Akumajō Densetsu's audio is a bit off
« on: September 08, 2014, 02:46 PM »
Hi there! Recently got an Everdrive N8, and I'm quite happy with it. I did notice the VRC6 sound output is a bit off in Akumajō Densetsu, though. The volume is too low for some things, too high for other things, and some notes are held for too long. I realize this is pretty vague, but the introduction song shows the issues off best. The first few notes bleed into each other because they are held for too long on the Everdrive N8, they are cleanly cut on the VRC6. The bass-y parts seem to be lacking as well, compared to the real VRC6.

I'm not the only one who noticed, someone at sega-16 pointed it out, too. They actually pointed out a few more things that are different, as well..

Just wanted to point this out to you, thanks for all of the hard work :)

I agree. i played the real cart then immediately played the everdrive rom and could tell a difference in sound.

Yeah true, especially in the beginning intro. The rest is almost ok...strange

Perhaps original cart contains a supplementary audio chip?

I noticed a few notes held too long in stage 3 as well(or stage 2 if you go down on level select) but it seems like its the same instrument used as the intro so fixing the intro should fix that too. Other than that, everything sounds great!

EDIT: First level music as well as the ghost ship level have some
notes that are held too long as well. Probably related to the intro screen issue

EDIT2: Trying with audio mix set to low completely messes up all of the music.

It does, the VRC6 mapper used has additional sound channels. But the Everdrive N8 supports the VRC6, there are just some slight inaccuracies I noticed, thus the thread.

I discovered a test that will help us test for correct VRC6 behaviour:
Nesdev VRC6 test

Also, holding A and B while pressing start on the menu of Akumajō Densetsu will access the sound test mode for easier testing of music. B plays music from there.
Songs with differences compared to the original so far that I've found:
Prelude - First notes are held too long. Bass notes are very low in volume compared to original
Beginning - Some notes held too long, related to Prelude? Mostly sounds good
Clockwork - Same thing, mostly sounds good
Anxiety - Few notes held for too long in the beginning
Stream - Lower notes need to be slightly louder

Please post if you notice anything else!

http://tcrf.net is a good resource for sound tests and hidden content
