Original N8 black screen on boot
« on: March 06, 2021, 07:13 AM »
I just got an original N8 from Stone Age Gamer in the mail today that is giving me a black screen on boot. I'm using a Retron 3 HD but I've seen videos of it working on YouTube, and the same console plays my Mega Everdrive X3 and Everdrive GB X3 (in a Super Game Boy) just fine. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with original hardware for me to test it in. I've tried all the troubleshooting steps I could find from other SD cards (the issue persists even without one, it's my understanding I should get some kind of screen saying there is no SD card?), I tried an iPad charging adaptor as I've read that if the power supply is too weak it won't work, I've tried pressing reset 5-7 times, I've tried with the region switch in both PAL and NTSC, and I've tried taking out the carts in the other slots. The only official NES game I have is Mega Man 3, and that works with no issues.

I'm hoping there is something I'm overlooking that someone here can help me with before I return this, since everything I'm seeing (Mad Little Pixel even replied to me trying to help me out since he is one of the people showing that it works) says it should work. Thanks.

I guess I’m buying an NES then. I was hoping to hold off until I could afford a modded one, but oh well.

Edit: So it works like a champ in an actual NES, but despite seeing others use one in their Retrons mine just doesn't do it. It's definitely a matter of power, the green light lit up bright enough to shine through the plastic in actual hardware but doesn't come on at all in the clone (I took it out of the shell to make sure it wasn't just dim). I guess it doesn't matter now that I have an NES but its definitely inconsistent compatibility on the Retron's part, I don't blame the Everdrive at all since it's specifically advertised as not compatible.

Why do you need to mod it? Just throw away the retron and use an original NES. That's what the Everdrive was designed for.

My n8 works great in a retroport nes adapter that is region free.
