Are you absolutely sure the Zapper you are using is still fully functional?

I downgraded to v16 firmware and in PAL mode on the AVS thats broken too now.
I have the same issue with PAL mode on the AVS. But it doesn't look like something related to the Everdrive OS version. Not directly at least.
Try to downgrade firmware of the console itself to v1.30 beta 5 or below and see if it helps.

Guys at Retrousb have introduced some changes in the firmware v1.30 beta 6 see changelog:
Code: [Select]
1.30b6
   game -> menus gg corruption
PAL vblank flag (rc pro am)
And I believe PAL vblank flag implementation introduced some sort of incompatibility with ED. This affects all v20 pre-releases and at least v13, v15 and v16.

So, I hope, KRIKzz could investigate this issue on his side because it really gives trouble with Everdrive only.
But we should not hijack this thread, dedicated specifically to v20 and move discussion to the more appropriate place.

I'll give it a try and see what does for both v20 and v16 :-) I'm the one that actually reported the rc pro am issue that prompted the fix. I checked at the time when that firmware got released whether this fixed the issue with RC Pro Am in PAL mode when the Everdrive was on v16 firmware and I did not have the menu issue with the everdrive at that time

I downgraded to v16 firmware and in PAL mode on the AVS thats broken too now. I've definitely played PAL stuff on the AVS on v16 before that was just fine..but now it just garbled and locks up sometimes when digging into subfolders.

Tried some PAL carts and they work just fine.

This is what PAL mode looks like now on the AVS on the RC firmware..and now on v16 as well.
Image of it can be seen here: https://densy.stackstorage.com/s/sVlukjDWRiZprIu

Are most people getting the errors using PAL consoles? Something definitely seems to be screwed up with PAL mode on the recent OS.

I hadn’t tested it in PAL mode yet on AVS. I just did and..it’s a mess. The menu is really garbled. Managed to get it looking properly again with a reset but after going through folders a bit it starts to look like mess again.

Whats the SHA1 checksum of the rom that you are using?

Thanks! Looks like we’re using the same rom.

Can confirm the Gimmick bug: crashes on level 2. My game crashed when I got onto the small boat. Trying to see if a thorough reformatting fixes anything!

EDIT:
Formatting and copying all files including firmware over again made no change. I installed RC6 and the game still crashed at level 2. Then I installed RC5 and..the game didn't crash. Something happened in between RC5 to RC6 that made this game crash on the AVS.

What version of Everdrive are you using (FC or NES)? What did you set the volume to? I didn't have this crash issue with Gimmick on RC6 on AVS.

I didn't have a volume issue with AVS with RC6 (probably not on RC7 either, though that locks up with MMC3 with AVS). Akumajou Densetsu sounds excellent at the defaults on AVS for me.

NES version. The AVS is running on version 1.30 final. Volume settings were unchanged on AVS and Everdrive for expansion audio.

Whats the SHA1 checksum of the rom that you are using?

Loving the FDS audio improvements on the latest RC! Tested it for a bit on my AVS and it’s good! Zelda 1 sword blast is exactly the same every time now and sounds consistent with real hardware. The music problems in Bio Miracle are gone now too. Awesome, thanks!

I also noticed that disk error that briefly shows up when saving in Zelda 1 is gone now too.

I tried a few games that before the current firmware were known to not work properly on the N8. I was curious to see if some of those might be fixed now. I didn’t do extensive testing, but so far Gall Force still crashes on the first level, and Ultraman Club gets stuck in a loop when it has to load and switch sides.

Nonetheless, for a lot of games the N8 is now a nice way to experience them :-)

Sorry if this has been covered, but have not seen it.
Setup background: running the famicom version of the N8 on an AVS

With v16 had a lot of seemingly random video noise (random lines, etc) Looking around it seems this is a known issue with AVS. I updated to V20 RC1 to see if this has been cleared up, which it seemingly has, the few games I have tested seem to be free of the aforementioned 'noise' So thanks to Krikzz for all your hard work on that, and everything else you do for the community.

Onto my current issue, when I load any rom (on the initial load) the n8 freezes on the loading screen, with the n8 red access light staying on solid. If I hard reset then hit the 'start' button to load the last rom the game loads fine every time.

Hope this makes sense, if I need more details, etc. please let me know, this behavior never occurred before.

I use an AVS as well. I have not had this problem. I'm running the final 1.30 AVS firmware with the NES version of the N8.

Boss music (this sounds wrong)
FDS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lslo8PewVUg&feature=youtu.be
N8 v20 RC1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3C2mUquL44&feature=youtu.be

I think that MIGHT be  slighly different (bassline, maybe?), but we are definitely way closer to the original than a couple of years ago. I may be lo-fi but I'm content just as it is.

Did you really listen to the audio all the way to the end for the boss music? The difference is very, very big.

I agree with you that it’s an improvement! :) Just hoping providing some feedback helps to make it perfect. If not I’ll stick to an FDSSTICK.

Here's a few comparisons from Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa between original FDS hardware and the Everdrive N8 with v20 RC1 that I made.

1-1 music (this sounds fine to me)

Could be! It was just very noticeable :-)

The intro music sounded fine to me. Moving the selector around when typing in a name for a new save had a little noise thats not there on the real hardware, but thats a lot harder to notice.

Ran into the A/B error too when saving the new game, though it did eventually go through. I don't recall this happening on older pre v20 firmware. It's at least not consistent with original hardware.

Hi! Lovely update. Great to have more mappers supported. And FDS audio has improved quite a bit!

I haven't done extensive testing but there is one thing that stood out to me. The sword blast in Zelda 1 sounds a lot better now, but the sound seems to be inconsistent?

This is what it sounds like on real famicom disk system hardware:

This is what it sounds like on Everdrive N8 with v20 RC1

Off Topic / Re: NTSC sync problems?

A 50/60 modded PAL Mega Drive will not produce a perfect 60hz signal in my experience. Could be that your TV has a problem taking this slightly off spec signal. My modded PAL Mega Drive works fine when connected to the Framemeister but it does take some tweaking to get it to display smoothly without some occasional visual stutter.

I think N64 video quality is something that is very much a personal preference thing. I personally found it hard to justify spending lots of money on an UltraHDMI mod for a console that has quite a limited library of games to explore. But I did end making some improvements to the video quality which are relatively cheap.

I ooked up my PAL N64 again after a long time through my Framemeister. Problem with the PAL N64 in combination with the Framemeister is that the upscaler really doesn't like the output of NTSC games from a PAL unit. Composite video is really messy looking. I ended up getting a Japanese N64 for dirt cheap connected through S-Video into the Framemeister. S-video is a nice jump in quality from composite for the N64. Combined with the deblur patches you can apply to games with the Everdrive 64 you end with a cleaner look. I like it even more if you add scanlines to them.

I find that this solution is perfectly acceptable to my eyes for N64 games.

If you wanna try the deblur patches that disable anti-aliasing for a lot of games, check this site:
