News / Re: EDN8 OS v20-BETA. Large update incoming
« on: June 03, 2018, 08:36 AM »
I want to know WHEN famicom users will be able again to use exp sound games at an acceptable volume, only 1 mapper have the boosted sound now, castlevania3, but other 2 not and can't play like that, just hope that not need months or years to get this update

You do know you can go back to v16 and custom mappers anytime right?

This is a beta and as any beta not production ready, krikzz takes feedback seriously as he always has, hence why it has not released yet a final v20.
With regard to when would that happen? Well not before krikzz determines to have fixed the most pressing issues (the crashes, the garbled gfx etc...). For the volume thing I am not sure what he will decide to do, he has not said and there's no hurry either given there's other stuff as well anyway.

Again we should be thankful that Kirkzz released the betas so we could test, but given it is not ready for now just go back to v16 and the custom mappers that were also volume tweaked for the various famicom, using bold won't make v20 come out any time sooner.

EverDrive 64 / Re: pokemon stadium 2 - ed64 v2.0/v2.5 issue
« on: June 01, 2018, 08:32 AM »
has anyone tried this possible fix method yet?

I took a quick look with HxD and the ROM dump in SM pack does not have trailing 256KB or even 128KB of 0xFF to be truncated.
The ROM ending starts having bytes 0xFF at 0x3FEC850 all the way to 0x3FFFFFF or 79792 bytes, so not sure what would be lopped off if more than that is removed.
There's another big chunk of 0xFF from 0x3FD1B30  to 0x3FD4FF0 but it may be coincidental.
So told it is possible that the dump contains someone's save at the time of dump so ....

Mega EverDrive / MegaED x3, no HW MegaKey?
« on: May 23, 2018, 08:49 AM »
What does it mean?
Can it still run different region games but with less compatibility or it can only run same region games?
(same region as in same region as the console)

If it is the 1st, still run bit less compat, has anyone a list of what doesn't work?

I managed to buy 3 or 4 basic cart versions (no special paint or anything) from SAG and I was very happy and paid the same (shipping was a little lower) or less (for a while it had a surplus of MegaED v2 that costed like 20US$ less than the X7 from Krikzz store, and given v2->X7 is only a firmware update away I saved a bunch, on top of that I did it during Black Friday, although SAG discounts are not as deep as Krikzz I still came up on top). Usually shipping is pretty quick if they have the item on hand. Only once I had to wait for the EDGBAx5 as I got it in preorder ... I was happy with the wait as I knew about it beforehand.

Also SAG takes Paypal and does not require an account at all (anonymous checkout all the way with tracking) I have to say I am fine doing business with them.
I got from SAG my EDGBAx5, EDGBv1 and EDGBx3 as well as the named MegaED X7 (aka V2). I repeat this were the basic version with simple cart/no special anything ('cause I'm cheap).

I did buy from Krikzz store early on: ED64v2, MegaEDv1, MasterED, TurbeEDv1, TurboEDv2, SD2SNES, EDN8 (famicom version), I believe at the time Krikzz store did use Paypal (can't remember as it was before the redesign when the forums were mostly on Assembler games and the sotre did not ship to Germany [not that I cared, just found it funny])

EDIT: at present when you buy most of the Everdrive carts from SAG you get a bundle of games from PikoInteractive, it seems the deal is on for EDGB/GBA/N8/MegaED/SuperED/SD2SNES (the N8/SNES/Genny seems to get around 17/18 games).
Note that Piko buys IP of old unfinished/unreleased games, completes them and sells them, so those are "new" games in a manner of speaking.

OK, maybe an OS RBF with a decent level for AV Famicom and one for normal Famicom (I don't know if it is HI/LO or HI/HI++ or whatever is needed)
Krikzz has answered that question on page 12:
Quote from: Krikzz
I for sure will not make multiple rbf files, what i planning, it make menu where user will be able to tune audio balance for each mapper according to his preference. But it will be for next release

I'm pretty sure he meant the games mapper as there's more than one, but I believe the OS is either 1 file or 1 file + mapper 255, either way if he can release the OS in 2 flavors (one as it is now and one with higher volume mixing [if possible]) less people will have issues of the mixing being too  quiet/loud as it may be [even if one may have to use v1 with one mapper and v2 with another].
As a side effect if krikzz does it we can binary compare the 2 versions and maybe find the byte that could be changed to generate other variants ourselves via hex editor (this assuming the difference in volume mixing is coded on the OS as a single byte that can be modified without ill effects ... it may just not be possible).

