Sorting Roms into Genres (Round 2)
« on: September 02, 2014, 12:34 PM »
I like sorting roms by genre in addition to alpha. It helps with the "paradox of choice" - scrolling through a huge list and making a decision solely based on the name. This way you can think "Shmups" or "Platformers" instead of "Gradius" or "Karnov."

On the last thread omonim2007 posted a much more extensive set than mine. I've cleaned these up and moved to No-Intro as a base to get rid of nonsense -  [h] [f]. All of the categorization is his work.

Here's what the NES looks like for example:

Save this to a directory with an unzipped No-Intro set. It will create directories and copy to them.

Looks good. I like seeing that someone else has used batch files to manipulate the rom file/folder structure. I've done the same, though not with genres (though now I'm considering it - there's enough room to store them both ways, so I may do that). I also commonly use AutoHotKey to do some of this type of stuff as well.

Yeah I would say in addition to alphabetical rather than in place of. Especially when about the smallest SD card you can get is 8 GB these days. In my case I play a lot of shmups and I like having a dedicated folder for them.

This is one of the advantages of the saves being stored in one place rather than alongside the roms. Thanks for sharing.

Love.  It.

That's a whole crapload of subdirectories, but I love it.  If you could do that for all the EDs, I'd be sooooo happy.  I use No-Intro as my base too and would love to get these done.

Yes I agree. It is more specific than I want too. You can tell the guy was hardcore with his categorization. I can do a simplified version once I have the other systems done.

Edit: Everything is up and tested now.

Again, I am working off omonim2007's data set. I don't even have close to the time it would take to do any categorizing of my own for Game Boy etc.

N64 is online. Huzzah! I have hours of manual sorting/spreadsheet fun on this one. If you find errors let me know. The others were far more automated.

Just place it in the folder where your roms are and run it like any program. You'll see a command prompt window pop up for a bit while it copies everything, then close when it's done. This file copies rather than moved so you'll still have your original roms where they were but you'll also have all the subfolders with the roms copied into the appropriate subfolders by genre.

Make sure the bat is in the same folder as your unzipped roms. There isn't much to it.

For my games nights I keep it simple with little verations
Platfomers
Beat-em-ups
Vs Fighting
Sports and racing
You dont have the time (RPGs)
Run and gun
Shooters
Misc
Homebrew
Untested (Dumping ground for new ROMs and ones that dont work)

Little differences such as
A Mario folder on the NES
Sonic folder on Mega Everdrive
Horizontal and vertical shooters folder on the PC Engine
