Off Topic / Where to find PC Engine controllers?
« on: August 25, 2015, 02:12 PM »
These things seem to be hard to pin down on eBay. Not Turbografx controllers, but the Japanese PC Engine ones. Original white preferred.

Off Topic / PAL NES unusually slow?
« on: July 01, 2015, 12:14 AM »
Hey all,

So I just got a PAL NES (I'm in the UK) and what better game to test it with than the original Super Mario Bros found on eBay.

Fired it up, all looking good, except the gameplay is slow. Like, really slow. Like, slower than I remember PAL being. The music is painfully bad especially.

I've checked the game - pins are pristine. The NES is a UK PAL machine, and the game is PAL-A (UK, Italy). Power supply is third party but supplies the requisite 9V.

What's causing this? Were some versions of the game slower than others? Could bad contacts on the NES's ZIF be to blame? Or the PSU?

I was so excited to complete my Nintendo collection as well...:(

Off Topic / Recommended PC Engine combination?
« on: March 23, 2015, 12:35 PM »
Hey all,

So I'm toying with saving up money for a PC Engine, CD-ROM, and Turbo Everdrive. What combination do you recommend? I'm in PAL-Land, so will likely have to RGB-mod it.

1) Original PC Engine, with PC CD-Rom2 connected via IFU
1a) As above, but with a CoreGrafx (which I understand has an AV attachment)

2) Original PC Engine, with Super CD-ROM
2a) As above, but with a CoreGrafx

3) Turboduo/PC Engine Duo/Duo R

4) SuperGrafx?

Oh, I already acquired an Arcade Card v3, so that should handle most of the games, right?

Off Topic / Dreamcast VGA to HDMI converter?
« on: January 08, 2015, 03:25 PM »
What ho gamer types,

I have a Dreamcast, and a VGA box, but for some reason my TV can't see the signal through the VGA port. So I thought using the HDMI would be better.

Can anyone recommend a good value one? I'm not made of money so if anyone's found one that was surprisingly effective for the price, I'd be most grateful :)

Mega EverDrive / Everdrive and Mega CD
« on: December 19, 2014, 12:38 PM »
So I got a working Mega CD :D it powers up, and can read at least music CDs, I will get some games soon. The mixing cable seems to be a dud, but no biggy. So I now have a Tower of Power :)

However, the blasted thing won't let the Everdrive work. When I put it in the 32X, the licensing information comes up and then it goes to black. Any way round this?

FXPAK (SD2SNES) / Enhanced games on PAL SNES
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:13 AM »
Hey all.

Assuming that someday in the future all the enhancement chips the SNES was famous for get simulated in the SD2SNES, will this make every game work on both PAL and NTSC machines?

I am thinking here in particular about NTSC exclusives like Super Mario RPG and Super Street Fighter Alpha, which apparently can't work on PAL machines even if they've been 60Hz modded...right?

Mega EverDrive / 32X and save states
« on: September 16, 2014, 02:15 PM »
So what is it about the 32X that prevents the in-game menu and the save states from working?

Is it a feature that could eventually be restored to the 32X?

Loving both my MED and the 32X, but find it a shame I can't use save states for any game while the 32X is plugged in :)

Mega EverDrive / 32X pass-through
« on: August 20, 2014, 11:30 AM »
Picked up a 32X :) it's a little beaten up but I was assured it works, and I got it cheaper than I've seen elsewhere so I decided to take the plunge.

It has no power or patch cables though.

If I stuck this into my Mega Drive, would it still function as a pass-through for Mega Drive games? Or does it still require power and the cable for that?

Ta much :)

EverDrive N8 / Holoreg Game Key?
« on: July 07, 2014, 04:07 PM »
Hey all, being in PAL-Land with a naff TV I am conscious that there were many awesome US/Japanese exclusive games that are denied me through the NES not being 50/60Hz moddable. So I discovered the Holoreg Game Key, which claims to make US games function on a PAL Nes.

Would this be worth buying in conjunction with an Everdrive N8, or would its compatibility be no better than what the Everdrive does by itself?

