Title: [Help] grey screen with Everdrive N8 Pro + Famicom AV + NESRGB + NESRGB-IGR
Post by: heldma1m on February 13, 2020, 07:51 PM
Hi,

I've similar issues with the N8 Pro than the guys with Hi-def addon and a N8 Pro.

I'm getting most of the time a grey screen and if I'm getting an menu, I've no issues to play my games. I'm using an Famicom AV with a new 9V MeanWell power supply. I've also installed a NESRGB and a NESRGB-IGR. I'm also tried to reset the console, if I'm getting the grey screen and re-insert the SD card with no success.
I've also tried other SD cards (Sandisk 8GB with Fat32 and a Samsung Evo 64GB with Fat32) both with the same grey screen.
I've installed the latest Firmware 2.06 on the SD card.
It looks like the SD card initiation process is to fast and the rest of the modul is not ready, maybe a power consumption issue.
I've also tried an other N8 Pro from a friend of mine with the same behavior.

I've no issues with original cartridges or connect issues.

Do you've any ideas?

Thanks & Br

Ok, I found a workaround here. Holding reset while powering on the Famicom.

http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=9549.msg72357#msg72357

Is there a solution or do I've to remove the NESRGB-IGR?

Did you move the reset capacitor to the nesrgb-igr?

I've the borti4938 IGR. I can't find this on the installation pic.

I already tried this FW, but this didn't help. :-(

So, I only have to add a 4,7u cap on the Reset out pad of the IGR pcb and everything is working fine?

I just want to make it clear, I don't know if this is your problem, this is a guess and while I have a nes toploader (not famicom) with nesrgb and nesrgb-igr with the reset cap moved to the igr board, I only own the original n8 and not the pro so I can't test, if there is a broader incompatibility. That being said, what you're seeing sounds like the problem that was reported in that twitter thread, that certain games will fail to boot regularly unless the reset button is pushed during start up on the toploader when nesrgb-igr is installed and the solution is to move the capacitor from the reset line to the board. That is why voultar added vias to his later revision of that mod to make the move easier, however you should see the same result, if you connect the cap to reset_out and ground.

I'v added a 4,7u capacitor to the Reset out line, but I've still the same issue -> grey screen.

Judging from your picture it looks like you installed the capacitor inline with the wire allready attached to reset_out, however it is supposed to connect to reset_out and ground. Maybe take another look at the picture voultar posted on twitter.

I've changed the cap to ground and now it is working. :) But the normal reset isn't working anymore. If I understand Voultar correctly, I must connect another wire from the Reset out of the IGR to the PPU Reset PIN that isn't connected to the NES mainboard anymore.

I've tried to implent the fully reset as described by Voultar. -> https://twitter.com/Voultar/status/1083446963570466817
The PPU / Reset Pin doesn't have contact to the Famicom mainboard, but if I press the Reset Button for a short time, I'm getting a black screen, so I've to power off and power on the famicom again.
I think, I only reset the PPU and not CPU as well.
Do I've to wire anything else?

Thanks & Best regards

Have you removed the original 4.7uF capacitor from the AV Famicom motherboard? Only it looks like its still there on your photos. Its supposed to be relocated to the IGR board:-
https://twitter.com/Voultar/status/1083443834191822848
It looks like you used a new 4.7uF capacitor instead? Not sure if leaving the original capacitor in place is the correct thing to do.

Also, I cant see any wire going from the IGR boards RST OUT back to the AV Famicom's reset switch on your latest photo? Did you remove this wire? This is the wire that resets the CPU, its supposed to still be connected as well as adding the 4.7uF capacitor to ground.

I wouldn't bother with the additional PPU reset until you have the circuit correct.

Here is a new pic from the wiring. The old cap is still in place.

Here are new pics from the wiring.
Glad you restored the RST OUT wire.

The old cap is still in place.
Ok, but that cap is now still in the circuit on the reset line, when it isn't supposed to be if you have added it to the IGR board.

Where is your RST OUT wire connecting to? Its supposed to look like this:-

With the original cap removed as per Voultar's twitter comment.

The original wiring isn't working for me with the N8 Pro and the rail to the cap is cut through. That was the reason why I haven't removed the cap.

The original wiring isn't working for me with the N8 Pro.
Right, but thats possibly because of the 4.7uF capacitor, not the wiring (Either that or the N8 PRO is incompatible with the IGR board entirely, I dont have an N8 PRO to test)

This is also happening with some original Games, so it is definitive the IGR.

Yes but that can also happen because of the 4.7uF capacitor, as mentioned on twitter:-

Right, but one leg of the cap isn't connected on the circuit. So I think it doesn't matter. There is a cut between the reset in and the cap as you can see on this pic.

No, it matters.

The IGR boards RST OUT line is supposed to connect to the consoles CPU reset. You have removed this wire and are now wondering why the CPU will not reset. The 4.7uF capacitor on the mainboard is on the CPU reset line and is connected to ground, the trace cut you made only isolates the reset switch for the RST IN signal to the IGR board. Voultar's twitter posts say that your supposed to remove the original 4.7uF capacitor and move it to the IGR board.

Not to sound funny but are you actually looking for suggestions/help? I only ask as it doesn't feel like your understanding the issues with the wiring and the problem with leaving the original 4.7uF capacitor in place.

Yes, I'm looking for help to have a working reset and the palette switch through the reset button. I'm a little bit confused. What I've to do. Reset out of the IGR is now connected to the GND with a 4,7u cap in between and a second wire is connected to the reset pin of the PPU. You mentioned I only have to remove the 4,7u cap from the famicom mainboard and that's it?

Ok, you can try removing the AV Famicom motherboards original 4.7uF capacitor and move the second wire (RST OUT) from the PPU reset pin back to where it shows "Rst_o" on this photo (Where one of the original capacitor legs was, but make sure to use the correct hole/via as shown in the photo)

Ok, I will do this, but than I don't understand Voultar's second post to have a working reset.
Original NES systems reset both the CPU and PPU at the same time, other models like the NES Toploader/Famicom/AV Famicom only reset the CPU, this is completely normal.

Voultar was saying that if you wanted to make the whole system reset behave exactly like the original NES models then you could add a PPU reset signal, but its not necessary for the IGR to work correctly.

Once your get the IGR working correctly you could optionally add a 'third wire' to reset the PPU as well, but there is really no need to.

...Lets just try and get the basics working correctly first!

Ok I would recommend holding on for now and not changing anything yet. I noticed an error in the installation guide on github (Original capacitor is 0.47uF, not 4.7uF ) so i'm going to contact borti4938 to hopefully clarify things.

Did this get figured out? I just got my install from voultar and Im having the same issue. I can get the n8 pro to load when pressing reset but I lose control over the pallettes and its automaticalling scrolling through them by itself and never stops.

If Voultar did the install, we can assume, that he moved the cap correctly (he came up with that fix after all) and this is an unrelated issue. Is yours one of the earlier carts? Maybe you need to exchange it for one of the newer ones that include a fix for the non working high def nes systems.

Is the fix just changing it from 5v to 3.3v? I was going to try that but for sone reason I couldnt get the solder to melt, I guess my soldering iron doesnt get hot enough.

I think the issue isn't related to the N8 Pro. The only solution right now is to remove the NESRGB-IGR.
