Gamecube Gameboy Player Problem
« on: January 16, 2019, 01:11 AM »
Hello. I recently got my Everdrive GBA today. It works fine on my GBA Handhelds ( Micro & SP ) as well as my DS Lite.
I tried playing it on my Gameboy Player and I had issues. ( I have a UK/PAL Gamecube if this helps at all pin-point the issue. )

I tried playing Pokemon Emerald however is crashes just before or on the title screen and makes a very loud crackling sound.
I don't know whether this is an issue with these types of games or an issue with the Everdrive GBA and its compatibility with the Gameboy Player.

I only ask here for advice/help as it works fine on the handhelds just not the player. Any suggestions? I thought it might have something to do with the SD Card I am using but I tried on two and likewise they work fine on the handhelds.

Any suggestions or info would be appreciated. Thanks.  :)

I'll answer the best I can.

1. I am using the Everdrive GBA X5 Model 16 Rev.B

2. I am using the official GBP disc.

3. I am using the GBAOS-v1.12 OS that I got from the Everdrive site.

If your Gamecube is chipped you can try using the Gameboy Interface
And so I go fast.

It's not chipped sadly. I was thinking though it could be the SD Card as it is fairly old.
However with it working on the handhelds I don't think the SD Card is actually the issue. Its very confusing.  :-\

Have you tried original cartridges on the Gameboy Player, do they work fine?

It plays original cartridges just fine. I did more testing with other games like Super Mario Advance to which I managed to play it but a white screen when entering a door to another level.
I think it might be the SD Card as I checked and its about 10 years old. I should definitely try another SD Card before thinking its something wrong with the actual Everdrive.

Here is an update on the situation. I got myself a SanDisk Micro SD Card (32GB). I formatted it using a tool that was not a Windows Built in tool due to seeing that they don't do a perfect job at formatting all of the card. Anyways I booted up the EverDrive again and some issues were resolved.

First off I noticed a much faster time with loading games and the initial booting up. I had no errors or crashes when playing Super Mario Advance which was a good sign.

It does seem though that the Pokemon Games still crash on the Player but not on the handhelds.

With doing more research I saw that the Pokemon ROMS need to be clean and preferably "no-intro" ROMS. I managed to find one of these for Pokemon Emerald so I hope this alleviates the issue I have been having.

Just plugged mine to see if I had the same issue, but it runs the game smoothly on the GB Player, even a romhack of Pokémon Red runs perfect, maybe it's your Emerald rom

Speaking of Gameboy Player... how well does it run pre-installed emulators such as Goomba and PocketNES if at all possible PCEAdvance though there is still no confirmation how the device can run RAW PCE games without the pre-made ones in Smokemonsters latest pack.

It'll run them exactly the same as a GBA.
It IS a GBA in a box.
My Wideboy runs them exactly the same as the handhelds.

Ah neat but how do RAW PCE games work on the GBA X5 not counting the premade ones that smokemonster combined into a multiple game file?
