SD2Snes LCD Mod
« on: August 26, 2016, 01:42 AM »
Hi all,

I'm really happy with my prototype mod and I figured I would share!

To make this work I customized the firmware to drive the LCD, and also tied the LCD into the SPI lines that drive the FPGA. The LCD also needed 3 more IO lines so I used the P1.1 P1.8 an P1.10 pins at the top there.

This is the screen I used, I'm looking for a better one maybe one like the PSP screen which should take up the whole front of the cart :)

I'll probably have one of my friends help 3D print a better case for it, and obviously cleanup the wiring.

Also I'm new to the forum!

When the SD2SNES loads a rom it looks on the SD card for an image file for that rom. If there is one it displays it on the LCD.

Also on startup it loads the default image I placed for the sd2snes.

That's pretty cool. As a personal project I say you did a pretty sweet job but if you were to sell them I don't think its very practical. Still neat tho.

Right now its raw images rgb565x320x240. Nothing fancy. For the file name add ".565" to the rom file name. I load the image while the snes/fpga are in the reset state after the rom has been loaded in memory.c. May I request the next rev of the board have easier access to the spi lines? :)

That's the goal for sure. I started with a cheap screen that had arduino examples, since when I started I wasn't 100% sure it would work. I just started on this a few weeks ago. I've since found out that the raspberry pis can also use SPI based LCDs. So I ordered this one. I also found the driver source code for the pi so that should get it moving really quick. I also used the mini breadboard to swap out the screen since this isn't the size I want to run with long term.

Which might be perfect or maybe just a little too big. I get it Monday/Tuesday I'll know then.

I think I'll need to move the battery to the back too, since that would give some more room for the lcd to be flush with a newly printed game shell.

Looks awesome, good work. How long do you think the screen will last? I ask because I wonder if having stationary images on it for extended periods of time will burn it out. I don't know anything about this technology, though, so that's why I'm asking for people's opinions.

Very nice, you should keep working on this. If you were able to trim down the size it would be perfect.
