Support for Vast Fame bootleg games? (Feature Request)
« on: January 27, 2021, 11:59 PM »
Hey there!

Would it be possible to implement support for bootleg GBA games by Vast Fame? Ironically they have some fancy copy protection and don't work on the EverDrive GBA X5 :(

Handheld Underground has a lot of blog posts about these games, like:

taizou (the author of those blog posts) has contributed the code to the emulator mGBA to make these games playable:
https://github.com/mgba-emu/mgba/blob/master/src/gba/vfame.c

According to taizou, mGBA's source code is currently the best documentation on the copy protection ^^ He seemed quite responsive on Twitter, I think he'd be happy to help if Krikzz actually wants to implement this and has any questions.

It would be great to be able to play these games on real hardware :)

Wow that takes me back, has been years since I checked hhugme… I still have that obscure folder I made for the EDGB roms that were named after Chinese developers or should I say Chinese names for certain games. Yeah it's pretty confusing but at the time sounded pretty funny xD

Also the chances of the EDGBA running unsupported roms is about as good enough chance for Tyrian 2000 to work on it, still to this day I await the day I can play that piece of history since my Super Card SD which was able to play it years back no longer works.

You got me curious. The Tyrian prototype runs just fine on my super old EFA Linker Flash Cart too, but not on the EDGBA. But the Vast Fame Games don't work on my EFA Linker Cart either ^^

I remember playing the Tyrian prototype on my EDGBA X5.

How it possible it always just shows the Gameboy without the advance when clicked on it, even my decrypted one I made for the Super Card SD just shows a black screen.

It could have been another game. I'm not sure.

I think I should have stated the Tyrian 2000 GBA rom, the GBC Tyrian 2000 rom works fine as it plays with goomba.

Is the game still playable at this time?

If you mean Tyrian 2000 for GBA, nope hasn't been for several years by now... likely I would have made SNES games display better on a GBA in a couple of years before someone could figure out how to get Tyrian 2000 rom to work on the GBA X5 as of now it seems to be a non important game despite it being a huge piece of history in the course of SHMUPS that came from my childhood... especially on the old MS DOS windows 90's era as it pretty much retained all sprites and objects the windows game had was an amazing feat!
