ED GBA X5 crashes when using Game Boy Player, every time
« on: November 04, 2020, 05:43 AM »
After having spent today, yesterday with my new GBP pulling my hair out about this, I decided I had to consult the experts.

Short Version: Game Boy Player perfectly plays real GBA cartridges but will crash when playing from the X5 in 2 minutes or less, sometimes as little as 4 seconds. Game frozen, lines across the screen, music screeching.

To elaborate: Running GBI (most recent version) through Swiss (release v0.5r927). In regards to GBI, the exact same things happen with each rom regardless of version (standard, speedrunning, high-fidelity). I have exclusively tested no-intro roms, unmodded, etc etc etc.

To try to fix the issue, I have tried the following:
  • Clean connections of GBP and ED with Qtips covered with 70% isopropyl alcohol. No changes noticed
  • Switched to a new micro SD card to see if my first one had compatibility problems. No changes
  • Reformatted both my micro SD cards with the SD Card formatter tool linked somewhere on this forum using the "overwrite format" option. No changes
  • Jiggling the cart's connection with the GBP slot in any number of orientations. No changes

The two micro SD cards I've tried to use are the Sandisk 1 GB Micro SD and Sandisk Ultra 128 GB Micro SD.

My Everdrive's rear says "Everdrive-GBA X5, Model 16, Rev.A, 30.05.2016. I bought it directly from the website.

I think this might be the most important info:
After remembering that there was a "Diagnostic" option, I tried it in and out of the GBP. In both of my GBAs and my DS, all results came back 'OK', SD RD speed = 6.2 MB/s, SD WR speed, 133.3 KB/s.

However, these are the results for the diagnostic being run on the game boy player:
Copy ram to file... OK
STB         test... OK
ROM0      test... Error: 10
ROM1      test... Error: 10
DISK       test... Error: D3
SRAM      test... Error: 1E
FLASH     test... Error: B4
EEPROM  test... Error: 0F
SD RD speed...   Error: DB
SD WR speed...  Error: F5
RTC date: 20FF/FF/FF
RTC time: 7F:FF:FF
RTC test...

Then it immediately drops into the "FPGA Reboot" screen, and stays there.

If anyone could help me, I would really appreciate it. If my ED is just defective, that sucks and I'm bummed but I'll survive, but if it's the GBP, then I have about 25 days to return it and try another one. And if it's the SD card (somehow?) I can buy another one.
Thanks in advance.

This is a long shot, but did you tried pulling the cartridge a bit after inserting it completely?

I've gone back and checked - yeah, it doesn't quite work. I've jiggled it in and out, left and right, nothing.

I've actually gone and tried a few other things - notably, I wanted to take Swiss out of the equation, so I moved all three versions of GBI onto my memory card to boot independently. The only change I noticed was that, sometimes, ROM0 or ROM1 actually succeeds the diagnostic. Everything else still fails.

Anyway, because I forgot to mention: my everdrive software says it's OS version is 1.12, and its FPGA version is 1.02. not sure how relevant that is. I went ahead and ordered a new GBP, so we'll see, but who knows what the problem is.

The "I've tried everything and am at the end of my damn rope" edit:
I have tried:
  • Multiple Gamecubes I borrowed from friends
  • A second gameboy player I wasted my damn money on
  • booting straight into GBI, skipping swiss
  • booting via both home bros (requires SD card adapter) and windwaker (straight from memory card)
  • formatting my micro SD, booting with just GBAOS, versions 1.12, 1.11, 1.10

I'm losing all hope here
I don't know what else there is to try
I've tried to find different releases of GBI, but past versions aren't available on Extrems' github, so it could be that, but the only thing left that makes sense is that my X5 is just trash and I'm the only unlucky idiot that got a defective everdrive and only found out after 3 years when it was too late to get a return. Maybe my 3 micro sd cards were all incompatible in exactly the same way.

