I think he's implying that the batteries are fresh since they were just replaced.

I'd make sure they're "good" batteries - not all batteries are created equal :) Make sure they're fresh Duracell or Energizer, none of that off brand stuff.

I've got to say, that I JUST (almost literally) tried this on my gameboy pocket and it DID NOT work with FRESH ALKALINE batteries.  Gameboy Pocket in question is VERY LIGHTLY used, as in more or less mint condition, and works absolutely peachily with all of my real carts.

Works GREAT on my gbc.

i.e. my guess is that whatever corners Nintendo cut to get to 2 AAA for power just isn't enough for pocket + everdrive.

nope doesnae workies.  Just tried with a different set(2017 exp date PANASONIC) of alkalines and watched contrast drop while doing NOTHING.  Highlighting did NOT work at ALL in game selection, reset after contrast faded to nil.

Sad, but it appears that with basic standard alkalines(or even worse lower voltage rechargeables that the EVGB is NOT going to work on the pocket).

I'd REALLY be interested in finding these supposed 1.6V NiMH rechargeables to try out, as beyond color games I'd REALLY PREFER the pocket.

[EDIT]
Beyond the power problems with the EDGB, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread for the gb IMNHO...
[/EDIT]

[EDIT2]
PANASONIC batt packaging states that they are C-Zn
[/EDIT2]

[EDIT3]
Works in the original GBC(sucky non-backlit SUPER DARK screen version) with just two AA Panasonics...

If I had to guess, I'd say that nintendo cut the gbp back to too close to marginal power reqs for something like the EDGB to work w/o something better...

I'd still REALLY like to see those rechargeables that max at more than c. 1.25V
[/EDIT3]

[EDIT4]
...almost forgot... it looks like on gba that it takes advantage of the gba as the selector highlighting is GREEN v. what looks "black" on my gbc and unless it's my imagination is using a higher res selector screen, i.e. all of the gba screen rather than the cutoff part of the screen that gba usually uses for gb/c games, but I never used the gba much until I got a ds lite as the non-backlit screen was the most egregious design flaw that I'd EVER encountered in my life as the thing was entirely unuseable in all but incredibly brightly lit areas, and I won't go on about all the external lighting options that I tried... i.e. my GBA's even more mint than my gbp other than I didn't even bother boxing it and it got real dusty over the years between trials... (check if it spontaneously committed sepuku...
[/EDIT4]

[EDIT5]
Just for completeness the EVGB is v1.2, gameboy pocket is MGB-001 model. MG105728083 serial #, Made in *SIGH* China.

GBC is made in Japan, CGB-001, and GBA is made in *shudder* China AGB-001

I bought these batteries, 1.6v work perfectly with my Gameboy pockets. Mine have also been backlit modded, no problems. Normal 1.2v rechargeables just will not work with pocket and Everdrive GB, too much power needed.

Just found these online. If they do what they claim they can do it should hopefully fix the power problems. Unlike other Lipol batteries these are capped at 1.5v. Ive  just ordered some. So Ill let you know if they work.
Fingers crossed.

I wanted to offer my input on this. I also have issues on my Gameboy Pocket.
I literally just did a cap replacement on my Gameboy Pocket just an hour or 2 ago. It behaved marginally better, but not on a consistent basis after a while. Sometimes I can get it to write a game, but it almost never works, and often it takes a couple tries to even get to the everdrive menu.
However, this is with alkalines. I'll be trying others as soon as I can, as I don't doubt that's contributing to the issue.

Edit:
Just purchased some Ultimate Lithium Energizers from Walmart. I tried them out on the pocket and it functions perfectly. Reaches the menu every time, and also is able to write the rom properly every time.

Thus, to me it looks like the answer to this problem is to make sure you're using heavy duty batteries, or the best you can find, and make sure the caps are good. These results are with freshly replaced caps.

I just got a Pocket and sure enough it dose not like the everdrive one bit atleast when running on batteries ill need to get some ultra heavy duty rechargeable ones. even when I run it on my ac adapter I still run into the occasional reboot I guess 200ma just isn't enough. I have yet to try flashing a game when running on the ac adapter I have but I have faith it would fail. thankfully my GBC and Gameboy light work flawlessly.
EDIT: My pocket works flawlessly with fresh AAA battery's guess the batteries I was using to test were almost dead. and the 3rd party adapter is not up to spec.

I got some NiZn batteries from dx.com that work ok-ish. Normal alkaline does not work at all, but these work for about two hours.

I've got a USB line that fits my Pocket but supplies it with 5v instead of 3v, would that be safe to use? Maybe flash, then  take out the line? Also, if I use a GBC or DMG to flash the games and use the Pocket to play them, would the power drain then also be so high?

Nope! That's what I do, and it works fine (with regular old rechargables)...though the GBP loses power a little sooner with the EDGB, if you put in an official cart and power it back on, you can get about ten more minutes or so out of it.

Thanks! I'll try it see how my mileage is.

OK so here is what i found

Backlit MGB (gameboy pocket) running an everdrive GB:

Kent Lii Li-ion batteries - 3hours 15 minutes
Ni-zn                             - 2hours 15 minutes

Substantially better mileage from the Kent Li's. Gotta pay for it though.
I'm sure that this result would vary depending on the resistor you use on the backlight.
Both batteries would run the everdriveGB with no problems even when its flashing to the cart.

Hopefully this helps

Since we are now talking about batteries, does any of you know how much battery life is on a game boy color or a game boy pocket with Energizer ultimate lithium batteries? I have looked all over the internet, but none ever specify what type and brand of batteries!

Um, I do not get your statement. Something to add though: Can someone also tell me the battery life when playing Regular Game boy, Game Boy color/Game Boy, and GBC exclusive games?
