Hey guys, I don't know if any of you are using No-Intro ROM set with your Everdrive N8 but if you do, you'll notice sooner or later that some ROMs are not booting at all and are detected as bad roms by the Everdrive N8 software (or emulator for that matter) even on the latest 2013-01-17 set. Turn out that some ROM in the recent set are missing their respective iNES header so even tough the dump are fine, they won't play on emulator or flash cart. I fixed all those games for my own use and thought it might be useful to others peoples so I decided to create IPS patch for all the non-working dump I found in my set and port it. I figured since it was such a long and annoying manual job (since header are different depending on mapper and component used for the game), it might save a lot of work to other users.

Fix available:

This is for the No-Intro set. If you have no problem booting the ROM on your Everdrive N8 it is not needed. I do not use Goodset as they are usually very outdated so unfortunately I can't verify if they are missing any header at the moment.

Try a few of them first before patching, I've heard that it wasn't an issue on older set. It's weird that it is now part of the set because the game won't even boot on emulator without the header. While I understand headers were added for emulation purpose and are not part of the original game code, it is weird that they would maintain a set with 99% of the rom including it and a few not having it. As far as I know, the only way to be able to run nes game without header are to burn them to eprom and put them on real cart PCB .

Im just curious which is better. The no-intro set or the goodset?

Ive downloaded both and they seem the same to me. Can anyone explain if one is better than the other.

I would definitely say No-Intro. Goodnes set hasn't been updated since 2008 if I remember and it's full of crap, bad dump and crappy old hack.

Try again, it should work. I made a typo in the file name when I updated it to add the 2 FDS game. Sorry about that

Karnov (USA)
Karnov (Japan)
Karnov (Japan) (Rev 1)

I updated the fix pack for the No-Intro set and the following game are now playable:

Babel no Tou (Japan)
Family Jockey (Japan)
Family Mahjong (Japan)
Family Pinball (Japan)
Side Pocket (Japan)
Super Chinese (Japan)
Super Xevious - Gump no Nazo (Japan)
Valkyrie no Bouken - Toki no Kagi Densetsu (Japan)

I also decided to switch to BPM patching instead of the aging IPS format. It is now possible to patch all the game at once to save time (you can still individually patch them also).

No problems! Keep submitting problematic games, some will be easily fixed with some header tweaking and some will require Krikzz attention. But the more game we can fix by our self the more time Krikzz will have to tend to his flash cart garden  ;D

Update: New fix available for Ys III - Wanderers from Ys (Japan)
