Garbage line for game list
« on: December 27, 2020, 07:52 AM »
Hello, I just bought all new hardware:
RGB-modded SNES Jr console (SNS-101 model) https://www.ebay.com/itm/174553965315
SNS-002 AC adapter
FX Pak Pro w/ 8gb sd card from Stone Age Gamer
Hyperkin scout wireless controller
SNES/NGC to HDMI converter

Every time I boot up the FX Pak Pro, I get a single line of garbage text in the games list. The garbage line scrolls itself slowly from right to left. If I press B, the entire system locks up (the clock no longer updates). I can't get the pak to load a single rom file.

I'm using an ALTTP US rom file as a test and I've tried every imaginable location for it on the SD card: in the root directory, in the sd2snes folder, in a roms folder, in a games folder. It's a single uncompressed SFC file. I have no archive files (zip or 7z) of any kind on the SD card. I've tried it in each location individually.

I've used Stone Age Gamer's FAT32 formatter utility on Windows 10 to format the SD card, and I've also tried
RidgeCrop FAT32 formatter http://ridgecrop.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm as well as Windows's built-in formatter. No change in behavior among the three formatters.

I've tried the 1.10.3 firmware, the 1.10.1 firmware, and furious's 1.10.3 firmware. They all produce the same or similar results. None of them display a correct game list.

I've tried both the 8gb card that I bought from SAG as well as a 2gb card that I had lying around.

The rest of the menu seems to function and the system information page shows what appears to be correct information. A small aside but I cannot seem to get the configuration menu to actually change any settings. I press A and move the d-pad to adjust a value but it just reverts to its previous value after pressing A.

This looks like what people got when they put the roms in the OS folder. Try again formatting to fat32 with 32K cluster size, I think, and put the roms in their own folder on root (sub-folders are ok). Use a freshly unzipped OS folder. Unzip to computer first, then copy to SD card. Don't change the theme until you got it working, the original theme should be blue, not purple like on your screenshot.

Hey thanks for replying! I know I've tried formatting with 32k vs 4k cluster sizes and it made no difference. I will try it more methodically by extracting archives pc side and copying. I can't recall every permutation of configurations I've tried so I'll try that specifically.

My 2GB SD card is too small for a 32k cluster size. The formatting tool says FAT32 must have at least 65,536 sectors. Trying with 16,384.

I did a fresh copy of the 1.10.13 vanilla firmware into the root and a 'roms' folder containing alttp us SFC rom file. Still the same result. See attached.

Did you try this following SD card which is compatable with the device?

FXPAC Pro = Kingston 64GB or Sandisk 64GB SDHC Micro A1 without the reader

No but I did try two SD cards. The firmware was able to read files on them just fine but it looks like the console itself was at fault here per the diagnostic firmware test. I've returned it and am ordering a different one.

RAM failed. It said something about A23 ERROR so maybe it was just a dirty A23 pin in the cartridge slot?
It sounds like you already returned the SNES, but if you have a similar problem again you should test normal cartridges you have as well.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just tested the same FX Pak Pro and SD card in another SNES console and it passed the test.

The old one may have had a dirty A23 connector, who knows. I've already returned it anyway. Happy that I've got a working console now!
