Just a couple compatibility issues
« on: March 21, 2020, 08:46 PM »
First post, but I have searched. Man, I love my Everdrive! I had a PowerPak years ago, but the compatibility and sorting functions of the Everdrive trumps it. But I am having a couple compatibility issues with a few games and the pinned list seems a little dated. Does anyone have any advice on these games or have the same issues? Most of them work on FCEUX, but not on the Everdrive.

AD&D: Pool of Radiance
Baseball Stars 2
F117A - Stealth Fighter
Mermaids of Atlantis
Ring King
Space Shuttle Project
Trolls on Treasure Island (Doesn't work on FCEUX)
Vindicators

They all load, but are glitchy. I can live without 8 titles, like I said, it's way better than the PowerPak, but I thought I'd check here with the experts before I give up. Should I keep up the hunt? I had an issue with Karnov, but I managed to fix the header.

I tried out a few of these on the last firmware released, on an original EDN8:

AD&D: Pool of Radiance - No issues that I could see through character creation or up until I was given control of my party.
Baseball Stars 2 - Didn't see any issues in the game, played an inning or two.
F117A - Stealth Fighter - Didn't see any issues here.
Mermaids of Atlantis - Didn't get a chance to try this one, it's apparently not on my card.
Ring King - Definitely glitchy with my ROM; title screen appears briefly, then all black. In game graphics are goofed heavily.
Space Shuttle Project - Surprisingly no issues that I saw. This one has been a pain before.
Trolls on Treasure Island (Doesn't work on FCEUX) - Looked like it was running okay in-game, but there is something weird with the display on the text scroll and the map screen.
Vindicators - Messed up scrolling.

As far as assessing whether you have good ROMs or not, I'd probably choose a different emulator like Mesen. It's more accurate.

Mappers for the games affected:

Mapper 206: Ring King, Vindicators (also note that Karnov was previously glitchy, and is also this mapper)
Mapper 79: Trolls on Treasure Island (also note that Mermaids of Atlantis is this mapper, which I didn't test)

I tested the games above and had the same behavior as Sarge with the exception the AD&D definitely was a little glitchy.  I'm rolling back my firmware to v. 16 or v. 20 RC6.  I don't believe I had any issues with those on the EDN8.

I just installed v. 20 RC 6 and all games are working.  Space Shuttle title screen is messed up but game is playable.  All else was fine and I’m using a stock front loader.

Looks okay to me on the latest firmware and an original N8 and frontloader.

Oh, no, I've got an NTSC model. I don't think the game got a PAL release, so the problem is likely that you're trying to run an NTSC ROM on a PAL system.

EDIT: Here's what it looks like in Mesen when setting the region to PAL.

I just looked into my ROM set, and used Great Hierophant's posted script to correct the header for Ring King. It works now - it was tagged as mapper 4, which is incorrect, in my particular set.

I'm going to give some others a try, too, and see what happens.

EDIT: Yep, fixes Vindicators, the Trolls game, and I tested the Mermaids game and it also worked fine. Excellent!

There will be a few games which will not work properly using the headers produced by the Script, so a few adjustments given here will fix those games for the N8 : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n0WbGs1ckHygvn3nGduvPriM6ivEGdyud-yatUIQrRw/edit?usp=sharing
