Title: Transferpak mod and Loader-App

hi,
before it's getting lost in the transfer pak  thread. here is a little howto, if you really need to get this running. ^^

the transfer pak is screwed together with four security screws, but i just used a little screwdriver and slightly forced it outwards while screwing. removing them wasn't a problem at all.

if you release the cover you will notice the little daughter-board on the left side, it's a 3.3v to 5v step up regulator to power the cartridge.

on the 3.3v input side are three pins 3.3v (left), ground (middle) and a control pin (right).
the 5v output is activated, if the control pin is set high (3.3v) from the LESH-NUS.
bridging it to the 3.3v input pin on the left, will result in a permanent 5v output.
It would be even better to solder a switch, so you could set it back for retail carts! :D
you may want to cut the trace to the chip or lift the pin, if you are concerned about damaging it. ^^

now you are ready to install the loader app to your sdcard.

example:
- put your edgb into your gameboy and start 'pokemon red'
- create a new savegame
- now just power off your gameboy
- put your edgb into the transferpak (controller port 1)
- power on the n64 with the ed64
- start the edgb_loader.z64 rom
- select mapper 3 for pokemon red (it should return to the menu)
- now start pokemon stadium

sure ^^
but you can always use a unmodified transferpak with a retail cartridge in all the other controllers.
beside that retails cart should still work, but keep in mind the game is now unnable to poweroff the cart on a modified TP!
Instead of just connecting these two pins, it could be handy to solder a switch instead. ^^

i think it's no big deal.
on the super gameboy the cart is under power the whole time, too.
but you shouldn't change carts as long as the n64 is running, even if the game says it is ready to switch (if it can't power off).
this system is for kids and very rugged, you could power off the n64 at any time (but not if it is writing to the cart-ram atm! ^^).

Is the TP-mod necessary for all games, or is it only for PKMN Stadium? Just tried it briefly this morning, but couldn't get Mario Golf to work.

mario golf is resetting the cart right after the first TP-access.
but i was able to copy a character without the mod. ^^

Did the mod today and made some testing :)

Pokemon blue on Pokemon Stadium - Works very well
Mario Golf Retail on Mario Golf 64 - Works
Mario Golf with MBC5 - Didn't work (said something about the TP connection. Made multiple try's)
Mario Tennis with MBC5 - Didn't work either

Can it be something with the savegames?

someone told me, that mario golf pal was working for him and pokemon not...
so we have to figure out, if it's just a game-version issue or a technical one. ^^

today i added transferpak support in mupen64plus to get more debug abilities. :D

i really don't get it atm. stupid mario golf. ^^

what i have tried in between...
-> dumping the cartridge savegame/rom and boot it with an emulator -> working on the emulator, so there is no version conflict
-> holding the cartridge externally alive and switching the n64 off and on -> dumping works - mario golf not

mario golf europe checks for the europe gameboy game and the us for the us one,
there is even a msg at the status option, which tells you, if it doesn't like the cartridge
the savegame seems not to be region locked at all


beside that, i'm pretty sure i have already successfully dumped a character once, i even wrote it in the libgbpak thread. :D
and on irc someone told me, that mario golf is working for him and pokemon stadium not. :>

any ideas? :D

hi,

i did some tests, so if you are getting the same ideas you don't have to test them again.

my idea was, that the tp is able to check if the cartridge is already powered or not.

so I searched the 5v plane for connections with the LESH-NUS and found out, that there are 3 connections.
i was hoping, that one of them is a sense pin, but it seams like they are just 3 vcc input pins, they are all connected inside the ic.
i lifted them and connected them to the 3.3v enable signal for the step up circuit, so they are only powered if the tp wants to power the cart, but nothing changed.


my next idea was, that it is checking for a reset state or something.

i powered the cartridge itself externally, set it to game mode, shut off the n64 and even reconnected the controller.
guess what.. it didn't work. ^^
(maybe i hold the les-nus state powered from the cartridge side)


i could monitor all tp comamnds with my modded mupen64 emulator and retry them on real hardware, to look for the diffs in the response packages.
but even if the real tp reacts in a different way, the solution would be still rom patching only. :/


i'm getting out of ideas, maybe i'm not the right person to dig into that any further. ^^

Hey guys, this seems like a really exciting concept to me, but to be frank, I don't fully understand exactly how and what it does?!

