64drive VS. Everdrive 64?
« on: March 26, 2020, 10:23 AM »
Im a broke college kid and I want to get into N64 modding and would love a flash cart too. Which cart would be better? I just want the games to be as closest to a retail cartridge as possible. No save errors, as close as 100% compatibility, and all that. Cost is also important too.

The only real differences I've seen before was the price. The 64 Drive was much more expensive for almost the exact same features. But now both have improved and the ED64 is split into the v3/x7 and the v2/v2.5 where the v3/x7 is much more expensive. The 64 Drive is now much closer to the v3/x7 in both terms of features and price. The 64 Drive claims to have 100% compatibility but that's just bogus (the manual admits that games with special hardware other than RTC doesn't work though).

I don't have a 64 Drive but this is what I gathered about them all:

SD speed (affects loading speed of games)
v2/v2.5: ?? (very fast loading)
v3/x7: 23MB/s (very fast loading)
64 Drive: 23MB/s (very fast loading)

SD capacity (affects how many roms you can have on SD)
v2/v2.5: Uses SD and SDHC cards (much more than needed for a full romset)
v3/x7: Uses micro SD and SDHC cards (much more than needed for a full romset)
64 Drive: Uses micro SD cards up to 128GB (much more than needed for a full romset)

ROM capacity (affects largest possible game you can load)
v2/v2.5: ?? (large enough for all games except Pokemon Stadium Gold Silver)
v3/x7: ?? (large enough for all games)
64 Drive: 256MB (large enough for all games)

Save support (EEPROM 512B, EEPROM 2kB, SRAM 32kB, SRAM 96kB, FLASH 1024kB)
v2/v2.5: All 5 types (with latest OS)
v3/x7: All 5 types
64 Drive: All 5 types

CIC support (affects game compatibility)
v2/v2.5: Does not support CIC 6105/7103 (unless UltraCIC II is installed)
v3/x7: All (comes with UltraCIC II)
64 Drive: All (not sure what CIC clone it uses but it works the same way)

Console region (what system it works on, game region is unrelated)
v2/v2.5: Requires region adapter to play on the other region (unless an UltraCIC is installed)
v3: Region free (comes with UltraCIC II and universal cart case)
x7: Region free (comes with UltraCIC III and universal cart case)
64 Drive: Electrically region free (stock cart case is not physically region free)

Hacked 64DD games support
v2/v2.5: Yes (with latest OS)
v3/x7: Yes
64 Drive: Yes

Hacked Aleck64 games support
v2/v2.5: Yes (with latest OS)
v3/x7: Yes
64 Drive: Yes

Battery (used to keep saves without needing to reset and also used for RTC)
v2/v2.5: No (requires resetting to menu after playing to keep save data)
v3/x7: Yes (64DD games still requires resetting)
64 Drive: Yes (probably the same as v3/x7)

Real-Time Clock (RTC, used by the game Animal Forest)
v2/v2.5: No
v3/x7: Yes
64 Drive: Yes

Controller Pak Backup (a bonus feature in the OS)
v2/v2.5: Yes (with latest OS)
v3/x7: Yes
64 Drive: Yes

Game compatibility
v2/v2.5: At least 6 games not working (3 with UltraCIC), see compatibility thread for details
v3/x7: At least Mario no Photopi is not fully featured
64 Drive: At least Mario no Photopi is not fully featured

USB 2.0 port (mainly for developers)
v2: Optional
v2.5: No
v3/x7: Yes
64 Drive: Yes (20+MB/s)

WiFi (mainly for developers)
v2/v2.5: No
v3/x7: No
64 Drive: Yes (WiFi ESP8266 802.11b/g/n)

Other features
v2/v2.5/v3/x7: GameShark cheats, auto patching (IPS/APS), crappy NES emulator (Neon64)
64 Drive: Debug Pushbutton (mainly for developers I think), proper manuals, crappy NES emulator (Neon64), MP3 playback

Price
v2: Not sold anymore
v2.5: Can't find it (might be renamed to x5 in the future)
v3: Not sold anymore
x7: $175-$249.99 (depending on store, probably exclusive shipping)
64 Drive: $199 (exclusive shipping)

In short, the 64 Drive and the Everdrive 64 v3/x7 are very similar in many ways. It's hard to say which one is best.

The v3/X7 can also run the hacked 64DD games. Only v1 can't but it's discontinued long ago.

Oh I know that. I'm talking about actual 64DD disk support which is not yet supported.

64drive can't run 64DD games natively either.  Just the cart hacks.

Honestly, if you plan to do a lot of hacking, and I mean a lot.  The 64drive is better.  If you plan to play lots of games and do some minor mods, you're probably OK with the X7.  Which is good since the 64drive hasn't been available for like a year now I think.
Projects: Zelda OoT GCtoN64, Doshin the Giant, SSSV, Sim City 64, Getter Love, Shiren
Flash Carts: EverDrive64 2.5, EverDrive N8, SD2SNES

He had one more post (https://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=5161.msg73762#msg73762) but now I see that it's out of context. What an ass.

It's not really a bad topic though and I'm kind of glad I got a chance to do a comparison between the flashcarts. Hopefully it will help someone else reading this.
