EverDrive GBA / Cannot get past Game Boy boot screen

Been a while since I've been on here :)

Long story short, I preordered the ED-GBA X5 from SAG back in 2016 and apparently never tested the thing - I think my GBAs were in storage at the time and it just sat on a shelf until recently.

I tried loading up an SD card with the latest OS and my AGS-001 wasn't getting past the Game Boy boot screen. Figured I probably just needed to reinsert it, but that didn't change anything. Tried a game cart in the system and it worked fine. Dug out my old AGB-001 - same thing. Tried it in the Gamecube - same thing. Verified each was working with official carts. As a note, it boots as if no cart is in the slot - without the Nintendo logo. Just once of the many times I've tried to boot it, did it have jumbled blocks where the Nintendo logo would usually be, if that means anything.

Cleaned the contacts and tested running on both portables while plugged in - same thing. Still same with the GC player too. EDIT - found and tested with my micro as well - same thing, not that I was expecting differently...just hoping.

Did some reading - saw the early reports SD card compatibility issues. Went to check the bootloader version by removing the SD card - still the same thing. I'd expect that if it was a card compatibility issue, I could at least see my bootloader version. Since this was a preorder, I suspect the shipped bootloader was one of the first, if not the first, version.

Since I can't even get to that screen, though, does that seem indicative of a larger, potentially hardware, issue? I'm waiting on some new SD cards to get here which I'll test with of course, but it doesn't seem like that will be fruitful from what I'm seeing thus far.

Thoughts?

Been a while since I've been around these parts (hi!) but figured I'd share in case it wasn't too widely known yet. SainT over at AtariAge is working on an SD based NGPC flash solution which will be a welcome addition to the collection. NGPC is easily one of my all time fav handhelds and while the flash carts I have for it are nice, one with an SD slot will be simply awesome I think. One to watch for sure!

Upcoming clone that is said to play Famicom (needs converter for NES), SNES, Genesis, PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color and Supergrafx games. It even lets you download the roms from your carts to a micro SD card. It supports USB controllers which could be a good move.

Neat or no?

Some of you should be familiar with Darksoft's other multi-carts for ST-V and CPS-2. He's taking feedback on what his next project should be (after his DECO multi) and a Neo-Geo flash cart is an option along with Taito F3 and System 246 :)

I'm sure there are threads on all sorts of forums, but here are two for now. Feel free to vote and give him feedback. As a note, he says if he makes a NG multi, he would plan to make it compatible with both MVS and AES. He's also estimating around $300 which is in line with the CPS-2 one.

It's been mentioned a time or two on here I think, but figured I'd start a dedicated thread since it looks like preorders may be starting soon now that the prototype has been revealed and confirms ALL CPS-2 games working :)

If you're not familiar with the CPS-II system, it's Capcom's arcade hardware that ran a lot of your favorite 90's arcade games like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Darkstalkers, X-Men: Children of the Atom, Mega Man: The Power Battle, Marvel vs Capcom, etc. Here's a game list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CP_System_II#List_of_games

So you'll still need an A board to use this but reportedly do not have to irreversibly damage a B board which is nice. It's also my understanding that this can be used with a dead B board, but someone else may need to confirm as I don't recall ALL the details about this project at this point (the thread I linked above should explain it all for those who like to read...a lot...).

Unfortunately, there's no on screen menu selection, but he has made an external display to select the game which is nicer than the dip setting feature of his ST-V multi cart (also an awesome project from last year). I'll probably mount mine behind the coin door until I get a better cabinet I can dedicate to this thing.

One of the big attractions for many is to be able to play Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition finally since those are pretty hard and expensive to come by.

Anyway, it's best to subscribe to his blog linked above for updates and to know when preorders might begin. As far as I know, this is going to be limited run, at least at first, and there's a LOT of people wanted to get on board with this, so you'll probably have to be quick to make sure you grab one.

Off Topic / Harmony Encore cart for Atari VCS/2600

Does anyone here have a Harmony Encore cart yet? They've been doing upgrades for a while but just started selling them on the Harmony store site recently. I've asked a few questions on the Harmony forum at AtariAge but getting a response sometimes is difficult, so I figured I'd check here since I know some of you guys at least have the original Harmony cart.
  • First, if you bought a new Encore cart from the site (in other words, didn't have an existing Harmony cart upgraded to Encore), can you post pictures? I'm curious if it's the exact same as the current Harmony carts or not, mostly in terms of SD slot and USB port locations.
  • Does anyone have the MicroSD version of either cart? Or maybe someone just knows the answer here - is the MicroSD version fully internal or can you access the card from the outside of the cart?
  • Less importantly, does anyone have a good source for 2600 cart cases with insert sleeves? Some games had them back in the day, and I'm thinking of just trying to find one of those on ebay or something, but if there's someone who make custom cases for 2600 carts, that'd be great. I don't really want to mod an existing case if I don't have to and am not interested in using the standard Universal cases unless I have to.

Off Topic / Sorting Roms by Region

Taking a cue from Kyle's thread here, I starting working on a batch file to split a no-intro NES set into folders by region. Right now all it does is split everything based on region exactly as they are specified in the file name. For those that specify multiple regions such as "(Japan, USA)", those will put a copy in both the Japan and USA folders.

Ultimately, my goal was to work towards finding a way to keep one copy of each rom based on preferred regions (meaning, if there's a Japan, a USA, and a Europe version of a single game, I want to keep the USA version and remove the others. If there's only a Japan version, then keep that, etc). I read that this should already be possible using a dat file and ClrMamePro, but I haven't been able to get it to work yet...if anyone can point me in the right direction there, that would be great. If not, then I may continue looking at how to do this with AutoHotKey (which should be easier and possibly faster than creating a batch file). EDIT: I think I figured it out, I just need to play with the settings some and see how best to run through it all. I was using the wrong dat file, basically.

Anyway, for now I figured I'd share this simple batch file that will separate your roms into folders by region, if that's what you want. It can also easily be modified to group some of them together if would prefer (like putting all the smaller regions into one "Other" folder or something if you want). One thing it does not currently do is take the "World" roms and put them into every region folder, though it could be modified to do so pretty easily, if you want. Probably best to have to copy those to Japan, USA, and Europe but not to all the others.

Simply copy the below text into notepad and save with a .bat extension, then run inside your rom folder. As a note, this moves the files, it does not copy, so be sure to make a backup of your set first if you wish. Also, this will work with both uncompressed or compressed roms, so either way you have them setup right now will be fine, so long as you still have the region in the filename. If you'd prefer to have it copy everything instead of move them, once you get this into notepad, just do a find/replace of the word "move" and replace it with "copy". Simple enough.

Anyway, not sure if anyone else will need/want this, but figured I'd share. In theory, this should work for any No-Intro set for any system. The only thing that I can think of that might propose a problem is if other systems have other regions specified that aren't listed here. If so, those would need to be added. The good thing about moving the files instead of copying them is that if something got missed, then those will still be in your original folder and the file could then be easily updated and rerun to catch whatever was missed.

I'm debating if upgrading is worth it but I'm considering it. I guess the final deciding point right now is if a v2 board will fit properly in a NA shell cut for a v1 and if the SD slot has moved at all? If so, will it require the existing slot to be cut a bit larger or moved all together?
