Well, my GBA Everdrive decided to stop living
« on: May 18, 2021, 05:48 PM »
EDIT: Now I'm aware KRIKZZ is in vacation, I'll wait until he returns or contact his team to check for options.

Now that Everdrives have been in the market for several years, I wonder if this is going to become a trend. I have owned 5 of them (SNES, PC Engine, Genesis, GBA and GB), and two of them have kicked the bucket (SNES after 2 years and GBA after 4). For contrast, I had an original Power Pak for almost 10 years which I use constantly and it works like the first day. Also my 64drive (since release) and Harmony Cart (for more than 6 years probably) are all well and good.

Good thing I could get my money back for the SNES one under my AMEX Extended Warranty, and got a SD2SNES instead. The GBA unfortunately is beyond that option...

AMMENDED, AWAITING UNTIL KRIKZZ OR HIS TEAM GET BACK TO ME DUE TO VACATION.

Krikzz, my man, I hope you can check on this stuff, because 2 out of 5 is a bad failure rate (though I'm a single customer, maybe I'm too unlucky?).

EDIT: I had not abused or damaged the cart, I also installed a fresh new battery and tried it in two different devices where it previously worked. It's the Everdrive that stopped working.

all everdrive have life time warranty for free repair if component parts still available

no need calling credit card company that just annoys seller

if you bought them at stoneagegamer just contact them first about your device stopped working or is not working properly

WIth the SNES one I applied for Extended Warranty, the seller did not have to reimburse, it was AMEX that gave me the refund. No dispute or chargeback involved.

Neither with the present case. 4 years is beyond Stone Age Gamer's and AMEX policy, I get that. I'm just not happy that this Everdrive only lasted 4 years while other Flash Carts have lasted longer and still working. Powerpak has a 5 year warranty even, so if it was that one I'd still be able to get a free replacement. I'm just saying that after spending 600-700 dllrs in Everdrives I'm starting to worry that more of them will start failing, and that I will look elsewhere for new flash carts.

EDIT: Stone Age only gives 1 year, 2 if you purchase their extended warranty plan. I wrote Krikzz about the issue by DM several days ago but got no response.

I work for AMEX, and no, refund money for insurance benefits don't come from merchant's pocket, because I am admittedly out of the merchant's terms. Stone Age even helped me file my insurance claim ;) . No harm to them for using AMEX extended warranty (as AMEX employee, and also user, I recommend you get any of our cards, even the no fee ones have it).

Thanks for the info, I'll check what's best in my case, I didn't know Krikzz was in vacation and not checking PMs. AFAIK though, Stone Age won't help unless it's within warranty (that happened with the SNES one, I contacted them and they could'nt offer a replacement or free repair). I did not contact Krikzz back then because I handled it through AMEX insurance.

I recommend next time you get the next one just use the preloaded emulators instead of the GBA roms.

It's a tough pill to swallow when the device was meant to be bought for the soul purpose of playing the entire library of GBA roms but is it really worth burning the battery out just to play every game in the line up?

Emulator roms take up no battery usage at all and you can even play SNES roms on it along with other roms of other formats... I know many are going to say that isn't the reason of owning one to play stuff that isn't related to the device that it was made for.

But what alternatives do you really have, the Flash EZ or Super Card SD all run GBA roms without draining the battery in them making them last for life, the GBA everdrives always has an issue due to power and all so it's a good lesson to learn from to not make the same mistake again.

As of why the GBA everdrives battery gets used up loading its own roms of GBA is hard to tell, I was able to check all GB roms on a GB Everdrive and the battery never ran out to see which ones worked and didn't, this means checking lots of PD and fan made games too but I fear to go through more than 3 GBA roms incase the same thing happens.

As for my still usable GBA everdrive that had a loose screw that then later got a crack in it when it was repaired by an official maker it still works to this day and has only ran approx 3 GBA roms in total on it, if I recall they would be Digimon Racer, Phlanx and GBA Videos and to this day it's never burnt out, it has tried a mass amount of NES, SNES, Game Gear, Master System, Neo Geo and Gameboy roms and has had no issues with them so likely a mix is a better way to preserve the battery life on the device.

But I changed the battery and it's still dead. It lasted 4 years.

I may be wrong but depending on the soldering quality, which may vary, surface mount chips may fail due to flex pressure.

The only thing that may save it is to try reflow the chips.

I recommend next time you get the next one just use the preloaded emulators instead of the GBA roms.

I'd imagine that most sane people who buy a GBA flash cart do so in order to play GBA games.

Your fetish for barely functional emulators is getting out of hand.
