NES Metroid / 002D RAM Address
« on: March 04, 2018, 03:53 PM »
There are some discussion going on in Metroid speedruning community
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cam9gyK8Fto
Metroid didn't overwrites 002D RAM address on it's own and because US Metroid have broken RNG calculation  some enemies that suppose to be random are not random. And patterns of those enemies depends on what was in that 002D RAM address on startup.

It's unknown if Everdrive's OS overwrites that 002D byte. If it does then Everdrive can be disallowed in that game or something like that. Is it possible to make OS upgrade or something so that 002D didn't touched by Everdrive so speedrunners will be happy?

I'm not sure how it runs on Everdrive, but that certainly explains why the enemy behavior of the NES version is less random than the FDS version.

When you power up a console with everdrive - first thing you see everdrive's OS menu. In order to show that menu Everdrive should load something in NES RAM. The main question if that OS menu overwrites 002D or not.

CLChambers did some experiments. He have NES Top Loader that gives him a bad pattern with original cartridge, but when he try it with everdrive he got good pattern everytime. So 002D definitely gets overwritten by OS. So that makes Metroid speedruns done on everdrive not as legit as speedruns done on original cartridge.
