EverDrive N8 / Re: USB Tool on GNU/Linux?
« on: April 30, 2016, 03:47 AM »
I've compiled it with Mono; source code is unmodified from Krikzz's original:

You will need to install at least the Mono runtime in order to run it. No special drivers were needed for me. As far as I know it communicates like a regular USB-connected serial port.

It works in my front loader NES. If I try very hard, I can plug in a cable while the cart is down. My USB port install may not be perfect, as I installed the FR245RL and USB port myself.

Until full VRC7 sound emulation is in, it might be easy to throw together something that will at least play some square or sine waves of the appropriate pitch, implementing only the carrier. It would let you at least enjoy the tunes a little bit...

The GB Boy's main flaws besides the sound are that the screen is the wrong resolution, is the wrong aspect ratio, AND is an RGBG pentile-type display.

I got it working fine on OS V13 and the latest copy of the mapper. It does not sound perfect compared to the original (I think the nonlinear amplitude curve of the original chip is hard to duplicate) but it is very close and much better than having nothing.

There's always the old-school reset RC-circuit-with-comparator. Better than nothing as a hotfix.

VERY excited to get home and give this a try soon. I have my Gimmick-audio-native NES controllable with a switch, so I can compare outputs immediately for you and let you know how things sound.

Ufouria/Hebereke should either just work or just not work - it does not use Sunsoft 5B audio at all, so this won't change how that game sounds.

Specifically, this looks like bit 3 is stuck to '1' for tile selection. Is that PPU A6? The way "Error" is becoming "Evvov" suggests that the third bit is stuck. I am 99% sure this is a contact problem.

I don't think this is an incompatibility, it just looks like one or more CHR address lines are not working correctly. This may be a physical contact incompatibility, but not electrical. The product (from what I understand) is simply a cartridge slot replacement.

EverDrive N8 / How to get Sunsoft 5B Audio with the Everdrive N8
« on: August 20, 2015, 08:26 PM »
In another thread I was lamenting the lack of Mapper 69 audio support on the Everdrive N8. I thought I should share my solution to fully enjoy Gimmick! with audio, which I did last night:

In short, the solution has the YM2149 sound chip integrated inside the NES itself, so no modifications to the cramped Everdrive need to be done.

You can hear how it sounds in this video:

I think I have a solution for this problem. I will post about it soon.

I just tested Gimmick! with my EDN8 and Japanese Famicom and all is working fine, including sound :)
No, that's not right. The game will make some sounds, but many are missing, including most sound effects (jump, star toss) and many parts of the music as well. Two square wave channels are inaudible.

EverDrive N8 / Re: Gimmick / Sunsoft 5B Audio?

I wonder if MMC5 audio has been implemented at all. If that's the case, MMC5's PRG mode 3 has the same capabilities of the Sunsoft 5B/5A/FME-7's PRG bankswitching. CHR Mode 3 is more or less the same as the Sunsoft scheme too. A mapper hack to MMC5 might be a good project...

EDIT: Never mind, MMC5 audio is not implemented either, though that is a little more understandable...

EverDrive N8 / Gimmick / Sunsoft 5B Audio?
« on: July 24, 2015, 09:27 AM »
It's 2015 and the Everdrive N8 still doesn't support the expansion audio to give Gimmick! its full soundtrack. This isn't a question, rather just voicing interest in full Sunsoft 5B mapper support.

You doesn't remove chip with games: simply cut Vcc line (usually pin1); if dont't work you can bridge again line.

no no, that's not okay! Leave VCC connected, and just tie /CE to VCC to disable the chip (tristate all I/O).
