Post by: dvd2vcd on May 05, 2016, 11:24 PM
any chance of a small update so that the avenue pad 6 controller will work in the menu in 6 button mode?

if you power up the turbo everdrive while 6 button mode is enabled you cannot browse the menu system/pick rom etc

Ok, that explains why I believe it works.

The normal 2 button controllers send data over 4 lines and are polled by mode line. One mode all 4 directions are checked on 4 lines, other modes the 4 buttons are checked.  With the 6 button controllers, they are double-polled.  When it checks for button 3-6 it also checks 4 unused lines which would return all active (pressed down)

Game that are designed to check for this can check for direction, when it detects all lines are active it assumes 6 button controller is plugged in. If it does not detect, it assumes 2 button only controller.  If the game is not coded to expect that, it can get confusing result and try to pass 4 controller directions. Games like Bomberman can spazz out.

It is possible that TED is getting hung up on controller data because it powered on with 6 button mode screwing the expected controller data.  A minor bug fix could be to check the controller ojn power on and when it detects all 4 direction are active, treat it as 6 button controller rather than getting stuck doing nothing.

Do you think this issue will be able to be corrected with a software update or would a hardware update most likely be necessary? I am asking this because I was about ready to order several of the latest turbo ever drives.

Thanks for any input on this,

Yes this is a simple fix in the controller reading of the TED's menu program that krikzz could do.

For now just set the 2/6 button switch, that all 6 button controllers have, to 2. That's the reason they have that switch, so it can be used with games not programmed for it.

If the fix is as simple as setting the controller's switch then I don't think Krikzz would bother.

Just got an Avenue Pad 6. There's an A/B switch that you'll want to have on A when you are on the ED menu. Then in game you can switch it to B and it's good to go. I tested it on SFII CE and worked like a charm.

The A/B switch is probably the 2/6 button switch. The exact name of the two modes may be different on different controllers but they all works the same way.

Confirmed, A = 2 and B = 6
