Title: What causes savegames to disappear?
Post by: rustyshacklford on May 02, 2021, 04:31 AM
Hello all,
Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn't find any answers to this. I got this cart very recently and so far I've only used it to play Chrono Trigger. I turned on the game today to find that my savegame was gone. The srm was still there but the save was gone. Losing 5 hours of Chrono Trigger is frustrating but it could have been worse.
Does anyone know what causes savegames to disappear? I want to avoid this happening again so I don't lose my save file right before beating a game like FFVI. I only had a save file in Chrono Trigger, so I have no idea if whatever happened would have caused savegames from other games to be deleted too.

If it matters, I'm using a sandisk extreme 32 gb micro sd card (smallest one the store had), and I formatted it to fat32 using the windows command prompt/diskpart.

You didn't say if it was the normal ROM, but I know this is true with MSU1 games where you have to long reset back to the main menu before the save can be written to the SD card, because the card is constantly in use during play. Either from streaming FMV or PCM files from the card.

A long reset is holding reset for a couple of seconds. I usually do it just to be safe even with non-MSU1 games.

The FXPAK copies the save file to the SD card automatically (see the FAQ: https://sd2snes.de/blog/faq), so you need to wait 2-3 seconds after saving in the game for it to have the time to do that. I don't think the battery is even used for the SRAM, although it's designed to be able to. It's currently only for the RTC. If it's an MSU-1 game you must reset to the firmware menu before turning off, by holding reset a couple of seconds, or it won't be able to write the save to the SD card.

You should make regular backups of all your save files to your computer and possibly other devices, so you don't loose too much play time when disaster does happen, which it always does sooner or later. Don't overwrite your previous backups with the new ones in case the new ones are corrupt.

It was a normal unpatched ROM. Now that you've mentioned it I think I saved then immediately turned off my console within a second or two. So this may have caused the savegame to corrupt? I'll make sure to wait longer next time.

At the time I was using the 1.10.2 firmware for some reason (no clue why I was using that version). I updated to 1.10.3 after losing the save.
