Will Famicom ROMs work on an NES ver ED or will I need to buy a Famicom ver ED?

I mainly want to be able to finally play Final Fantasy III (translation patched) without emulation. Will I have to get the Famicom version of the Everdrive with the Famicom to NES converter, or can I just play Famicom ROMs on an NES version Everdrive?

Also, is there any way to play the Japanese version of Castlevania III on an Everdrive, to experience the upgraded music? (the J version used the Famicom Disk System) Is this what the features list as "expansion sound" (where you have to modify an NES to do it)? If so, how do I go about modifying my NES to support CVIII's expansion music?

The NES everdrive is identical to the Famicom everdrive except for the pins, so yes you just need an NTSC NES or Famicom to play NTSC roms correctly.

Yes if you use a NES you need to mod it for FDS games and games like Akumajou Densetsu (it is cartridge not FDS) that has expansion sound or it will sound strange. Search for how to mod it or buy an ENIO.

Ah okay, for some reason i thought the FDS was what added the expansion sound, maybe I read it somewhere not sure. So maybe based on that I just assumed Akumajou Densetsu was an FDS game.

But that guide only covers Famicom/Converter pin relaying. Since I'm not using a Converter and just playing Japanese games on the Everdrive, does that mean I can just join pin 3 and pin 40 inside the NES expansion slot without needing to join any pins on the cartridge? Does the Everdrive take care of the Famicom-to-NES conversion that joining Famicom pin 46 to NES pin 18 normally would?

FDS RAM adapter as well as some cartridges has an extra sound chip on the board.

I can't help you with what pins but the Everdrive N8 shouldn't need any modifications. What do you mean Famicom-to-NES conversion? The N8 doesn't do anything but emulating the extra sound and connects it to 2 of the pins on the cart, you still need to mod the NES or get an ENIO to hear it. Try searching this forum, I know there was a thread about this.

This converter uses stun circuit instead of cic chip, stun circuit shutdown everdrive electronics together with nes security electronics. If you want to use N8-fami with NES, you should use original gyromite adapter, or my adapter: http://shop.retrogate.com/Famicom-To-NES-adapter-FTNES.htm

Just so you know, the translation by ad0220 will not work, EDN8 doesn't support the mapper. The other translation seems to work fine, though.

You mean pin conversion. Yes the NES version of N8 is made for NES so there shouldn't be any problems. There's no difference between different region roms except that PAL roms may be optimised for PAL NES, but they still work on NTSC Famicom or NES although sometimes glitchy.

Pin 45 and 46 on Famicom cartridges is used for extra sound. I don't know about NES carts but there should be pins for that too.