Namely, I'm unclear as to how the modded transfer pack starts up and selects the game. From what I gather, you load the loader ROM from your SD card in your ED64 directory? Do you need to load a patched version of Pokemon Stadium to then play a Pokemon ROM from your EDGB in the Transfer Pak, or does the Loader App circumvent this? By what method then do you select a particular Transfer Pak compatible ROM from another, say Pokemon Yellow one time, and Pokemon Crystal the next?

Any clarification into how this works would be appreciated, because I'm interested in Playing Pokemon Yellow via my EDGB in the Transfer Pak, inserted into a N64 running my ED64. Is this at all possible; that is, to not have to buy a copy of Pokemon Stadium, or the Pokemon games, but instead use my EDGB and ED64 with this Transfer Pak mod?

the loader app sets the EDGB into "game mode", actually it does the same like if you hold start on your gameboy.
the mod on the other side, just prevents the EDGB to fall back into "menu mode", by holding up the voltage to EDGB.
this is needed, 'cause pokemon stadium turns off the cart after the first reading.

with a patched rom, you wouldn't need the mod anylonger but you will still need the loader app.
(ok, maybe you could patch the loader app functionality into the rom, too... different story)

i don't know why i have decided that you have to select the mapper manually, this looks a bit unnecessary now. :>

long term short.
1. no patched rom needed
2. TP Mod + loader app + ED64 (pokemon stadium rom) + EDGB (Pokemon yellow rom) should work. ^^

Thanks for the response, Saturnu, I have a somewhat greater understanding now. I still have a few questions however:

1. From where do you start the loader app? Is it as soon as you boot the ED64 with the EDGB in the Transfer Pak, or is it after selecting from the ED64 Pokemon Stadium ROM?

2. Do you just place the Loader ROM, or the entire folder on the ED64?

3. How are saves handled? Say I want to play Pokemon Yellow from the EDGB via the Transfer Pak loader on the ED64 with a Pokemon Stadium ROM, when and how do I save my game?

4. How do I then turn off everything (EDGB, N64 with ED64 running Pokemon Stadium) to ensure it saves?

5. What exactly are the choices when you want to select a game with the Loader App? Which games do the different mappers correspond to?

1+2:
- the location on the sdcard doesn't matter, you start it like a normal game
- after selecting the mapper it goes back to the ed64 menu
- now the edgb is initialized and you could start the pokemon stadium rom
 (there is an example in the first post)

3. i don't know much about pokemon stadium, but the savegame is altered on your edgb sram and the edgb will save it to the sdcard, before you flash a new game to the eeprom.

4. PS has some save warnings while playing, you could power off the n64 afterwards at any time.

5. i can't remember some are mbc3 some mbc5

Would it be possible to play on a non modified transfer pak by only having one game on the cart?
With my EMS SmartCard, if you only write one game to the cart's flash memory, that's what the transfer pak picks up. Problem is I'm getting ramdom errors with Pokemon and I think it's because the Smart Card doesn't support MBC3 so I was wondering if I could use an Everdrive the same way I use my Smart Card.

Hey there

I tried using gb64_v06_beta_cam_write.zip to back up my Gameboy camera SRAM, but the tool always tells me I need to check the connection. Other Gameboy games work fine, do I need to bridge the connections for the GB camera as well?

no it should work without a modification.
try to clean the contacts with some isopropyl alcohol. ^^

Well, actually  cleaning the contacts didn't help, but I got it to work. I have to run the GB64.z64 file once, it'll then tell me to check the connection. I then have to press reset and run the program a second time and then it'll recognize the camera.

Do you know what could be causing this issue?

EDIT: I mean, it's not a big issue, now I know. But it'd be interesting to know what's causing this.

I assume there is no way we can use this with retail versions of Pokemon Stadium, correct? I am asking because I have an EDGB 2.5 and Pokemon Stadium 2 always crashes when entering the main menu because of ED64 corrupting the last 128(?) kb of the game rom.

in theory, you could put two aa batteries in series (~3v) in parallel to the input side of the step up circuit while swapping the cartridge. :>
or you could ask krikzz if he is going to implement a splitted FlashRAM mapper für PokeStdm2, which is putting the savegame to a few free locations inside the rom. ^^

OK, maybe I just am too stupid to understand the howto, but... Which wires should I connect now with which? First I understood to use one of the one on the 3.3V side (red) and connect it to 5V (yellow), then I understood that both red have to be connected to 5V and now I think I just need to connect the two red ones.. The further I progresses this post, the less sure I was I am right with my assumption ^^ HAAAALP! :D