Anyhow let's see what he comes up with, according to many report the current situation just does not satisfy many users.

Any chance to have then 2 OS (is it rbf 255?) one with HI and one with LO fixed audio mixing?
Why do you want LO setting? It is much quieter than HI, and HI is the fixed and non-changeable value ever since v14.
Besides, VRC6, VRC7, and 5B where tuned on HI (non-changeable default) on a AV Famicom.

Wrt custom mappers I believe one can always edit maprout.bin and point whatever mapper you want to whatever file you want.
Dropping the RBF in the directory only worked becasde the maprout.bin at position 24  (Hex 18) stated 24  (Hex 18) now in v20 it points to 21 [Hex 15].
So you should be able to edit maprout.bin with say HxD and change byte at Hex location 18 from Hex value 15 to Hex value 18 and it should start picking up your custom mapper24 .... so told it is possible that krikzz changed enough of the OS/FW that old mappers have to be rebuilt anyway but it is worth a try. Let us know if it works btw.

EDIT: the maprout.bin file changed a lot in v20, I guess features have been moved around and actual rbf files consolidated more than one would expect.

EverDrive N8 / Re: Can Someone make these 2 Mappers Supported?
« on: April 26, 2018, 06:59 AM »
228 is not possible as it supports up to 1536 KB of CHR while ED N8 max CHR is 512KB.
Wrt mapper 30 look here https://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=7231.0

FXPAK (SD2SNES) / Re: gsu (superfx) support [work in progress]

Wrt SuperFX this is a comment from Byuu about what it does and why it uses so much dithering (the checkered pattern).

"....And then you have the SuperFX, used in about 10 games total, which was a fancy 1D (yes, 1D), one or two color (two color was dithering, alternate each pixel's output color) pixel plotter. The part that made it so grand was that you could work linearly instead of on bitplanes."

If anyone is interested in an overview of the Super FX:

EDIT: btw thank you redguy, now I can finally put my curiosity about those "other" Super FX games to rest.

Mega EverDrive / Re: Mega Everdrive X5 - 32X question
« on: March 26, 2018, 09:17 AM »
1) To play 32X games, I must have the add on? Because the N64 Everdrive plays 64DD roms without the add on.

2) For SEGA CD games I must own the add on anyway right?

1) yes
2) yes

EverDrive GG / Re: Cannot have Asterix working
« on: March 23, 2018, 09:48 PM »
On a windows machine:

at a CMD prompt wherever you have your asterix.sms 512K ROM file (I assume your rom file is asterix.sms adapt based on the actual file name)

C:> copy /b asterix.sms + asterix.sms asterix(fixed).sms

you may need to add quotes if your asterix rom file has a space in the name, the command above is just an example if your file is not called asterix.sms you need to adapt it to your file name.
The end result is a new file called asterix(fixed).sms that is the back to back copy of the asterix original rom twice, that is the one you have to use to play (at least on the MasterED, likely the same for the GG).

If you don't know what a CMD prompt is or you don't have a windows machine you can use Unix at a bash prompt:

cat asterix.sms asterix.sms > asterix(fixed).sms

if you don't know how to use bash you may need to ask someone else to do it for you.

BTW the smokemonster rom pack contains the fixed versions already

EverDrive GG / Re: Cannot have Asterix working

If memory serves you have to create a new file copying the Asterix ROM twice back to back (from 512KB to 1024KB)
it has to do with some missed pieces of emulation of the Sega mapper that Asterix uses.

FXPAK (SD2SNES) / Re: Analogue Super NT
« on: March 09, 2018, 03:36 AM »
I wonder if the SuperNt actually can give SD2SNES the correct info ...... maybe it's expecting the other way around (that is the cart is sending down something that it can detect to adapt itself to whatever the cart wants .... a sort of challenge/response database).

But maybe it is something totally different .... if the OP has a real SNES I suggest doing the reset there the first time then move it to the SuperNt to see if it works that way.
