Hi,

I recently received my Turbo Everdrive v2.5 for use in a jap PCE Duo-R (with RGB mod). I have two questions:

1 - When I connect the PCE I get a purple (or yellow) frozen screen. I have read that it can happen. Most of the time, when I hit the TE switch a couple of times I get it to start. Also, if I reset, the colored screen reappears and I have to repeat the process to return to the menu.

Is there a way to avoid having to press the switch each time to make it work?

2- Every time I try to load the Street Fighter 2 rom it seems to work but the graphics are a mess (glitches everywhere xD). This rom is supposed to work fine on TE v2. What could be the problem? I have tried three different versions of the same rom with the same result.

I realize this is an old post but wanted to ask a question.

This would not be a "Doujindance" PC Engine would it?

The way that guy modded consoles effected the stability of voltage to one of the cart pins, which basically made most flash devices not work with the consoles. Hu-Cards were not effected.
I have one of these and the only flash device which works with it is the very first revision of the Turbo Everdrive, which I can only guess uses less voltage or something. Later Turbo Everdrives won't work and even the older flash devices (Tototek, Neo PC, etc) won't work with it.

This isn't criticism as the Doujindance consoles were otherwise somewhat competently modified with region switches and RGB. However, there are people that really hate the way these things were modified because they are a pain to restore to original condition due to the materials the seller uses.

You can just make an image of any Audio CD with Image Burn and it will play just fine. It creates a cue file for the image.
They do take up quite a bit of space on the flash card though.

A few people have reported problems using the Japanese Mega Drives with the Mega EverDrive Pro.

Have you tested it with the Sega CD totally removed vs the Sega CD attached to it?

The SNES was not originally going to be CD-Based, that is was the Sony Playstation.

The Famicom was not originally CD-based, but had a floppy drive expansion device, which is an entirely different technology that CD-Roms.

The NES and SNES were both anemic in the processing department and developers used special chips to compensate for this.

Had nothing to do with CD-ROMS.

No one goes and takes someone else's concept and puts their own brand on it after being given permission to produce it. That is just not how things are done.

Yes, it is true that is what we should expect when the expansion port is grounded and it is also true that is what the RF shield is intended for.

However, sometimes there are unintended consequences to the presence or lack of presence of components in electronics.

When the Sega CD (non functioning with no power) is attached, the Pro works fine on my Genesis Model 2.

When the Sega CD is removed, the Pro has similar errors to what many people are reporting here.

That may be what the person here is talking about. Some mainboard revisions may need some type of adapter to trick the expansion port into thinking there is a Sega CD attached to it.

I've yet to find any diagram explaining what the specific pins on the Sega CD expansion port do, so I can't test this.

I feel little sympathy for someone who buys an unauthorized copy, then unwisely tries to upgrade it with authorized firmware.

It reminds me of someone trying to save time in the morning by putting their toaster in shower so they could eat breakfast while showering.

Sorry to double post, but this is a seperate thought.

I just learned that on one of my Sega Genesis consoles, the Mega Ever Drive Pro throws errors unless there is an inert Sega CD attached (no power brick).

Another user theorized this was due to an open bus or grounding issue with the Sega CD expansion port.

As the Japanese Megadrives did not have RF shielding, it is possible that the expansion port is not properly grounded (due to the lack of a metal plate underneath) causing errors due to the way the OS uses the Sega CD pin.

If that is the case, it may be possible to correct the issue if we knew which pin on the expansion conneector to ground.

(1) Test it in another Megadrive. This assumes the cart slot is clean.

(2) Test it with an inert Sega CD attached (no power supply to the Sega CD).

It seems that on some motherboard models the expansion port has open bus or grounding issues.

Connecting an inert Sega CD (even it it doesn't work at all) seemed to correct the issue with my model 2.

If I knew how to close the bus or what pins to ground, I'd know what to do to leave the Sega CD off.

I recently discovered that my Sega Genesis Model 2 has an issue with the expansion slot not being grounded, causing errors ONLY with the Ever Drive Pro. With an inert Sega CD console attached (receiving zero power), the problems go away.

So, it could be that for some specific motherboards we need to know which pins to ground on the expansion port so that the Mega Ever Drive Pro will work without an attachment.  Kind of like tricking it into thinking there is something attached when there isn't.

The problems I was seeing look exactly like what you are showing.

Here's a thought. If the RF shielding grounds the expansion bus, this could explain why some people with Japanese systems are having problems with games. The Japanese models didn't have the internal RF shielding.

So, how would I ground the expansion bus? Which pin (or pins) needs to be grounded?

Neither of my consoles have any corrosion internally. That has been checked out.

Before reading, take these facts into consideration. Both my Sega Genesis Model 1 and Model 2 work perfectly with the Everdrive MD rev 2.4 that I purchased several years ago. Both consoles are in great condition, with working power supplies (tested with a multi-meter). The cartridge connectors have perfect connectivity.

When I first received the Mega Everdrive Pro, I only tested it in my 1989 Sega Genesis Model 1. In that system it works fine.  All roms work. All Sega CD games work.

However, I recently tested the Pro in my Sega Genesis Model 2.  Unlike the EverDrive MD, the Pro DOES NOT work properly in this console. It throws address errors and returns many problems.  Yet, the older EverDrive MD works perfectly in the same console.

This is very puzzling because the Pro DOES work in my model 1 and with no problems. The Model 1 is actually in worse condition than the Model 2. Does anyone have any insights about this?

UPDATE:
Now this is weird. When I connect the Sega CD Model 2 (with no power brick) to the Sega Genesis Model 2, the EverDrive Pro then works perfectly with no problems and does not throw errors. If I disconnect the Sega CD, then it throws all kinds of errors (especially with larger Roms). 

What on Earth?

UPDATE 2:
Yep. Just tested again. With no Sega CD connected I get address errors in large games (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2, etc). With the unpowered Sega CD connected, the same games work just fine.  It seems the Sega CD is terminating some connection that needs to be closed for the Pro to work properly.

How would this FPGA design solve the issue of the eventual heat death of the universe? When all matter reaches a state of thermodynamic equilibrium there could be no energy.

I just played a dump of final fight with all of the .wav files exchanged for blank 356 kb .wav files on the Mega Everdrive Pro. Played well into the second level with no problems.

This was on an original (October 1989) Sega Genesis model 1 with an S-Video mod.  Non-TMSS. Cheap 8 GB memory card. Fat32.

The 1989 launch version of the Genesis was internally the same as the Megadrive in Japan (other than the excessive RF shielding to appease the US FCC).

However, I can't rule out the chance that the even older 1988 Japanese launch Megadrives have an issue the later models don't have that is causing this problem.

Have you tried cleaning the cart connector teeth with a pink eraser?
