News / Re: EDN8 OS v20-BETA. Large update incoming
« on: August 14, 2019, 12:50 AM »
Hopefully the next N8 will also fix the problem with consoles that have a NESRGB installed where sometimes there is speckling all over the picture, requiring a random number of power resets to clear up.

I have an everdrive n8 famicom style, and a rgb modded AV Famicom. And i still have issues with the white artifacts and lines on screen. Especially with Rockman 5 and 3 or Batman Returns.  The everdrive is loaded with OS 20 rc7. But i had this issue before with 16. Is there a way to fix it?

Little bit off topic but I wanted to reply to these comments as I have some experience of this exact issue myself on my RGB modded AV Famicom and it actually has nothing to do with the N8 itself although it does seem to occur when using it.

The issue is fixed by removing a transistor connected to the composite video line which causes interference. As soon it is removed you wont see it again. It has worked for me and others I have suggested the fix to since.

This post explains it well: https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=1297501#p1297501

Have a read of the whole thread if you are interested but essentially it was a ton of troubleshooting all sorts of stuff to just finally realise it was just this silly little transistor.

Hope it helps!

Here is a patch for the Alex Kidd BIOS to make it run as a regular game rom:
http://www.smspower.org/forums/10249-AlexKiddHamburgerHack#46880

And here is a hacked BIOS with the Snail Maze game:
http://www.smspower.org/uploads/Development/BIOS13.zip

Excellent thanks mate. I didn't realize the hamburger for Alex Kidd was only in the BIOS version .... I was wondering about that!

Just out of interest / for nostalgia I have been loading up the master system BIOS files individually to play the built in games (the ones that load up when no cartridge is inserted), however most of the BIOS files load up to a "Software Error" screen however If i load up "[BIOS] Hang-On (USA, Europe) (v3.4)" or "[BIOS] Missile Defense 3-D (USA, Europe) (v4.4)" these load up fine and all the games can be played including Snail Maze (if you hold up + button 1 & 2). The original 1.3 or the Alex Kidd BIOS versions don't want to play ball though.

Would be cool if it was possible to load up the BIOS files and have them all behave like no cartridge is inserted? Not sure what the difference is with the ones that do work.

I know there are other ways to play these games by loading up the roms directly but just curious how this works exactly.

P.S. I have the SMS BIOS option set to off in the config options otherwise this will not work at all.

Also I recently RGB modified an AV Famicom for a friend and loaded up Mega Man 3 US and noticed some graphical issues e.g. the flickery line on the stage select screen was bigger and down the bottom not the middle of the screen and when pausing in game the menu was transparent and unuseable. I hadn't seen this on mine before , however after some messing about I realised that when it happens if I power cycle the console and load it again they disappear and it's back to normal, must be an odd timing thing.

Thought I would just shoot a quick demo of this issue - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MZYdSCy5BU

Fixed after a few power cycles - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FowDIm6taUY

Never noticed this on my own AV Famicom and have loaded this game quite a lot. My friends AV Famicom (the one in the video) is a slightly newer main board revision and has a later revision of the NESRGB board as well but doubt it is related to the RGB board.

Weird!

I have also managed to sort my SD card issues on v20 (on the AV Famicom not the PAL NES) by using an old 2GB SD card... random IO errors have not returned since using this card!

It has been said a million times in this thread to not use RC7 because it has wrong MMC3 tuning.
Use RC6.

Why does KRIKzz keep this RC7 on the first page?

No idea but the issue I mentioned was with RC6 not RC7!

Try Mega man 3 and 4. 3 randomly freezes and 4 has graphical issues like with the hippo in ring man's stage.
I've got a physical copy of Rockman 4, so I've compared it against Mega Man 4 ran on EDN8 via the adapter.

Ring Man stage in Rockman 4 (real cartridge, AV Famicom):
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/405382805?t=00h14m20s

Ring Man stage in Mega Man 4 (EDN8 v20 + adapter, PAL NES):
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/406892556

Looks alright to me :) (and before you ask, it works the same with the EDN8 on AV Famicom and US/JP ROM)

Out of curiosity what version of v20 was that running ?

