Turbo EverDrive / Re: Populous HuCard ROM problem with TurboED?
« on: February 04, 2013, 02:43 AM »
It seems like the problem is not a bad image after all.

Same SD card on exact same TurboED  on my DuoR Populous works just fine, but on SuperGrafx it doesn't work (in either PCE or SGX mode): on DuoR there's a music at the title screen instead on the SuperGrafx there's silence, then it locks on trying to play, the UI comes up then it stretches a little bit and everything is locked.
I do not have the original HuCard to try but this may be one game that is incompat with SuperGrafx (or TurboED on SuperGrafx, although I doubt the TurboED has anything to do with it).

Anyway given I have both consoles now I know which one to use to play Populous.

You're thinking of save RAM. Populous uses attached devices (CD-ROM, TurboBooster, etc) to save. I played it on the Turbo ED and it created a save file on my CD unit. But the real HuCard itself has some extra hardware (NOT FOR SAVING YOUR GAME) and I probably didn't play it for long enough for it to be a problem. You won't be able to find a perfectly working copy of the game without getting the real thing.

Then I guess I have a bad rom, because on my TurboED I cannot even go past the title screen.

It is normally easy to mod for EUR as long as the mod is based on RGB (so the console must support RGB out somewhere and the TG16 has the signals available inernally and on the exp connector in a consumable form)
For RGB mod there really is no PAL vs NTSC as much as there is about 50hz vs 60hz and amount of info contained (NTSC based system only generate info for about 400 lines vs PAL 512).
The bands you are seeing are probably due to the missing info.

The PAL/NTSC difference is also about color encoding in composite/Svideo, different colr subcarrier and slightly different color info. RGB does not have such differences and as long as the TV/monitor can latch on the frequence it will display an image. But it may not comply to the expected std.
As already stated for PAL monitors there are 512 lines for NTSC monitors only about 400 so there are 112 line missing (the black bands at the top and bottom) because the original system didn't generate those line at all (in your case the tubro grafx).

Old monitors (like the 1084 from Commodore) had a control on the back that allow to stretch the image vertically to make it fit the whole screen, I doubt modern TV allow you that but you never know. Some TV have that "autofit" feature that may stretch the immage to use all of the real estate and thus mitigating the bars but it may not work as expected.

I played it for a few minutes but became disinterested in it because everything was in Japanese. This is really the only game that may cause issues because it uses extra hardware on the HuCard itself. I think it's a bit of extra RAM. Not backup RAM, just work RAM.

Did you managed to play the ROM on TurboED or are you talking about the original HuCard?
BTW even the original HuCard may not have RAM at all, there are versions of the game that rely on the Tennokoe2 or CD-ROM ram if prseent, otherwise saving is password based.

In any case I wanted to test the Tennokoe2 itself and knew that Populous would use it, then I found I couldn't run it from TurboED and asked the question. Maybe it is indeed incompat, just wanted to make sure I wasn't wrestling with a bad image.
Luckily I found other HuCard based games that support saving (on either an attached CD-ROM/SuperCD-ROM unit or the Tennokoe2).

So my qyestion was really only about to know if Populous (HuCard) works or not on TurboED. If it doesn't it may well be the only HuCard game that doesn't work on TurboED.

Turbo EverDrive / Populous HuCard ROM problem with TurboED?
« on: February 01, 2013, 08:11 AM »
I just recently got a Tennokoe2  for my SGXX so I can save in the few HuCard games that allow it but I am having problem with Populous.
The game, with or without the Tennokoe 2 does not work properly.

What I get is the title screen but the tutorial locks up and the main campaign is all garbled up.
(ironically the save file is created correctly on the Tennokoe2, I can see the list of files thru the "Tennokoe data bank" menu ROM [just press SELECT and it let you chose the PCE or 1 of the 4 slots the real "Tennokoe data bank" has, of course the 4 banks don't work but the PCE content are listed, in my case the PCE content come from the Tennokoe 2] .... funny how the pair works together).

I tried "D&D Order of the ...." HuCard ROM and that one saves and load just fine on the Tennokoe 2 so it is not that piece of hardware the problem.

2 possibilities, bad Rom or populous requires a different mapper.

Anyone managed to make the Populous ROM to work?

Some photos of final board revicion:

You definitely use many more components than any other ED, I guess separating CHR and PRG mem makes the whole project easier to work with, but it is a lot of chips in there.

Regarding Audio I just hope that it sounds right and not distorted, luckily you can change the sound functionality in the FPGA later if needed. It is nice though to have 2 audio levels to play with from the start.

What is the compatibility so far? It would be nice to have a graphic spreadsheet (like PowerPak) of mappers that work, not work, work in progress etc... but you're busy so it can wait until you launch the product.

BTW I noriced you used a 1.2V voltage regulator, for my own education what part of the circuit uses 1.2V in a famicom?

Turbo EverDrive / Re: ROMS - ALDYNE??

The answer is NO!!!. :o

Of the 7 games for SGX only 2 worked in PCE mode (Darius+ and Darius Alpha) the other 5 are SGX exclusive,
which means they only work on SGX.

Would one of those NES to Famicom adapter (the one from Gyromite for example) allow the use of a FamicomED on a NES?

If so rather than different boards/PCB wouldn't invest in making those adapters be a better choice? You make the board once and then people that need an adapter would buy it as an add on ;-)

Make sure your SGX also is set in SGX mode and not in PCE mode.
There's a switch for that at the back of the SGX unit.
It was used to disable via harwdare the extra chips for those few PCE games that would not work on the SGX in order to obtain 100% back compat.

I can assure you all SGX games work fine of TurboED, all of them none excluded!!!

Awesome progresses.
Do you have any release date in mind?

I purchased a Twin Famicom and just waiting for your Everdrive.

Hi Krikzz,

do you think you can officially release OSv6 (os-jap-tst)  or do you need more testing?

I went with the Exp13 -> B10 hardware fix so now my JAP SMS really believes that the Exp slot is cart. I tested all the roms I could find and only found issues with FM incompat or couple of PAL only, and for those with issues I tried on US SMS OSv5 and have the same result.
What i mean is that I believe the fix for port 13h and mem C0000h that you did for OSv6 is the right thing. All my tests seems to confirm that nothing was broken ;-).

Just want to make sure all users can simply download from the OS support page rather than from a temporary link. And maybe we should add on the product page how to use it on a JAP SMS (with GenderAdapter and for better compat hardware fix)

Once more thank you for keeping up a good product.