Hm, nope. I use your loader for controller Port 1 pushing B for MBC3, load "Pokemon - Gelbe Edition - Special Pikachu Edition (Germany) (GBC,SGB Enhanced)" or "Pokemon - Rote Edition (Germany) (SGB Enhanced)". Yellow has a save state I loaded from my real cart, red has none. Both work on the EDGB in a Gameboy Advance SP, including the save state and are detected as the right game in "Pokemon Stadium (Germany)" and "Pokemon Stadium 2 (Germany)", but with no save state found according to the game. (All ? ? ? ? ? ? ?) If I try the GB Tower or load Pokemon into a fight, both abort with a error screen to check my connection on the transfer pack. Ideas?

i just couldn't find the right locations to patch them. :D

this was happening to me just earlier actually. Turns out the gameboy camera was heavy enough to create a small connection gap between the transferpak and the controller while the transferpak locked in place. I had to hold the back of the transferpak in place (Pressed to the controller) from the time GB64 is launched - until after the sram dump finishes. Hope this helps  ;)

This is a funny little story.  I just got into playing harvest moon gb on my backlit dmg I recently made and I somehow got the idea about it having a RTC with the harvest sprites so I looked it up on google and clicked a few links.  Turns out it does have a limited RTC using a crystal oscillator which I had learned about previously on reading up on the dmg clock mods.

shows the transfer pak which I actually got bundled with my n64 last year to work with my ed64.  The link to this very thread is linked in that review lol.  So after reading saturnu's first post on this thread I had a few questions but I decided to read the thread instead and sure enough the same questions were asked and answered and I have to say that I'm impressed with how Saturnu has handled it.  I personally get frustrated when people ask the same questions that have been answered even on the same page lol so it really impressed me how he handled it.
Anyways I'd love to mod my TP and unlock the stuff for perfect dark! The switch is a good idea too.

it sets it into game mode, so the game isn't reading out just the menu.

But the flashcart that I put in the link load a firmware, supports micro SD like the EDGB...

It´s not like EMS Smart Card, Smart Boy Cart or Bleep Bloop, that if you put ONLY one game on the flashcart, this load the game like a retail cartridge.

Somehow, my EDGB doesn´t work on the ED64...

When I select MBC5, it doesn´t restart to the menu.

try to push reset. ^^
the edgb should keep the mapper setting anyway, until a complete power cycle.

That´s what happen when you select MBC5 or MBC3 with a Pokemon Red loaded in the EDGB.

This happen also when you try to exit pressing Z.

I don´t know if this sometime happened to somebody here, to be honest.

Any idea?

One question: is it possible to make it work without modifying the Transfer Pak? (I mean, in games like PKMS it's unlikely to make it work without a TP mod).

Eine Frage: ist es möglich, dass es ohne TP mod läuft? (ich meine, in Spiele wie PKMS, ist es unwahrscheinlich, dass es ohne TP mod läuft).

sure, with heavy game patching, it should be possible.
but if this would be an easy task for me, i would have came up with this in the first place. ^^

learn about mips/n64 game patching and give it a try. maybe you are more lucky than me. ^^

Hi.

I have got an EDGBv1.

I tested it with the loader app and I tried it with the GB64, and it seems to work since it showed the POKEMON RED title.

But when I tried with PKMS2 it gives me an error at startup.

Is it necessary to mod the TP in order to work?

We tested it thousands of times and it didn't work, because EDGBX use PSRAM instead of FLASH (that's why you can't start last game immediately). He have also tested writing a ROM back to the cartspace before loading a game with libgbpak, but with no results.

Of course, if saturnu or someone who knows about libgbpak had an EDGB X he could probably find out what's the problem by debugging...

Hi guys,

has anyone of you managed successfully to load pokemons from a Pokemon version (red,blue,yellow/ silver,gold) on the Everdrive GBX7 into Pokemon Stadium 1/2 on the Everdrive 64? I don‘t mean playing the Gameboy games using the built-in emulator. I mean having the Pokemons available for battles in Pokemon Stadium? If yes, could you please tell me how you did it step by step? I would be grateful:-) After reading all comments, it was not clear to me if someone managed to accomplish this, given that it may be required to modify Pokemon Stadium itself. This is because Pokemon Stadium does not know how to handle the GBX7’s menu etc.

Hi Exorbitant87. It's not currently working with the EDGB X3/X5/X7, only the original EDGB (which is no longer for sale).
