No it didn't interfere with the sound channels, the problem with save states on the SNES using a flashcart is that there is no good way to know the exact state of the APU from the cartridge. So sound will break when making a save state because you can't preserve the sound program's state. In that interview with Smokemonster it sounded like they were going to program an FPGA APU which the game will think is the APU and upload its sound program and sound data to.

It's easy to preserve the state of this FPGA-simulated APU in the save state since it's part of the flashcart's workings. But that also means sound is not playing on your SNES hardware but on an FPGA APU in the SD2SNES. Any homebrew testing or APU comparisons would be useless. That's why it's a bad thing. If it's just an option it's ok though.

I thought that this problem was only with MSU1 - SNES Media Streaming Unit  for the reason you stated, but stock ROMs don't have the problem?

it's interesting how a generally community driven project can be ended by force by the legal system over a few letters if it doesn't abide, almost as if overseas corporations are in charge of the judicial system which coincidentally has way more power than it should

afaik not even the likeness, no matter how clever, if it accomplishes said cognitive function intentional or not, it's infringement, all they have to do is prove the average person will draw the line between the name/logo/etc. and their mark

it's too bad the average person these days don't know what SNES means or what it is, otherwise the average person wouldn't associate and there might be a shot at defending the name, imho and

i would say the trademark is public domain at this point, like q-tips and cleenex

otherwise you have no other way to express the fact that you can plug in your external memory card into something, in a way that is generally identifiable, just as you would have no way to tell someone to purchase some generic cleanex, without sane IP law

can't they just be happy with having an absolute monopoly on the "storage chip" market without going full asshole Disney?  it's not like anyone even remotely affiliated with this project is selling digital storage medium falsely branded with secure digital trademark....  Nobody actually thinks the SD2SNES is an SD card.... I hate IP law sometimes.

It can probably be (is?) used for button overlays for streaming, so the viewer can see what buttons are being pressed synced with the video output of the console.  Another thought is that it can probably be (is?) used for TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrunning) to have an AI provide the button input and/or devise best/novel game"play".  The other two I can think of are mentioned already:  save states and net play.

You could probably have a rPi or something listen for web requests, and a "smart device" make a request to it upon command, and the rPi would control the SD2SNES via USB - you would probably have to leave the SNES powered at all times unless you go further and have the rPi capable of switching power for the SNES, probably need to customise the SD2SNES source code and maybe keep a directory listing copied to the rPi

confirmed, superNT+SD2SNES Pro + latest firmware

without "boot directly to cartridge" enabled in the super NT options the SD2SNES Pro menu appears corrupted and unusable.

I'm not arguing for or against piracy, but I think you're overplaying this sort of honeybadger thing.  It's true that it opens a hole for competition to move in and gain traffic that would have been for the destroyed wares site, but let's not kid ourselves here, all Nintendo has to do is destroy the most effective, highest quality site every few years, and it severely reduces the prevalence and ease of piracy.  Think about it, it takes A LOT of energy to build a site or service and build a good ubiquitous name, it takes YEARS to get the community to instinctively use your thing, then at a whim you, since you succeeded, are utterly legally destroyed with minimal effort by Nintendo or whatever mega corp.  It's extremely effective, and the idea that 5 replacements that are just as useful, comprehensive, and reliable 'just pop up' is disingenuous.  If that were actually true it Nintendo would never do what they do.

If my understanding isn't wrong then by sporting their old IPs they protect them from becoming public domain, not the opposite.  The Disney theory.  As per the other musings, if they truly cared about the customer they would have done it right even if it would have cost them, like give the ability to plug in your old carts and peripherals and true mastery of emulation/synthetics like Analogue achieved.  They want money, long term money, subscriptions, they want publicity, the stunts, the mini/classic, they want IP guarded from becoming public domain, online subs/mini/classic.  They don't care about anything like perfect reproduction/playability or the best titles.  A lot of times either they don't have the ability to, or won't pony up for, the rights to games they used to own rights to, people usually think that it's some limitation of storage, compatibility, or that just stupid choices when obvious major hitters aren't included, but it's probably sometimes a legal and/or cost thing.  They didn't start the classic gaming craze, they just see it as a threat because they were so opaque about it for so long it put them into a weak position.

That's just my take on Nintendo.  Probably true for a lot of companies right now seeing their old IPs getting enjoyed without their business and wondering if they will ever again, or just realizing that they could have or maybe still can, hop on that gravy train.
