I found an offer for the mega everdrive on Stone Age Gamer but it says it's "only the base version".

Contacted him and copied the contents of the latest version from the website into the sd2snes folder and that fixed it, but Doom's instruments eventually got quiet in the first level. Is that normal?

I got it from intbn in Ireland on ebay. The sticker is the usual one. I should note those are SuperFX 2 games. Regular Super FX games like Star Foz 1 work fine.

I have that firmware but not a pro, which I didn't even know existed. Should the non-pro be compatible with them?

Fixed this by doing a comeplete format of the SD card.

I guess this is an unknown issue?

When I press the reset button and only while a game is open, I get the "OS init" message but then a blank screen instead of my files. Enabling the Reset to Game option functions normally, however. It should be noted that before this, I got stuck on the OS init screen, but that was fixed by formatting the SD card, deleting a stray Soccer ROM in the EDFC folder of my Dropbox backup and copying all the files back over to the card. When I put it back in, this error happened.
Edit: Just reformatted the SD card and I initially got error 63 when trying to enter the EDFC file. Reset it, tried again and it works normally but the restart glitch is still present.
