SDSNES PRO - Choices are not highlighted in menu
« on: October 25, 2019, 03:52 PM »
Hello,

I just bought a SD2SNES PRO from amazon.de (reseller Krikzz) universal Shell
I put firmware 1.10.3 and bios files on it and i use it on my original SNES(US version).
Every games seems to launch properly but i've got a problem on the menu : i cannot see the highlighted rom/menu selected.
Up and down keys are ok but i must select the game blindly because the line is not highlighted. Also i dont'know which menu is selected for the same reason.

Can you help me ?

I'm at work now. But in the attachement, by example, i don't see the highlighted "In-game savestates" in blue. I have access to all menu lines with up and down, but i can't figure out where i am. It's like there's no highlights, or no change in color when i go up and down in menu or files ...

Games launch properly you say, but are you sure they have no graphical glitches? Play some SMW or something and see if you notice anything strange.

Sounds like a bug in the OS though.

Update : I've tested the SD2SNES PRO on a European SNES console.
The menu works well, i've got higlighted choices and every roms are ok. My SD2SNES seems not faulty.

i think my problem is DMA related.
i've read that sd2snes menu makes heavy use of (H)DMA.
Furthermore on my SNES US, with one game, Super Ghouls and Ghost (US or  JAP) version, only the upper 25% of the screen is drawn, the rest is black.
Other games runs fine. i ran also the SNES TEST CARD v1.3 with no error.
It must be my snes hardware, something very specific because i encounter no other glitches or problem except the 2 before.

Sounds like a hardware problem indeed. See if there are any pins that needs to be reflowed. You may also try a full recap of the system.

What version of S-CPU, S-PPU1 and S-PPU2 is it (can be checked in the SD2SNES menu)? Is it an older SNES or an 1CHIP?

I'm not used with these kind of things ! It's an old SNES who slept 25 years in a box.
I never opened  it. Serial Number is like UN129XXXXX
SD2SNES reports CPU/PPU1/PPU2 as 2/1/1

2/1/1 that's a nice early model, and it can't be 1CHIP. Since it has S-CPU v2 it has the DMA bugs fixed, so we can scratch out a buggy CPU.

If you can get it repaired somewhere I suggest try reflowing (resolder) pins on the chips and/or changing all electrolytic capacitors on the system for new quality caps. It's not easy to do if you have never soldered before so you might want to have it repaired by an expert or learn to solder properly and do some practising.

Could it be a botched theme? Try redownloading a new menu theme from:

Hello,

i've tested other themes with no luck...

i finally found a gamebit screwdriver to open my SNES-US

1990 Nintendo
SHVC-CPU-01
Nintendo S-CPU A 5A22-02 1JF 88
Nintendo S-PPU1 5C77-01 1KV JM
Nintendo S-PPU2 5C78-01 1KV HZ
Nintendo S-WRAM 9144 56 S
Two Chips MOSEL MS62256CL-10FC 9139 KM84

Everything seems absolutely fine on the mainboard :  solders, caps (like i just bought it !)
I cleaned up the cartridge slot (by any chance) but i got always this menu problem on the SD2SNES PRO and some layers are still missing in some games like Super Ghouls and Ghosts or Donkey Kong Country 3 by example (on main screen the red nintendo logo on the wheel is garbled and in the second level  i cannot see the bananas under the water because it's not transparent, it's just dark blue)
I've read that ikari_01 says that "older models like an 2/1/2 seems to be particulary error prone."

Is it possible that my old snes model, a 2/1/1, is not well supported by my SD2SNES PRO ?
It's my childhood's snes :'(

I just bought a pal SNES (2/1/3) and it works like a charm but i absolutely prefer the 60hz>50hz and i will be pleased that it works too on my SNES-US ...

Color math is probably broken on your PPU2. Some tests (color effects) in the Burn-In Cartridge demo will probably look wrong, too. I think there is a reference video on YouTube.

Thanks for your time and the answer ikari_01 !

I double checked with this video https://youtu.be/ZVbrbRcK4FY?t=194 and everything looks absolutely identical.
It is strange, almost all titles run perfectly except a few ones in some particular level, and this SDS2SNES menu higlight/overlay problem.

See attachments
Super Ghouls and Ghosts have only problems when stage starts (intro and menu are ok)
and Super Donkey Kong 3 in this particular underwater area ...