Also I recently RGB modified an AV Famicom for a friend and loaded up Mega Man 3 US and noticed some graphical issues e.g. the flickery line on the stage select screen was bigger and down the bottom not the middle of the screen and when pausing in game the menu was transparent and unuseable. Flex, did you get your system mailed off? I'm on v14 or v15 I think, so I haven't messed around with anything new, I just really enjoy when problems are figures out and fixed!

Great of you to do this, maybe I need to do it with my TG16 and Everdrive for that, it's never worked...

On hold at the moment, I sent some videos of my issues to Krikzz and he said not to worry as he thinks it may be something to do with the Hyperkin 60 - 72 pin adapter I am using in my PAL NES as I have the N8 Famicom version so I can use it in my AV Famicom and the PAL NES with the adapter, he is going to source one of these himself first. If I'm honest though I am slightly skeptical as the adapter works with no issues on OS v16 unless something changed in the code causing the hang with the adapter, also I still get intermittent IO issues on the AV Fami where there is no adapter in use.

However no one is going to know better than the man himself so who am I to question! lol. Fingers crossed!

I still have the console and everything here ready to post if necessary.

If I can help in anyway e.g. post my Everdrive and console with the issue to you I would be more than happy to do so! Just let me know.

This would be really helpful. I think i will solve the problem if you can send full kit (cart + console + sd card)

We could chip in for the shipping if you do go through with this. It would help a lot a lot of peoples.

Yep I will be shipping it all out in the next few days, was working away last week so didnt get a chance.

I am estimating shipping from the UK will be about £17 if I can keep the parcel size down otherwise it going to ba a lot more! I will post a picture of the receipt with the final cost once posted.

If you are feeling generous and want to chip in you can send me some funds via paypal via paypal.me/djflex but you may want to wait until I post the receipt. I don't mind either way.

I'm curious about the people having issues here.
Did you buy your SD cards bundled with your Everdrives or did you use one from a different place

Using my own SD Cards here, mainly using a SanDisk Ultra 16GB microSDHC (A1 Performance). This one here and I always do a clean format FAT32 with 32kb file allocation when changing OS.

However I can replicate the issues with pretty much any SD card and the issues disappear as soon as I downgrade to OS v16 so really don't think this is a case of dodgy SD cards or anything.

Not to say something controversial, but I think krikzz's priority is to SELL his products,, he's not even posting on the forum anymore,, it's all on twitter.
The usual support here is "try a different sd card" is completely unacceptable for 100-200$ products.

Not acceptable? I wonder, what exactly you expecting for? When you buy some apple gadget, for 1000$ as example, can you take some direct feedback from the engineers who working over device development? In best case you will take few completely useless tips from guy in call center. You talking about 100-200$ product like about very limited exclusive car for 10 000 000$. This is not working that way.
I do what i can, but i not an god. i physically can not sit here and give the tips how to copy files on sd card and work over development at same time. So, time to time i here, but rest of time i working over hardware and my scoliosis. Back in 2010 i always been ready to response because i had only one cart and few customers, now i should support much more people and devices, but i still have only one head and two hands.

Speeches about rejecting old product for sell new ones is completely nonsense, i did NEVER get any sales boosts after releasing some updated versions of products, such releases always stays invisible in sales diagrams, only completely new product, which did not been in everdrive range before, gives sales boosts. Well, may be sd2snes pro is the only exception, but hype ends pretty fast anyway.
I making new products because my perfectionism want it, and they  usually not supported with old because i do not want be limited by legacy designs which were made when i been less skilled than now.
From commercial point of view there is no any sense to replace old version of products, especially if they do not have competitors. It waste of time to make new version if current version sells good already, but i do this anyway. For good commercial results i shouldn't release any update version of devices which already exist, only completely new devices should be in priority. Also, even if i forced to update something due outdated parts, i rather would stay all on old software to save the time, if my focus would be commercial profit only, but perfectionism force me to made all from the scratch and drop compatibility with old devices.
Oh, and what about sd2snes, profit guy probably would drain old stock before release new sd2snes-pro, but instead i released it before and start sales once pro was ready, old version now on sale with large discount and i still have lot of unsold, who knows how many time need to sell them now.
So, please, not make me again listen stories about changing device hardware to make more money.

