Hello folks,

Hope everyone is keeping well.  I have a bit of an irk with my Mega Everdrive X7 (OS 3.14) running on my PAL MK1 Megadrive with switchless modification for EU/US 60/JP 60 modes.  I have the EU/US/JP Master System bios ROMs in the MEGA folder, using the appropriate nomenclature.

- On powering up the console with the cartridge inserted, I am taken to a black screen, which remains until I press the Reset button on the cartridge.
- This then takes me to the 'Produced by or under licence from Sega Enterprises' splash screen and into the Everdrive menu as normal.
- From this point, ROMs can then be loaded as normal and pressing the console reset button and pressing Start, the current ROM loads fine, as expected. (the last used cart is still in memory after a power cycle.

I've conducted numerous Google searches and most black screen issues seem to levitate around the cartridge not working at all, which isn't the case here.  After I've pressed the cartridge reset button after powering up the console, all is fine, but it's bugging me that the cart won't boot straight into the menu without my having to press the button.

I've tried the following, all to no avail:

- Removing/reinserting the cart - it's definitely not an insertion issue as all carts work on the console.
- Resetting to defaults.
- Booting the cart with no ROM folders, so it's just the OS folder on the MicroSD.
- Booting the console in EU/US/JP modes.
- Using the original 10v power supply and my replacement 9v supply.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this, please?

Thanks!

That's quite strange? It should boot straight to the ''Produced By Or Under Licence Screen'' and then flick different colours for a spilt second and then go to the Everdrive menu of ROMS.

Have you got another Genesis/Mega Drive to try the X7 on? Be interesting to see if the same thing happens on another Mega Drive? At least that way you might be able to determine which one is at fault - the X7 or the modded Mega Drive model 1 (PAL).

Thanks Adrian. That's what's baffling me at the moment - I had an X5 on my previous Mega Drive (albeit with a slightly different mod) and it always booted straight to the menu, rather than having to press the reset button on the cart.

I've a backup Mega Drive incoming for comparison - will be interesting to see if this little foible occurs there also.

Cheers!

Andy.

Just as an update, my second modded Mega Drive (High Definition Audio version) arrived today and the X7 boots straight into the menu after the flashing colours as expected.

Bit baffled by my other one needing the Reset button pressing on first boot, but at least I know it's not some error in the way I've set up the X7.

Cheers!

And in an unexpected move, I have the same issue on the new Mega Drive after powering it off and back on again.  Next step is to try a different SD card with it.

Tried a couple of different MicroSD (all Sandisk) and still the same issue.  I'll try an alternative power supply next, with at least 1.5ma.

So at first it was okay and then it started repeating the same procedure as your other Mega Drive?

Yes - completely baffling.  The sequence of events was as follows on both Mega Drives:

- Colour flash and straight into the menu on first boot.
- After powering off, subsequent boots would be to a black screen until I press the Reset button on the cartridge.

It's almost as if something is being written to the MicroSD that is stalling the cart from booting into the menu, until resetting the cart.  I've ordered a couple more Sandisk MicroSD cards for something else, so will be trying them in the X7 when they arrive tomorrow.

I'm also awaiting an alternative power supply just in case the current one isn't providing enough current to power the X7 fully.

I'll post again with the results of the next round of testing.

Good news at least - the new MicroSD is working fine in the X7.  The Sandisk I'd been using was an older red/grey 16GB.

Should anyone encounter this issue, this is the MicroSD I bought and works fine with the X7.

Or so I thought.  Firing up the Mega Drive today after thinking everything was fine on Wednesday, the problem is back.  I'm close to giving up at this point as I've tried the following:

- Different MicroSD Cards (mostly Sandisk/Samsung - no cheap brands)
- Power supplies (original and replacement - all deliver the appropriate voltage/current/polarity)
- A second Mega Drive console
- Deleting the MEGA folder and copying over the 3.14 firmware MEGA folder again
- Formatting the SD to FAT32 (both full and quick formats, including an SD formatting program linked elsewhere in the ED forums).
- Tried powering up without the Master System Bios files.
- Tried powering up with no game ROMs on the MicroSD.
- Tried other Mega Drive carts (it's not a connector/insertion issue as the X7 works fine after pressing the reset button on startup)
- I have less than 175 ROMS in each folder, mostly under 100.

Should it help with any diagnosis, the contents of the MEGA folder prior to installing MicroSD into X7:

MEGA.BIN
MEGA.RBF
smsbioseu.sms
smsbiosjp.sms
sms-bios-readme
smsbiosus.sms
SVP.RBF

Contents of MEGA folder after installing MicroSD into X7, powering up and powering down:

SAVE folder
SNAP folder
TEXT folder
Registry
MEGA.BIN
MEGA.RBF
smsbioseu.sms
smsbiosjp.sms
sms-bios-readme
smsbiosus.sms
SVP.RBF

It's irritating me as there's an issue somewhere and each time I have to press the reset button on the console to use the X7, it's a reminder of that.

Cheers!

Hello there - I've had the issue occurring with no games present on the Micro SD, so I don't think the games I've loaded on the X7 are a factor.  As part of my troubleshooting, once the cart boots into the OS after pressing the cart Reset button, I've had no issues running any games (be them on Mega Drive or Master System).

Cheers!
