EverDrive 64 / Re: Holy Grail of N64 gaming?
« on: October 08, 2014, 03:44 AM »
i have to agree with you. Zelda was always more fun than mario for me. I know its blasphemous, but i don't like Super Mario 64.
What's really blasphemous is that I didn't like SM64 OR OOT. And these days, OOT is too ugly for me to go back and play...I just don't think it aged well. Even the HD mod for emulators and the 3DS remake don't do it for me.

I played through quite a bit of it but apparently I missed the spot as young link to learn Epona's song, so when I got older, Epona didn't recognize me. I got tired of running around on foot everywhere and a friend of mine who had recently beat it said the ending sucked, so I never finished it. My old save may still be good if anyone knows of a way around this...the primitive internet of the time told me that it was impossible once I passed that part. I've not tried to research it again since. And I restarted the game 3 or 4 times and just can't get into it again.

And it's not because the 3D platforming did me in, as I had a PSX before N64. I just didn't care for those two games. There were plenty of other games on 64 that I loved - it's a great system. I actually do enjoy SM64 now and do plan to go back and finish it one of these days. As for OOT, maybe when the 2D remake comes out in like a decade or whatever :P

Quite liked OoT, but I have to admit it hasn't aged well.  I do enjoy the remake, but it doesn't have that same draw as the original did back then.

Thank you so much, TheRetromancer!  And as for your Portuguese, I can assure you that your Portuguese is better than many here in Brazil can speak.

Estou lisonjeado, antonioks.
I'm flattered, antonioks.  Hopefully we can find a proper solution to your problems.

No, you misunderstood. See, I want to hack ocarina of time v1.0 to enable map select. I want to use a hex editor. But I can only modify up to 2 digits. I want to apply gameshark codes to a hex editor like for example, 815A265B 4653. I cant modify this code because it only lets 2 digits, not 4.

Sounds like you need a bit of a primer on patching and Gameshark codes.

Those first two digits, 81, mean to write 2 bytes to the address defined by the next 6 digits, in this case 0x5A265B, with value 0x4653.

But you'll need to find the ROM address, which means you'll need to do a bit of subtraction.  So you take 5A265B, subtract 245000, and you get the address of 35D65B.  So you go to offset 0x35D65B and change its value to 4653.

This, however, changes the checksum, which will cause the game not to load, because all of the ROM range between 0x1000 and 0x100000 is checksum protected.  You can either use a checksum recalculator, or you can get rid of the CRC check entirely by NOPing out two instructions in the ROM:

0x066C: BNE A3, T0, 0x800001C8
0x0678: BNE S0, T0, 0x800001C8

Assman, in EA games (as is the case with "Rolo to the Rescue") it scrolls fine, but when it goes to the next stage and shows the map screen, above the map is a horizontal line of white dots.  And as soon as it loads, when you enter the new area of the game, there on the black background are a bunch of blinking white dots.  This only happens in EA games, if I put in a European game, I get dashed lines at the top.  My MegaDrive is a Brazilian PAL-M model - I have tested this on three separate TVs:  a 14" LG, a 29" LG, and a 32" Samsung LCD HDTV, all using regular AV cables, and a 2Gb Kingston microSD card.

In the case of "Eternal Champions", the menus are normal, but in the battle screen, I get a black background and a flashing screen.  The thing is, the whole screen doesn't flash - just random parts of it.  I've tried the USA ROM and the JAP ROM, with no change.  This is my only MegaDrive, and unfortunately 99% of all MDs suffer from rainbow banding. :-\
I'm honestly thinking about buying a SCART cable and either an HDMI adapter or a component one, which I've heard is supposed to get rid of the rainbow banding.  Thank you all very much!

I strongly recommend getting a SCART cable, antonioks.  I'm not sure about the other problems you have, but using RGB or component will definitely get rid of the rainbow banding problem.

Also...please try to use punctuation.  It's very difficult to translate a giant sentence, and I want to do my best to help you.  Also, my Portuguese isn't perfect, so that will help a lot.  Thanks!

Try to say it in Portuguese; I'll do my best to translate for you.

I never got Mario 64 back in the day - I got my N64 for Christmas with MRC Multi-Racing Championship (one of the crappiest games ever made, but I still love it regardless), Star Fox, and Diddy Kong Racing along with the Mad Katz racing wheel controller.