As for v20, well, i really don't know why it not working for some of us, it work on all my test carts and all my systems. I do not know how to fix the problem if i can't see the problem. But what if i would not made v20 at all? N8 still be best in terms of mappers support and features, all would be happy with v16 or some v17 with minor updates. But i tried to made huge jump for N8, spent incredible amount of time for all those mappers and fds sound and what i have after all? Only complaints? I must say this is dissapoint and demotivate me.

I want to say once again that when you buy the product, you guaranted will take the item with specification listed on the product page on the moment when you buy it, nothing else. Don't blame me that you  did not get enough updates, i did not promised anything except what i already have.

Hey Krikzz.... please do not let a few idots comments demotivate you. There are many of us who are extremely pleased with your amazing work and realise the time and dedication that goes into it!

I cannot even begin to understand what it must be like supporting all of these products etc!

Regarding v20 it is an amazing update... and I love playing games with that sweet FDS sound (which sounds pretty much perfect btw!).

That being said I do personally have an issue with the SD card read timing on my AV Famicom on v20 but not v16 but it is just an annoyance more than anything as I can work around it, on my PAL system v16 works perfect but on v20 cannot get past OS init... message but again if I want to use it i just downgrade to v16, not the end of the world!

I am hoping you are able to finish v20 and get it out of the beta stage as it would be a real shame to come all this way and to not get it perfect... I am a bit of a perfectionist like yourself so I relate to what you are saying! If I can help in anyway e.g. post my Everdrive and console with the issue to you I would be more than happy to do so! Just let me know.

SD2SNES / Re: MSU-1 Audio Levels (upgraded SD2NES Revision H)
« on: February 18, 2019, 06:28 AM »
If you turn the boost off it fixes everything. Using the boost just makes the Audio Levels go way over the Sound Effects as I learnt on Castlevania Dracula X's MSU-1 hack.

As previously stated the volume boost was already disabled.

I had some old MSU-1 hacks on my SD card now I that have updated these from the links provided above the levels are all perfect. I believe these older hacks worked well with the Rev. F board which doesn't have the correct volume output, now I am on the Rev. H board i just needed the updated the MSU-1 hacks which have been adjusted correctly and all is good!  8)

You'd be better off going to the release articles themselves to ensure you have the latest versions of the music packs. The thread that was linked earlier hasn't been updated since May of last year.

Or if a game I contributed to is one you're looking for, use the link in my signature.

Awesome! Exactly what i was after. Thanks.

You can grab the fixed music files (volume fixed for rev.H) here:
https://www.zeldix.net/t1339-msu-1-volume-fix-the-second-wave
Hope it helps.

Awesome thanks! Will try these out.

If you turn the boost off it fixes everything. Using the boost just makes the Audio Levels go way over the Sound Effects as I learnt on Castlevania Dracula X's MSU-1 hack.

Boost is already turned off as not needed on the Revision H.. this is more to do with the volume level of the MSU-1 files themselves that were made for the earlier revision I guess.

SD2SNES / MSU-1 Audio Levels (upgraded SD2NES Revision H)
« on: February 15, 2019, 03:15 AM »
Hi Guys,

I successfully fitted the upgrade board to my SD2NSES (Revision F to Revision H) and everything has worked great.

However I have some older MSU-1 patched games e.g. Street Fighter II Turbo (CPS2 Arcade) where the sound of the music is much louder than the sound effects, I am guessing this was done due to the older revision having the volume issue so the MSU audio has been amped up to compensate.

Is there anyway I can reduce the music volume down for these games that have this issue?

In all 1.8.0 builds SD2SNES SuperCIC is broken is for PAL SNES is fixed in official 1.9.0
did you try boot Street Fighter Zero 2 to see also boot black screen?

Yeah that works fine as well... everything works sweet in that department on 1.8 though as it switches to 50hz if i load a PAL game etc automatically and never had anything refuse to load or complain.

Please, remember that this is a leaked firmware.

I had many of issues you're talking about and they are fixed now in the last test firmware that I have (1.10.1 beta).

Just wait...

Awesome that is good to know :D Like i mentioned in my earlier reply I appreciate this isn't actually officially released yet and how much effort goes into this stuff and I for one am very grateful for it! Especially when really we are talking about an additional 2 games being supported so no rush really!

Also on the Rev F thing.... I see some comments in another thread about the Rev F board so I ran the diagnostics firmware on mine and this all came back as passed!
