Off Topic / Re: Atari 7800 Everdrive... Any interest in this?

Actually it sounds like it might be released this year. They're calling it the "the Concerto cartridge"  http://atariage.com/forums/topic/220696-new-harmony-product-harmony-encore/

EverDrive MD / Re: EverDrive MD and RetroGen Adapter?

I made some patches for the problem games. They should work fine one patched. http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1203.0

The benefit of the patches (attached to the first post) is that you can use the games without any hardware adapters. Of course if playing the actual carts the adapter cable you describe is required.

Thanks, glad they were helpful!

The register for selecting card slot, cartridge or expansion is at 0x3e. I opened up the roms in MESS with the debugger running and set a watchpoint at 3e. The bios will write to the port a few times to detect what slot the game is plugged in at. After that the game will write to the register one or more times with a value of 0xA# (cartridge slot active). I went to the rom offset indicated in the debugger and changed the value(s) to 0x6# (expansion slot active).

Here are the patches for Outrun and Lord of the Sword. Please check and see if they work. Thanks for asking for them. It was fun figuring out.

I'm assuming you have the Everdrive connected to the expansion slot? Could you see if these work? These games write to the memory control register and activate the cartridge slot (and deactivate the expansion slot). I changed the writes to activate the expansion slot instead. These should fix the problem.
I forced the region on Time Soldiers to US as well so it would show English text.

Note these will now only work when run from the expansion slot.

Thanks, that patch worked...

You don't have any insight into patches for some other "FM-capable" games that don't open when run normally on the Japanese system (Scrambe Spirits, Rastan, Time Soldiers), do you?

What is wrong with them exactly? I don't have my SMS set up and they all work in emulation (apart from Scramble Spirits showing Japanese text). I made up region patches for them in case that helps.

Try this. It should force the region to Export (US/EU).

I'm sure it's possible though I don't know how hard it would be. I'll take a look.
Edit: It's a more complicated problem. Don't think I can fix those games but once I get my Genesis for testing I'll see.

Mega EverDrive / Genesis controller compatibility fixes for SMS games
« on: December 29, 2013, 10:53 PM »
Posted about this in the Everdrive MD subforum as well. Thought it might be a bit more visible as it's own topic. There are a few master system games that don't work with genesis controllers. Note this is a problem with the games themselves not the Everdrive.

Alien Syndrome
Bomber Raid
Great Volleyball
Montazuma's Revenge
Penguin Land
Tennis Ace
Shanghai
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
Wonder boy in Monster Land

I believe these games don't work due to the Japanese/Export check the games perform. Part of the region check toggles the select line on the controller port. It's supposed to be reset but these games fail to do that.

I patched the games to reset the select line or bypass the part of the region detection code that writes to the select line.

These were patched to reset the select lines (Please check crc of Patched rom if it doesn't work):
Montazuma's Revenge (8fc6bb9c)
Penguin Land (cb437bc2)
Wonder boy in Monster Land (cdc3c8df)
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? (c63e4d42)
Shanghai (91387e3f)

Region detection patch:
Alien Syndrome (6b3e06ff)
Bomber Raid (c880978a)
Great Volleyball (bd29dabf)
Tennis Ace (b0b086bb)

Thanks for checking! For the ones I changed the region check on the game may not detect region correctly on a Japanese console. EU/US should be fine.

Could you check the crcs on the patched roms that don't work?
should be:
Tennis Ace: b0b086bb
Wonder Boy in Monster Land: cdc3c8df

A non-hardware option to fix the problem (maybe).

I took a look at the games that don't work with a genesis controller. They don't work because as part of the region check the game writes to the select line on the controller (port $3f). It's supposed to reset the port (write FF to it) after the check but these games don't.

I don't have my genesis or sms set up to test these at the moment (moved recently) but I made some patches to fix the problem games. This is my first time trying to patch a game. Could somebody see if these games work with genesis controllers after patching?

These were patched to reset the select lines:
Penguin Land
Wonder boy in Monster Land
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
Montazuma's Revenge
Shanghai

The rest are a bit harder to fix. I made patches for these that skip the part of the region check that writes to the select line. It would be better to just reset the register but I don't know how to add new code ( as apposed to just editing hex without moving anything). This might have side effects for consoles with a region switch or owners of FM boards (Bomber Raid and Alien Syndrome are fm games).

Great Volleyball
Alien Syndrome
