There are a number of no-disk/micro-SD mods for Gamecube already... Require a bit of soldering. There is no external drive method as far as I know though...

Actually I forgot there's the wasp custom by BadAssConsoles. I wish the wasp was open-source so that other people can make them.

GC Loader (drive replacement near 100% compatible) with GameBoy interface.  Requires some soldering.

https://shop.dansprojects.com/gc-loader.html

SD2SP2 (cheap solution for Action Replay, frees up 2nd memory card slot, not fully compatible game-wise).  No soldering.

Run SWISS on either of them to load games.

Just use Swiss

Everything uses Swiss now.  How you access it (GC Loader, SP2SD2, Action Replay, burned disc, etc) is the decision.

I tried getting into Swiss by using Action Replay and an SD Gecko after hearing that the Action Replay disc is region free and is able to launch homebrew from an SD Gecko. But the Action Replay disc I got turned out to be a later version that is region locked. It was USA region and wouldn't boot, I lost the energy and stopped there.

SP2SD2 seems to be a good solder-less alternative though.

Well you can't boot from it, you still need Action Replay.

I have a xeno modded and hdmi modded Gamecube, then I just use a SD memory card adapter to load up and burn the latest version of swiss disc. For any games that have any issues running, I just burn a copy and the Xeno allows me to play the burned mini dvd-r's. The burned copies run just like the real disc. Can also adjust the pot to give the laser more power if there is ever any difficulty reading discs in the future.
