So I lost my save on a Super Metroid randomizer this weekend. I was a little pissed, but figured I did something stupid, and finished up the seed (backing up the save in another slot periodically just in case). Well, it just happened again at lunch today with a new seed; I lost a good 40 minutes of gameplay, and when I did another long reset, I had the green and red LEDs flashing as in the YouTube video below. I'm back at work, so I can't check anything else, but if anyone has any suggestions, I will follow up when I go home.

https://youtu.be/wZlkkbLWxyw

FYI, I always long reset before turning off the console, and until Saturday that kept me from losing saves :(

Any ideas?

Edit: This is firmware 1.8.0. Also, I copy a batch of 10 randomizer seeds onto the card at a time, and the first time this occurred was the first seed of the current batch, so I certainly can't rule out contact issues with the SD card, which I just took out and put back in on Saturday.

Edit: Oh, here's something. I was playing the same seed again, and it inexplicably went back to the SD2SNES menu in the middle of gameplay after about 40 minutes of playing with no issues (in-game hooks are off, and my key setup for Super Nt is Start+Select+up for reset in order to deliberately make it a little hard to press by accident). And the save was gone again when I started it back up. I'm about to switch to 0.1.7e with the latest redguy firmware to see if I still get the same issue. I'll play through about four or five seeds before I am ready to blame the firmware. But why would it spontaneously go back to the menu, especially with in-game hooks off?

Sorry for the double-post, but I figure this is two weeks later, so the update merits a bump.

Okay, so since switching back to Redguy's last firmware, I have played through 10 random seeds (speedrunner difficulty), roughly 15 hours of gameplay, and have not had a single issue. By comparison, on 1.8.0 I played 2-3 seeds with no problems, but had it spontaneously go back to the SD2SNES menu and kill my saves three times on two other seeds. At this point, I am ready to tentatively blame 1.8.0 for the problems. :(

I also notice I wasn't too specific about my setup. I am playing on Super Nt, SD2SNES revision E1, and I used dotsarecool's menu editor (just edited the image, not colors or anything else) on both the Redguy firmware and 1.8.0.

Welp, spoke too soon. It just happened again, this time on Redguy's last firmware--I went back to the SD2SNES menu spontaneously in the middle of a game and lost my save though this time I did not lose my save. I wonder if it might be that my SD2SNES itself is finally giving up the ghost then after over 300 Super Metroid rando seeds and countless hours of RPGs and puzzle games... :(

One thing I DID notice was that it has seemed to happen in about the same place on the world map each time: in red Brinstar, on or near the elevator to Crateria three out of the four times it's happened to me (and the fourth one may have happened there too; I can't remember). Still, could just be coincidence, and between the last two incidences of it happening, I've probably used that elevator 20-30 times.

Edit: Aaaand it happened again on the same seed, this time while leaving Kraid's lair. Thinking it's probably my SD2SNES at this point. But weird that I did 12 seeds with no problem, and then it happened twice on the same seed. Might have to switch to my PowerPak for a while until I buy a new SD2SNES, unless ikari has some ideas, lol.

Is this happening with any unmodified commercial games?

I don't think it's too much of a reach to suggest that a hacked ROM might occasionally exhibit unwanted behavior. Perhaps this is an edge case exacerbated by a hardware issue, but I wonder if you should eliminate the most obvious (potential) point of failure first.

I think we have figured this out. I already put this on my YouTube video:

I figured out a pattern. The green light on the SD2SNES starts flickering when it is about to fail, then the flickering gets more intense with longer and longer periods where the green light is out, then it goes back to menu. The flashing lights shown here happen when I try to restart the game after the crash. It's definitely MUCH worse on 1.8.0 firmware (and it's clearly gotten worse over the last month since it happened), but still apparently can happen on others. It's also not exclusive to Super Metroid Randomizer, and it happened on real hardware too.

Ikari thinks it's a thermal issue involving a bad trace or solder joint that gets worse over time (and some small sub-cycle deviations might explain why it's worse on the newer firmware).

Already ran the diagnostic. It was normal.

And read my post above. It happens on real hardware too, so my Super Nt firmware is irrelevant, but I have the newest.

Already ordered a new SD2SNES. 6 years of very frequent use was a good long run, even at the $250 or whatever I paid for it back in 2012. Maybe some day, I will try to find and fix the problem on my old SD2SNES if it turns out to just be a weak solder point and not a bad trace. But I will also be happy to have Rev. H of the board and an NA shell that fits my Super Nt better.

Did you buy your SD2SNES from Krikzz? You can always send it back to him for repairs, but I don't think it will be free after 6 years.

I bought it from Stone Age Gamer, like this one. And I'll consider it, but not anytime soon, as I have this rev. H now.
