Super Mario Advance 4 e-reader edition saves
« on: June 19, 2017, 05:18 PM »
Does anyone know where to find sav files that have unlocked e-switches functionality preloaded that works with the 38 level e-world version of Super Mario Bros. 3?

I'd like to have perhaps two versions one with all switches loaded, and one without red switch ('difficulty switch').

Idk if there's a savefile for it. I do know that the Wii U's GBA VC version has the levels unlocked. An IPS patch was made using the rom extracted from the Wii U. You just have to apply it to your clean rom.

The VC version has the 38 levels but not the switches. But fear not. I ordered an e-reader today and already printed the codes for the switches. Let's see if that works.

Nice, I have the 38 level patch from when it was up on Romhacking.net. But it was removed recently.

Supposedly Solar Magic Advance:

https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/680/

Is supposed to let you hack saves, but for the life of me I can't get it to actually work. I don't know I'm pushing the right options or not. Getting it to work would be nice to adding 'items' to my saves like I had cards... most useful would be to give myself those card only boomerang items, or the card only magic feather items.

This patch sort of works, but removes the fun of collecting items in the game, but it does give you access to all, all at once, and reusable.

I did find a 14 switch save after a while linked from a YouTube video (this is all the switches including unreleased ones, one of them is the semi-broken item drop box like from Super Mario World)...

There is a 7 switch version here on this youtube video linked in the replies below. Presumably only the 'released' switches form US/Japan.

Didn't know this tool. But this actually works for me, I was able to enable the red switch. Still, I am going to wait for my e-reader as I finally want to see this in action :)

Can you explain the steps you used?

You open the tool, go to eCards -> eCard Maker Menu, open the "Save" tab. From there, select the "Switch Effects" menu and select which Switch effects you want and to which file slot they should be applied.

Note that selecting the switches will not enable or select the effects, the important bit is that you select the effects you want.

Then press "Add Effects", select your save file to modify and enjoy.

EDIT: I just realised I have only gotten it to work in the e-reader levels. regular gameplay is unaffected.

Its hard to test if its working in the e-reader levels because a lot of those levels are already modified with strange features... like the whole 'picking up plants' thing is already a thing in the e-reader levels. I couldn't get it to activate any of the unfinished e-reader content in e-reader levels (to see if those could be added).

Also supposedly the above patcher is has choices for different save slots, 3-reader world is like the 4th option down.

Well, I was able to get the red switch and the effect "Enemies replaced by harder ones" to work but only in the ereader save slot. You can verify this by selecting the classic 1-1 world. The first enemy should no longer be a goomba but a spiny (https://www.mariowiki.com/Spiny). I was not able to get this working with the regular save slots 1 - 3.

Furthermore, my e-reader arrived yesterday, but I am struggling to get it to work. The european ROM will not connect to the e-reader at all (my guess that it's not able to find a US e-reader I would need a non-existing european e-reader). The US ROM is able to connect to the e-reader and load the application. It even goes as far as scanning the dotcode for the red switch sucessfully but then throws a communication error. I tried this on my EZ-Flash IV, my Supercard Mini SD and my REVO K101 plus with exactly the same results. I wonder if it would be different with an everdrive GBA (which I don't have).

EDIT: despite what I said above, I got it to work with the US ROM on my EZ-Flash IV and my Flash2Advance cards. Still struggling to get the e-reader to connect to the european ROM.

The European Rom didn't have regular e-carder support out of the box, although its hackable to access much of the e-reader added material. Or so I've read.

I'm using the US rom + 38 level patch.

The european version of the VC release has the e-reader menu. But it throws a communication error when it's supposed to connect to the e-reader.

Are you sure its the UK release specifically, and not the US rom being released to everyone?

The 38 level patch which I used, was designed to work with the US version.

I guess other cards be interesting to access would be the ones for Pokémon, and the ones for Mega-Man Zero games.

Ok so you are using the *.sav file?

The main issue with the EDGBA is that it uses different formats I think, something like:

*.flv

*.s01

I've gotten the .s01 which applies to save slot 1 appears to be able to still work by simply changing .sav file to .s01.

I haven't had that luck with the .flv files.

Also the e-reader and cards were region locked I think. But you can convert them over to US format for the US cartridges.

1. I am using the European ROM dumped from the European Virtual Console Release. I dumped the ROM from RAM myself, see http://gbatemp.net/threads/about-super-mario-advance-4s-release.411467/page-20#post-7169456.

2. I am not using any saves, I am loading the roms without a save file present.

3. I do not own an Everdrive GBA as I don't want to shell out 100€ for a device that I already own 4 different ones of (EZFlashIV, Supercard Mini, Flash2Advanve and K-Card for the Revo)
