EverDrive N8 / Re: Switching Famicom Disk Sides On EverDrive N8
« on: April 07, 2013, 02:34 PM »
I've been wondering this too. Some FDS games like Zelda and Doki Doki Panic doesn't start with the start button but by switching to side B. If you want to see the intro you don't want the ED-N8 to switch sides until to intro is done.

Another thing I've been wondering about is multi-disk games. The PowerPak doesn't support these games but I haven't seen anyone saying that the ED-N8 supports it.

If not I rather just use FDSloadr for FDS roms, then I'll get authentic sound too.

You can't. How would you get the editor out from the Expansion kit?

Also I saw somewhere online that the ED64 was incompatible with the 64DD (ie. you can't link an F-Zero X rom loaded on the ED64 with the Expansion kit). It may or may not be fixable but Krikzz doesn't have a 64DD so he can't test it.

Actually it's down to the TV AND the console. Some NTSC consoles can play both regions and some can't, same with PAL consoles. Read around this forum, it has been discussed numerous times. If you want to be sure to be able to play NTSC get the NTSC version and vice versa.

But playing on the good old DMG also has its benefits. The sound chip is quite different which is why chip musicians often prefer it for LSDJ. Also there's a special feeling of playing a game on that screen were everything becomes blurry whenever the screen is scrolling. ;)

You are absolutely right but this isn't about the CIC it's about the consoles. The console you use also plays a part in this which I'm a first hand witness of. For example my Japanese N64 can't play PAL games in color while my PAL N64 can play games of both regions perfectly fine. However my friend's PAL N64 can only play PAL in color. I heard some NTSC N64s also can play PAL in color but not mine apparently.

What's weird though is that my RBG modded NTSC N64 can of course play PAL games in color with an RGB cable but the picture is way off center and there are thick blind-like scanlines all over the screen.

Since your NTSC system can display PAL with RGB and your PAL seems to support NTSC games, you could really take either one. I would go with NTSC since your NTSC is RGB modded and there are far more NTSC games than PAL games and the NTSC version is generally the recommended version to play except for Rareware games. That is if there should be any trouble with out of region games. Also since you have a passport you could probably just use it to play the ED64 on your PAL machine if you have problems with certain games.

If you do get problems you can look into using a PAL/NTSC converter, but you will have to use the AV cable with those.

EverDrive 64 / Re: Possible iQue Menu Selection for ED64?
« on: March 25, 2013, 12:01 PM »
I don't really get what you mean. You want to see an OS menu for the ED64 that looks like the iQue menu with icons for each game? Only a few games was released for the iQue so there's not nearly enough icons for that. What good would it be to dump it for this project?

The menu looks good though, with the icons for A and B buttons and all that.
Going back to the menu without resetting is impossible on the ED64 and the reason has been explained many times.

if you already had a powerpak and wanted to "upgrade" it (like me ) with an everdrive N8

you will find the product is no better, and you have wasted your money

even if  that's many , many years after the first one was built!
If you bought the N8 and hoped it would be a much better product than the Power Pak, you have only yourself to blame for not researching the N8's features first. It's not like they are secret or anything. Krikzz seems to be hard at work at it and it's already about on par with the Power Pak according to the compatibility chart and still much cheaper so the future for N8 looks bright.

Personally I'm waiting for MMC5 and some other official mappers before I get mine.

In your opinion maybe. In my opinion they are all more interesting than the Jag. Not saying I would never buy a Jag though.

The problem isn't narrow-mindedness. There's just so many other non-Nintendo/Sega systems I would buy before I would buy a Jaguar. Like Wonderswan, Neo Geo Pocket Color, PSP, MSX2, Sharp X68000 and more.

You're making good points. There's always a point in making a flash cart to a console if it's possible no matter how obscure it is.

That said, all consoles has rare games and I personally would prefer if the IMO best consoles like Gameboy and Neo Geo would be covered first. Though I heard Neo Geo could be tricky.

at least theres sumat decent for gb/gbc at the mo (64m usb smart card is a proper flash cart) so what if its not sd but its excellent for what it is and for the price, as for RTC its gonna have to be a dream (ED64 could have done with one for animal forest) i voted the jag cos theres no PROPER flash cart for it (dont even mention skunk cos its a piece of trash and not worth the mention)
SD isn't so important but compatibility is. Many GBA flash carts had RTC and even SD2SNES has one even though there's only like one game that uses it. N64 is a smaller market so one RTC game might not be enough.
There's at least one flash cart for GB/GBC with RTC but its production has stopped long ago and now it's next to impossible to find.

i don't think RTC is necessary for gb/gbc everdrive. afaik it is mainly used in pokemon gold/silver/crystal not much with anything else.

again rumble might be hard.

also compability with N64 transfer pak is hard. the everdrive must be able to stop the multimenu running for achieving that.
RTC is used for Harvest Moon GB as well. Besides I think Pokemon is reason enough.

Rumble is just a matter of space and cost.

For the N64 transfer pak it could be possible if there's an option to boot into a game directly and skipping the menu or something.

Unlike Famicom/NES there won't be a mapper hell because there's not so many mappers for GB/GBC.

Here's all mappers the KiGB emulator supports: MBC1, MBC2, MBC3, MBC5, MBC6, MBC7, HuC1, HuC3, Rocket and MMM01. A Real Time Clock is needed for MBC2 though and there's more than just one game that needs it. Then there's some games that has a built-in rumble pak and at least one game (Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble) that has an accelerometer in the cartridge. The Real Time Clock is probably more important however.

I voted for GB/GBC because it's the biggest console with tons of great games that there's still no good flash cart with SD card support yet. Besides I want to play it in a Super Gameboy and N64 Transfer Pak with Everdrive 64.

Yes, there are other games that saves with the keyboard as well though. But Family BASIC is of course the main reason to have a keyboard.

EverDrive N8 / Re: N8 & ENIO project
« on: March 13, 2013, 02:49 PM »
Family BASIC does not work with the N8. You would need the actual cartridge to use it unless KRIKzz implements the proper mapper support which will be rather complicated since it uses mapper 0 and likely KRIKzz did not include support for PRG RAM on mapper 0 since Family BASIC is the only game on the mapper that does AFAIK
I think there was a patch that converts Family BASIC to VRC7 mapper among other things. You'll have to google it though. We'll have to wait for VRC7 support as well.

You can still use the Family Keyboard for games like Excitebike to save your tracks in DESIGN mode.
