Problem with Master System ROMS
« on: April 28, 2013, 05:24 PM »
Hello, i've tried some master system games. So far, they all worked fine.
But there are games like Alien Syndrome, that when the game starts, the character goes to the left but i'm not pressing anything.  :o

What could be the problem?

It's an issue with the game itself. It doesn't accept a Genesis controller and requires the use of a Master System controller.
Fortunately both controllers are compatible on the Genesis.

This is the list of games that require the SMS controller (or a mod to the Genesis controller/wire):

Alien Syndrome
Bomber Raid
Great Volleyball
Montezuma's Revenge
Penguin Land
Shanghai
Tennis Ace
Where in the World is Carmen San Diego
Wonder Boy in Monster Land

It's been covered pretty well over at Sega-16. One of the better suggestions was to get a male-to-female DB9 adapter and pull the pin from the male side for the select line. Then you simply plug the adapter between the standard pad and the Genesis for games that require an SMS pad. It's the cheapest method that doesn't require buying an SMS pad or modding a Genesis pad.

Digikey... Mouser... any number of electronics parts stores will have the adapter - and then there's eBay like Grambo linked. And if you google the controller pinout, you find pages like this:

http://pinouts.ru/Game/genesiscontroller_pinout.shtml

The select line is pin 7.

I always think that people who use that dumb "let me google that for you" site come across as giant assholes.

I am not going to deny being an asshole; your allegation is correct.
I do try to be a helpful asshole, however.

Sorry Redifer  :)