Thanks chaps :)

Mega EverDrive / SMS mode screen glitch
« on: May 22, 2014, 01:33 AM »
Hi folks,

My new Mega ED arrived today :) As soon as I got home I plugged it in. A few issues at first as the ED seemed to erase the MEGA folder each time I turned on and it would say the MEGA folder doesn't exist. It didn't happen once I'd switched to 60Hz mode. *shrug*

Anyway, I loaded Sonic the Hedgehog which worked great. I then loaded the SMS version of Sonic, which seemed absolutely fine except that every 20 seconds or so, something suddenly happens to the screen. Difficult to describe, but kind of the image squeezes vertically very suddenly and goes black and red, jumps to the right, then returns to normal. All in within three quarters of a second.

It doesn't sound like a Mega ED thing but maybe my Mega Drive's SMS mode is faulty? As I said it doesn't happen on Sonic for the MD.

I haven't had a chance to test any other games yet though, maybe I should do that.

It's a Mega Everdrive off Retrogate. So excited!

EverDrive N8 / List of NTSC games incompatible on PAL NES
« on: March 19, 2014, 03:00 PM »
I am aware that the NES cannot be modded to switch between 50hz and 60hz, unlike, say, the Mega Drive or the SNES, or the Master System.

I understand however that many games designed for, say, the US, can and do run just fine on a PAL NES due to how the game interacts with the NES CPU and PPU. But others have graphical glitches and/or sound issues.

Has anyone produced a list of what games do what? Would be useful perhaps if one could be produced here. Perhaps people could post games they have tried it on? :)

Off Topic / Decluttering tips megathread!
« on: March 06, 2014, 06:20 PM »
Hey everybody :) I wonder how you fellows get a handle with all the games, consoles, controllers, power cables and whatnot that our hobby inevitably builds up? Anyone got any stylish/clever ideas out there?

I haven’t got any off the top of my head but I’m looking to store all my controllers in a nice, decorative way, maybe to show off one of each kind from each console, while making them easy to grab and plug in.

Turbo EverDrive / UK user - is it worth me getting a Turbografx?
« on: November 11, 2013, 06:49 PM »
So I'm hooked on getting all the consoles that good old Krikzz provides Everdrives for, but I'm unsure about the Turbografx. First of all, being a Brit, we never got the machine, although there are PAL versions on eBay. But the main thing that makes me hesitate is that the Wikipedia list of Turbografx games is quite small - only 100 or so huCard games! There are of course the CD games as well, but I understand they are a mixed bag in terms of quality.

So, is it worth me getting one, bearing in mind I'd seek out the console and the CD-ROM drive, if I won't be getting much return on the money I've spent (console + CD-ROM + Everdrive will be a fair bit of cash)?

If I were to go for one, what would you all recommend? A PAL one modded for RGB and multi-region (which is even more expensive!) or a US one? Or how about a PC-Engine?

What about Turbo-Duo and all those derivatives - nice, but even pricier, do I get any more games out of them?

Thanks folks :)

Mega EverDrive / NTSC roms on PAL TV
« on: October 23, 2013, 11:19 AM »
Hey folks, me again, I hope my questions aren't becoming too annoying :)

Just curious, I have an Everdrive 64 already and you may be aware that I've been defeated by my Toshiba TV which makes NTSC games on my PAL N64 go a bit squiffy due to the N64 sending signals the TV can't quite latch on to.

1) Will this problem persist with the Mega Drive (or NES/MS/SNES for that matter)? If I got an Everdrive for my PAL MD and played an NTSC game, will I have colour/image problems? I've scanned this forum for similar complaints by others and nothing shows, which encourages me.

2) Otherwise, do you think it's worthwhile getting a modified MD/SNES with a 50/60Hz switch? I'm not bothered by increasing game speed and enlarging the imaging, just about maximising compatibility.

3) If I did mod the MD, how does this affect the 32X? One advantage is (I believe) that doing so would make a Genesis 32X work on my PAL MD (they are considerably cheaper than PAL 32Xs!), but I also understand some 32X games don't run with the 60Hz turned on. Thoughts?

Thanks for your help :)
