New blog page: In-game hook compatibility
« on: June 07, 2016, 05:15 PM »
I've started a new page to list games that have issues with the in-game hooks: https://sd2snes.de/blog/compatibility/in-game-hook-compatibility
Columns will be added to the right with upcoming firmware releases.
So far the list is fairly short and I probably forgot to add some of them based on reports I got. Contributions are welcome. ;)

Does disabling hooks in-game (L+R+Start+Y) fix these issues? Or do you have to disable them from the sd2snes menu?

As long as the game runs at all it should always be possible to disable them in-game. Note that if you have hold-off enabled the button combinations will only work after 10 seconds into the game.

Final Fantasy II (USA) is missing text from dialog with in game hooks enabled. Turn off in game hooks and the problem is solved. Not every dialog bubble suffers from the glitch, but you can see some examples a few minutes into the game. Using 0.1.7b Sorry for poor quality photos but they get the point across.

Point taken ;)

In-game hooks, in terms of sd2snes lingo, are a means of periodically stealing a bit of the SNES processor's time while the game is running. The purpose of this is to carry out extra tasks, such as RAM patching for certain cheat codes, and querying the controller so you can use button combinations to reset the game, go back to the sd2snes menu, etc. without having to get off the couch =)

They work similar to the more advanced cheat cartridges of the time but are far less disruptive. Nevertheless some games have issues with them because they have very tight timing.
