SRAM AUTO BACKUP...What does this do exactly?
« on: April 23, 2014, 08:00 PM »
Hi all,
I am probably gonna get put through the ringer for asking this question, but...What does the SRAM AUTO BACKUP to the SD Card do exactly? Like when I browsed my SD card, I see a folder in the EDGB folder that says saves, but as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to be saving any of my games exactly. Like in theory are these "saves" supposed to be like "save states" so that I can continue exactly where I left off at if I turn off a game and don't load another game into memory.
Like I said I am sorry for the dumb question, just not sure how this worked exactly.
Also if this is like a "save state" type thing, is there any button I need to press or what not to "save" stuff?

Thanks,
BaNd1t

PS Thanks again Krikzz for quite possibly(EverDrive N8 is kinda tied with it for me imho)THE BEST EVERDRIVE ON THE MARKET!!!!

afaik emulators (and everdrives) will create a .srm or .sav file even if you didnt actually get to a save point (the ed64 is another example). If you actually did save your game, it should however be perfectly fine.

The save dir is for games that have SRAM saves. The EDGB creates a savefile when you have played a game that has SRAM saves and loads another game. It then load the savefile when you get back to your first game again.

Is there a way to use a .sav savegame file (read from original Zelda game using GB XChanger+DGBMax)
for the Everdrive GB? Is it possible to convert it to a usable .srm file for the EDGB?

Thanks for tipps

Ive dumped gb gamesaves that are .srm and used them on visual boy advance via changing the name to .sav. Can only imagine that you can do the opposite by renaming the .sav file to whatever the EDGB's save files are named as.

Already tried that, it didnt work. Plus, all the srm files on the EDGB SD card are 32kB in size.
The savegame from the Zelda cart is 8kB...

Sorry, I couldnt seem to find a converter (maybe only exist with sg games) to convert the saves from 32k to 8k. Interested myself cause I just ordered a EDGB and would love to use my own dumped saves using Saturnu's transfer pak method. I will keep my eyes open for one just in case, until then it might be possible to compare the data of a native 8k save vs the EDGB save to see if their is any filler or dummy data that can be removed to reduce the size.

just merge 4x copy of 8Kb file in single 32k file. Can be done in any hex editor. Actually 8kb file should work as is, but i did not check it

That is easy in command line. Open notepad and paste this:

copy /b %1+%1+%1+%1 32kb.sav

File, save as, 32kb.bat (change save as to all files)

Drag your file on to 32kb.bat. It will copy it 4 times to a file called 32kb.sav.

Thanks Kyle! Cant wait to try my saves on the EDGB. How about vice versa? Is it possible to make the size from 32kb to 8kb to be able to upload EDGB saves to retail carts? I know it is not as important and you would have to own means of uploading the save, but it would make gameboy saves and EDGB saves completely compatible.

Test it out and let me know. If that works I'll put together a little application to do both.

Awsome sauce Kyle! Thanks for all of that work! Now im getting insomnia waiting for the EDGB to arrive  :o! Would it be easier to change the .bak file to convert the .srm saves since the EDGB used .srm?