My N64 platforming was solely defined by Banjo-Kazooie, which was far and away superiour to SM64, so when I played it for the first time about two years ago (aside from mucking about with it in Blockbuster Kiosks back when), I couldn't really get into it.

It actually does simulate the BIOS in a high level way, the Famicom disk system theme is missing and no bios is supplied with the os and it isn't required in the ROM set.

Could easily be integrated in the FPGA, or even just a part of the on-board BIOS IC.

The N8 can play FDS roms without the FDS being present - it loads the FDS BIOS and mimics (to lesser or greater degree) the hardware of the FDS.
I don't think it even loads the BIOS. It probably mimics that too.

Doubtful.  From what I understand, the BIOS is loaded exactly like an NES game is before searching for a game - the FDS seems to literally act as a passthrough adapter for the disks.  It would be much simpler to just load the BIOS for all FDS games on the N8 than it would be to code an emulated BIOS.

About Super Mario 64 being fake...
If it is fake, why all the loading times? In fact, why is there videos of Super Mario 64DD WITHOUT a cartridge plugged in? The 64DD had load times like a disc, but fast loading times because it's a floppy disk.

Loading times can easily be faked in After Effects, and just because a video shows 'A' Nintendo 64 without a cart in it, doesn't necessarily mean that the shown N64 is the source of the video.

I still have questions about this particular DD Disc, but I am willing to back off of my initial '100% fake' assessment.

Did some more research, and I now have reason to believe that this, in fact, could be real.

While the NUS/NUD thing still bothers me some, and the label is poor, there is proof that an item like this did, in fact, exist, and was truly showcased at Spaceworld 1996.  The fact that the label claims a date of 1997, though, makes me wonder about this particular item.

I can no longer say it is definitely a fake, but I believe that if it is, in fact, a real cartridge, it may be fan-restored...or there are some serious questions about it that cannot be easily answered.

EverDrive 64 / Re: Holy Grail of N64 gaming?

Fake.  ID Code for DD games started with NUD, not NUS.  Label is crap, too.

Don't get me wrong - this is a brilliant fake.  Someone modified the Japanese N64 ROM with extra text, and managed, somehow, to either write the game to a DD disc, or did some editing trickery.

My money is this: it's a relabeled regular game, and the video output on that monitor is playing from a computer, not the N64.  You'll notice that at no point in the video was the controller shown, and neither did the cord ever move an iota.  Also, if he's obviously holding the camera in one hand, how is he jumping?  Using one hand?  I doubt it.

Clever, but unfortunately faked.

this is the rom you need Megaman - The Wily Wars (E) [f3] (SRAM Save by MottZilla).bin its in the goodset
Can somebody link me to this rom? I can't find it anywhere.

Links to ROMs are not now, nor will they ever be, tolerated.  Hardass statement aside, mate, you've got the internet.  Google is your friend - it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'm going to guess that he's playing the fds, but In case he's playing the FDS CONVERSION, then in that case, this is normal. Maybe the firmware of N8+Doki doki panic=FDS conversion?

I'm not at all sure what you're talking about.  Doki Doki Panic (the unaltered ROM, not the Mario 2 stand-in) was only ever released in FDS format, so I'm unclear as to where this 'FDS CONVERSION' comes into play.  The N8 can play FDS roms without the FDS being present - it loads the FDS BIOS and mimics (to lesser or greater degree) the hardware of the FDS.

If you mean something else, please explain more clearly.

Off Topic / Re: Where to get 4GB non SDHC Micro or Mini-SD
« on: September 28, 2014, 02:55 AM »
What makes SD better than SDHC for flash carts?
It's not that they're 'better' per se, it's that the tech made to work with it naturally couldn't anticipate future revisions and specification.  Did you ever add a huge new hard drive to a computer and find out that it wasn't able to access all of the promised storage space due to software limitations?  I remember Windows 98 SE having a...I want to say 64GB limit.  If you tried to use a larger one, it would have problems and either not recognize it, or only use up to what it thought it could.

In a way, it's sort of like that.  Those old SD cards did things differently, used a different technology, and behaved in ways beneath the surface that made technology based around them at the time have problems with the newer iterations.  From not working at all to limited functionality to random erases/rewrites/general bugginess, old tech is made to deal with old tech, and new tech is made to deal with new tech and a side order of the old stuff.

However, new tech eventually drops support for older and older stuff as it's no longer practical, efficient, or worth the time and money to put in the effort to make it work.
