FDS games compatibility with N8 everdrive
« on: January 12, 2020, 02:10 AM »
Everdrive N8-OG - OS v1.23 using non-modded NES Frontloader

I was looking through trying some FDS titles by Jaleco, half of them would get stuck on the Set Side B screen after the title screen, the others were able to load the game after swapping.

Works (auto swapped fine) :
Big Challenge! Dogfight Spirit
Druid: Kyōfu no Tobira
Fūun Shōrin Ken
Knight Lore
Monty no Doki Doki Daisassō: Monty on the Run

Didn't work (stuck on Set Side B screen)
Big Challenge! Go! Go! Bowling
Big Challenge! Gun Fighter
Big Challenge! Judo Senshuken
Fūun Shōrin Ken: Ankoku no Maō
Radical Bomber!! Jirai Kun

If anyone else with an N8-OG or N8-PRO could also check to see if they get the same results?

These are just a few titles I've tested (Doki Doki Panic also runs fine), I don't know if there's a list of which FDS games work and don't work with the N8? I may test more if I find the time.

EDIT: I found the time to test every licensed FDS game as listed on wikipedia, 38 did not work:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1frtgSgFAacAPj3C2H6mH44mfyAXRRbU35AdM5w-JkHw/edit?usp=sharing

I can confirm the last three non-working on your list. There was another one that I've already lost that didn't swap as well.

I did some more testing for the rest of the games, almost 1/5th didn't work. I did wait quite a bit on their Set Side B screens.  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1frtgSgFAacAPj3C2H6mH44mfyAXRRbU35AdM5w-JkHw/edit?usp=sharing

Auto swap function is looking for specific activity to determining disk swap request, but some games working differently compared to majority and there is just no way to detect when they want another disk side.

So is there a way to implement a button combo, similar to using save states, that would trigger the side swap for games that won't swap correctly?

Games usually not read controllers during they wait for another disk side, so it will not work also. This is why N8 PRO has physical button

So the games that didn't work, will they work on the N8 Pro?