The only light of hope was one time, where the diagnostic nearly succeeded for some reason, Error: 10 on both ROM0 and ROM1 but everything went through fine, and the games ran perfectly...but it was just one time, and I didn't do anything special, and trying to recreate it has wasted my entire night and getting nothing done at all. I'm out of ideas.

Edit 2:
Went out and wasted money on a new 32 gb micro sd, class 10, fastest one I could find.
The first time I plugged it in, I finally got a complete clean diagnostic. Hopeful, I tried one of three no-intro roms on there. Crashed within 1 minute. The other two, same deal. The only thing I can figure, unless I'm missing something, is that my everdrive must be totally defective.

This sucks.

Now try deactivating „quick boot“. And only use verified no-intro-roms for testing.

Quick boot has been off, though the diagnostic constantly failing suggests a more fundamental problem. Also, as mentioned, only CRC verified no-intro roms are being tested.

As mentioned, I was able to get duplicate fail states with not only multiple gamecubes, but game boy players. I bought another one to test, and it fails in exactly the same way. Considering both work - flawlessly! - with official cartridges, I can only surmise there is less of an easy answer at play here.

i just set up my GC with GB Player with the hopes of the Everdrive working with my set up. my set up is seemingly the same as yours... GC with GC Loader and SD2SP2 using Swiss with GBI.

i have done some searching and have yet to find a post or walkthrough of this working with this exact set up, only posts like this with the same results. i have ordered an Everdrive already, not yet shipped, so hoping this will work.

--Update--
i have heard from someone that the first version of mini's did have issues with the memory RAM. the latest revision corrected this issue and are working properly. i contacted Ever Drive to confirm and Stanslav confirmed that the one that was sent out to me today is the latest revision. it is coming from Ukraine so it may be a few weeks, will update once i have it set up and hopefully working.

I received my Everdrive mini yesterday, red christmas version, and it works flawlessly with my GB Player/GC with GC Loader/sd2sp2/Swiss/GBI. Sometimes GBI hangs on the intro 'GAME BOY' screen but a hit of the reset button and it works. GBA games play flawlessly and the limited GB and GBC roms i have used also play fine using Goomba.

Very happy!!

Bought a new Everdrive X5, sure enough, my old one was the problem. It works perfectly, except on gameboy player.
This sucks, but it really was that simple, my old one was defective. I wonder if it had anything to do with how I had to change the battery one time?

Am surprised the Goomba games worked on the GB Player but I guess this was one of the reasons why the Everdrive GBA was the ultimate flash cart that could play any game system imaginable that it was capable of, shame I never used my Gamecube much except over this period of Lockdown just mostly playing the Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection complations as well as the Namco Museum 50th Anniversary disk too...

The Gameboy Player shouldn't be any different from any other GBA system. If it doesn't work on GBPlayer, something is still wrong. Official games, hacks, homebrew or Goomba Color doesn't matter, they should all work.

I have an old Everdrive GBA with the same issue; did yours freeze and make this sound as well? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5AfG_mkNhU

Happens randomly in the menu for Donkey Kong Country 1 on both Game Boy Player, GBI, and GBA SP. I tested the actual cart to compare and that doesn't freeze at all.

I haven't done much testing beyond that but it seems like it only happens in the menu on this game for some reason? Can anyone else confirm? (I'm hoping to not replace my Everdrive)

Sounds like them old days when I tried to run PCE roms with the built in PCEAdvance emulator that was built into the Super Card SD in the 2010's and the save state would always break midway into the game causing that sound... to this day I await the day the X5 can decrypt roms that have hacks on them ^^

Going to order an Everdrive x5 mini and see if the freezing stops... looking at various forum threads in the past there's been problems before with the Everdrive and Game Boy Player for some reason. I think maybe the problem is the one I have is too old basically (it's the first revision Everdrive GBA I got through preorder back in 2016).

Though I guess maybe it is playing the lottery if the PCB isn't faulty or something when ordering a new one? Since I read it's been happening to people with revision B boards.

At the very least I know it is under warranty if this new one acts up.

Speaking of which how many games did you play on it before you ran into that issue?
