hold the current game ROM, and loading a game requires first erasing the flash, then writing the game. Flash RAM writes are of course slower than DRAM/SRAM. The X series instead uses a DRAM (or was it SRAM?) to hold the game ROM, so copying the game into RAM is much faster. Thus, while it isn't truly "instant", it is a heck of a lot faster.
