No issues on my front-load NES with original EDN8. Bad ROM dump maybe?

I've used DriveSort with my Everdrives and Harmony Cart for years, and have had zero issues with it.

Set it to sort by long filename, and to sort/save subdirectories, and it'll do the whole card in one go.

EverDrive N8 / Re: Issues with 1.23 on original N8?

Well that's strange, I tried upgrading to 1.23 again, but this time, I deleted everything in EDFC first (except SAVE). And like last time, I defragmented the card after copying. Now Journey To Silius seems to be working fine. I did run into an issue with SMB2J, though, where it froze at the point where it would normally load from side B (between worlds 4 and 5). Not sure if it's just a damaged disk image.

EverDrive N8 / Issues with 1.23 on original N8?

Can anybody else confirm that Journey to Silius (and the Japanese version, Rough/Raf World) aren't working on the original N8 model? When I try running either under 1.23, it just freezes with a white screen. I've also been having intermittent FDS compatibility issues, but redownloading a fresh No-Intro set helped somewhat. Rolling back to 1.16 fixed the problems.

Mega EverDrive / Need a replacement microSD slot
« on: May 28, 2018, 07:59 PM »
I have a Mega ED v2, and the microSD slot has taken a beating. It's still working, but will probably fall apart completely eventually. I'm comfortable soldering in a new card slot, but does anybody know of a specific compatible part I can buy?

The original EDGB uses flash RAM to hold the current game ROM, and loading a game requires first erasing the flash, then writing the game. Flash RAM writes are of course slower than DRAM/SRAM. The X series instead uses a DRAM (or was it SRAM?) to hold the game ROM, so copying the game into RAM is much faster. Thus, while it isn't truly "instant", it is a heck of a lot faster.

Also of note, I could never get Hao-kun no Fushigina Tabi (Mystery Quest) for FDS to work, but I also can't rule out the possibility that it might be a bad dump.

I seem to recall needing to disable save states in the Everdrive's config menu to get Star Tropics to work. See if that helps.

Wow, they actually made mini SDHC? I'll be there was a whole one device that supported it.

I had an M3 Perfect miniSD, and it was kinda sucky. First, it needed miniSD cards, which were popular for about 2 hours around 2007. Good luck finding them today. Also, I couldn't get it to work properly with cards over 1 GB (not that miniSD cards ever went past 2 GB). And then you had to use that janky ROM installation tool to make sure the ROMs were patched for saving. It would create 1 MB (!) save files regardless of actual save size, but it didn't actually work with 128 KB flash saves, so F-Zero Climax wouldn't save properly (and that game was one of the major reasons I ordered the thing in the first place). Got an ED GBA arriving within the next day or two, so good riddance, I say.

You can run GB/GBC games on a GBA ED if you put a GBC emulator (like Goomba) on your SD card. You CANNOT then link to another GB/GBC, as the GBA runs at a different voltage in GBA mode (can't remember if it's higher or lower). If you want GB/GBC multiplayer, you'll need two EDGBs (which will work on a GBA, and support linking since the GBA is running in GBC mode).

EverDrive GB / Re: Question about save file for everdrive GB

What happens when you try to copy them off your card? I've had no trouble using a Mega Memory card to move saves from a real cartridge to the EDGB, and then from there moved the SRAM file into an emulator (specifically a 3DS Virtual Console Pokemon game).

EverDrive N8 / Defrag your SD card!
« on: November 20, 2016, 02:22 AM »
I just updated to OS15, and FDS games stopped working ("loading..." and then black screen; not even Reset would bring it back). I saw some recommendations to copy stuff off the card and back on to reduce fragmentation to fix assorted issues.

Better yet, I just hit it with Defraggler (Windows defrag won't let you do SD cards, since it's normally pointless). That fixed FDS games, and also a couple of ROMs I had copied over that weren't working, which I chalked up to incompatibility.

Apparently the ED doesn't handle fragmented files properly. I'm not sure if it only reads in the first fragment, or if it just keeps reading sequential blocks without properly following the fragment chain, but file fragmentation is a big no-no, it seems.

This is working perfectly for transferring saves from my original carts to the ED, but I can't get Picross 2 to work, oddly. I do the backup from my cart, then load the save into the ED. When I start Picross 2, it takes a few extra seconds to start, like it's detected a save checksum error and is wiping SRAM. Weird. I wonder if there are different ROM revisions for that game or something.

EDIT: Finally got it. I must have been getting a bad read from the cart. I dumped the save file again, and got it to restore successfully. Hooray!

Yeah, I'm suspecting it's something like that. Just want to make sure there isn't anything wrong with my setup that's preventing it from working. I'm running my NES with a Genesis model 1 power supply, and I disabled the CIC chip and did the expansion audio mod, but I'm assuming none of those things would be interfering.
