FM/English on Wonder Boy II: Monster Land
« on: January 06, 2014, 01:19 AM »
I've been playing on the Master Everdrive on my Japanese Master System....

Is there a way to get FM sound with English text on Wonder Boy in Monster Land in this set-up? I even downloaded and applied the IPS patch for Spanish language that's out there, since its better than Japanese to me, but even that still displayed Japanese text after the Spanish credit screen.

Thanks

try this, it's the UE rom with a patch that has FM always ON. It works great for my pal sms1 and SMSFM

Thanks for the reply, but I'm referring to the previous game in the series.

Try this. It should force the region to Export (US/EU).

Thanks, that patch worked...

You don't have any insight into patches for some other "FM-capable" games that don't open when run normally on the Japanese system (Scrambe Spirits, Rastan, Time Soldiers), do you?

What is wrong with them exactly? I don't have my SMS set up and they all work in emulation (apart from Scramble Spirits showing Japanese text). I made up region patches for them in case that helps.

For me, those 3 just open to a black screen on a Japanese MS via their cartridges or via Everdrive.

I tried the patches, and they did not help this problem.  Thanks

I'm assuming you have the Everdrive connected to the expansion slot? Could you see if these work? These games write to the memory control register and activate the cartridge slot (and deactivate the expansion slot). I changed the writes to activate the expansion slot instead. These should fix the problem.
I forced the region on Time Soldiers to US as well so it would show English text.

Note these will now only work when run from the expansion slot.

Thanks those all work great now in the expansion port. I did post a message saying my FM sound quest was over with those fixes, but there were 2 others that I assume are the same issue  (must run through expansion port)

They are:

Out Run
Lord of the Sword

If there is a similar patch for those, that would be great. Otherwise, thanks for all the work.

Or if it's easy to make this patch on ROMs (force to run in expansion port), let me know how. That would work too. Thanks

The register for selecting card slot, cartridge or expansion is at 0x3e. I opened up the roms in MESS with the debugger running and set a watchpoint at 3e. The bios will write to the port a few times to detect what slot the game is plugged in at. After that the game will write to the register one or more times with a value of 0xA# (cartridge slot active). I went to the rom offset indicated in the debugger and changed the value(s) to 0x6# (expansion slot active).

Here are the patches for Outrun and Lord of the Sword. Please check and see if they work. Thanks for asking for them. It was fun figuring out.

Thanks, those both worked. Out Run, I had to get the specific ROM called Out Run (world) before your patch worked, but it's all good now.  Now I can run every game that came with FM properly on the Everdrive.

There are other games that don't open, but I believe those are issues with any NTSC master system, not just an expansion port issue.        California Games II comes to mind.

Thanks again

This is awesome. So what all is required for this setup? A Japanese master system and an expansion port adapter? Is there one that works better than others?
